Exactly. What are those Republican congressmen and senators talking about behind closed doors? What are they telling their children? How do they see their future? How can they not wake up in the morning and find themselves transformed into a giant beetle?

Our perspective paper on resilience and tipping points is now out! We outline key principles to guide future research on these critical topics, from dynamical systems to real-world applications. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... #Resilience #TippingPoints #Ecology

What are the implications of considering #TippingPoints in #restoration strategies? Thanks to the organizers of the #RamonMargalefColloquia & @ricardsole.bsky.social for the opportunity to give this lecture! Some topics were: #ClimateChange #WarningSignals #DynamicalGhosts #Antrhopocene

I'm launching a new monthly maths column, and what better day to do it than Pi Day? Read on to learn what an ancient Egyptian scribe called "Directions for Knowing All Dark Things", why Newton was ashamed by pi, and how our best estimate was wrong for a century www.newscientist.com/article/2471...

🚨 Excited for the latest paper from the lab, led by Zhang & Arsham. Can we coarse-grain a #ComplexNetwork while preserving macroscopic network flows? Surprisingly, the answer is positive, and we have shown it by means of StatPhys + Machine Learning. 🧵 1/ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

How do we test the (Gaia) theory of planetary self-regulation (Lovelock-Margulis)? We just started our experimental implementation on bioreactors using #synbio to bring planetary scale to the Lab.Exciting day! @vmaull.bsky.social @ftmaestre.bsky.social @vdlorenzo.bsky.social @jordiplam.bsky.social

The highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 is an emerging and unexpected threat to many wild animal species. A Comment article in Nature Reviews Biodiversity argues that international collaboration and information-sharing is essential to enable worldwide actions. 🧪

National Geographic is hiring a Cartography intern this summer! This is a fantastic opportunity to get real-world experience creating maps for print and digital with our team here at NatGeo! Please share with your geography and cartography students! jobs.disneycareers.com/job/washingt...

New Paper Alert. Justus van Ramshorst et al. compared lower-cost eddy covariance (LC-EC) with conventional EC (CON-EC). "Our results showed that LC-EC has the potential to measure CO2 and H2O fluxes at approximately 25% of the cost of a CON-EC system". Find out more at: doi.org/10.5194/amt-...

Countries should be investing more money in science, not less. It’s pretty clear that many young minds will not be interested in becoming scientists if the salaries are not good and the future of this occupation is not certain.

What is complexity? What kind of approach is needed to define it? Here's a 1977 paper by Robert Rosen, one of the pioneers of System Science, discussing how information, error and scale are central to this problem: tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1... @manlius.bsky.social @svalver.bsky.social

To me that means that matter is not enough, that we need processes to include in a minimal definition. The pics shared by @ricard_sole provide a nice example for the difference between a Thermodynamic system far from equilibrium (left) and at equilibrium (right). #ComplexSystems 🧪🦠

Want to do a PhD in climate, with a focus on using machine learning to recover millions of lost weather observations and so better reconstruct climatic changes over the past century? Open to students from UK and Ireland, funded through @climatecocentre.bsky.social. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it. - Dick Feynman

Simple but very easy on the eyes! Lovely elevation map of South America by @hellovizart

The very first pages of my upcoming book start with why and how the mathematical version of the Occam's razor, ie the minimum description length, should be used to guide the modeling and analysis of #ComplexSystems... 🤔 Complex Systems have (and need) generative mechanisms.

🚨 We're hiring! 🚨 We’re looking for two research assistants to join our team! If you're interested in contributing to research on making Swedish and global food systems more sustainable, resilient, and healthy, make sure to apply by 16 February! 🌱🍽️ Learn more: https://buff.ly/2Lu3mgn

Watch the waves from yesterday’s M7.6 earthquake in the Caribbean Sea roll across seismic stations in North America.

This isn’t efficiency. It’s irreversibly turning back the clock on human progress at understanding our world. I am dizzy with rage.

No global warming if you ignore the rest of the globe?

We've reached 1.5°C global warming. With current policies, we're heading for a catastrophic 2.7°C warming. A new review paper in Science shows: this would change the Arctic 'beyond recognition', with knock-on effects (like rising seas) around the world. 🌊 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

There is evidence that technologies like search engines and GPS maps can alter our ability to learn and remember. Nature reports how scientists are now working out what AI might do to our memories. 🧪

I know people are worried (and rightly so!), but many NOAA NCEI sources were scheduled to be offline potentially through Friday evening

The public has a distorted view of science, because children are taught in school that science is a collection of firmly established truths. In fact, science is not a collection of truths. It is a continuing exploration of mysteries. - Freeman Dyson

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
