First time watch of MR. MAJESTYK and so far this movie rules, but it rules extra hard because it starts out with Charles Bronson defending the basic human rights of migrant workers and kicking some white redneck ass. It's the anti-DEATH WISH!

This is why I dread the outcome of Joe Dante's auction of his original CITIZEN KANE sled, some AI bro buying it just so he can set it on fire for lulz.

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles

If you feel like watching a Swiss watch-tight thriller about a bunch of Nazis losing, may I recommend THE TRAIN.

Rewatched THE UNTOUCHABLES last night and those David Mamet-penned Capone speeches are true works of art, like some kind of South Side iambic pentameter.

I wonder where this guy stands on Jan 6th

Worth it just to read King praising Kubrick's The Shining in 1982, before he eventually grew estranged from it.

I finally listened to Tony Gilroy on that Ross Douthat podcast, and nearly did a spit-take when Douthat casually mentioned that he "grew up in the Nineties." Christ, I thought he was in his late 50s! Conservatism, man -- it's worse than a crack pipe.

If I were the president, I would be somewhat concerned that ICE officers in Omaha fucking Nebraska were pelted with rocks and garbage

the fact that people were told “today you are going to an elementary school to lie to teachers and kidnap kids” and didn’t immediately tell their bosses to go fuck themselves is all you need to know about why ICE should be dismantled

I’ve seen a lot of “the left is blowing this race by uniting behind a socialist like Zohran” takes but not enough “the establishment/center is blowing this race by uniting behind a sexual harasser/corrupt weirdo like Cuomo” takes

This movie contains an amazing sequence of death by turtle.

What a photo. Paramount, California, U.S., June 7, 2025 @reuters.com

for context here’s a map of greater Los Angeles and the protest is the roughly the red circle

Watched this several times before I realized you can see the shooter

This guy would not only make an incredible mayor, politically, and just as a figurehead, he would also be a boon to the local economy. The way he sells New York reminds me of narration from a 1940s news reel about the miracles of modern life.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

Those white South African refugees are going right back lol.

NO LIE: When I saw the Beastie Boys at the garden they had a DOG CIRCUS open for them. Everyone thought it was a joke till curtain parted and little hoops and slides and dogs! Packed MSG crowd cheering for these dogs like they were the biggest stars ever. It was amazing.

One of the craziest facts about Chuck Barris' Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is that there are pull quotes on the back of the hardcover from Gena Rowlands, John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Ben Gazzara.

25 years, huh. Now excuse me while I go walk into the sea.

For me, the whole point of podcasts is that I can listen to them while I cook, walk the dog, wash dishes, whatever. I don't want to sit there for an hour and watch them do it!

Rewatched Rogue One this past weekend, and I can't overstate how much two seasons worth of Andor has elevated this movie for me, like someone performed an OK magic trick at a kids' party and then told you the heartbreaking story of how they learned it.

This movie is excellent: A desperate British crime noir with social overtones, Bicycle Thieves played as a blackmail thriller. Peter Sellers is terrifying and John Guillermin tightens the screws all the way to the end. One of the best pandemic-era discoveries for me when it played on Criterion.
