sper.org/annual-meeti... Meeting registration is now open!

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

ATTENTION: If you have received a NoA from NIH within the last 10 days, please let me know the grant number and award date. I am trying to characterize the time lag between awards and NIH Reporter. DM me if you wish or just reply

Also just now, NIH intranet was updated re its communications pause. NIH scientists can now resume travel to and participation in conferences. The pause on updating the Federal Register remains in place -- which means grant-making is effectively frozen, in violation of court orders.

Written by a MD-PhD student who had worked with rhe incoming NIH director stanforddaily.com/2025/01/29/s...

I have heard from several sources (although details are vague) it appears that NIH is back to blocking NoA release while awaiting development of plans for dealing language, perhaps pertaining to DEI issues, in these awards. If this is occurring, it seems like a clear violation of the TRO. 1/n

This is a chilling reminder that even if the courts fight off most of the Doge attacks on NIH, MAGA patsy Congress Critters can still block grant awards. Of course, blocking federal $ awards to their own constituencies might not seem smart to most of them.

For 38 years, PRAMS has collected critical data on maternal-child health with the goal to reduce infant morbidity and mortality. CDC has officially halted the 2024 PRAMS data collection for the participating 46 states and the future is uncertain.

Most people probably aren’t tracking this but Senate Republicans just started an all-night voting marathon that will allow them to gut Medicaid and increase child hunger while giving handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

In response to Trump science policies, universities are accepting fewer graduate students than normal and freezing positions, STAT has learned.

This is the NIOSH World Trade Center Health Program, which supports 9/11 responders and survivors.

Ok this is making the rounds and tbc the scale of what is happening to the federal workforce and with impoundment is unprecedented - but I think we need to be really careful about assuming this is going to all hit at once in March or that we know the size of the impact 1/

The Dear Colleague Letter is gonna work ... campuses will end programs, fire people, even dig into the curriculum over the next couple of weeks and beyond. They don't have to. But they will.

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Wow, listen to this guy. He served as chief economist of the U.S. Department of Labor, former senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers and serves as board member @upjohninstitute.bsky.social & the Society of Labor Economists, & is generally a great labor economist. ⬇️

NEW: The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning. They include people who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month. @kimzetter.bsky.social reports for @wired.com www.wired.com/story/nation...

I hope state DA’s are as quick to file a lawsuit over this racist policy using our education system to assert bigotry and #racism as they were about the feds freezing funds. This is a fight for #equity, #equality, #freedom, and #education @jeffjacksonnc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

Late Breaker abstracts are now being accepted for inclusion in SER’s annual meeting, June 10-13, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. Submit your abstract here: https://buff.ly/3CGytQJ

Be like Carrie! Contact me on Signal (usha.22) and end up being the lead of a story even if you aren't sure the info you have is helpful. We are journalists and not inside federal agencies. We don't have magic knowledge. We need you to help us expose what is happening. We'll protect your identity.

1. OSHA has ordered the digital and physical destruction of 18 publications on workplace safety practices, according to an email obtained by Popular Information. The email says the publications have been removed from the web and tells staff that physical copies should be "disposed of or recycled"

The logical extension of this is that HBCUs are illegal. Understand that they are going to try to unilaterally shut down Black colleges in the next couple weeks.

This is happening as we speak..

As I and others have predicted, the Trump administration is defining all attention to race and racism as a form of illegal discrimination that jeopardizes access to Federal dollars.

Hearing from colleagues that the NIH SEDH study section is currently outright not discussing anything disparities related. #EpiSky #MedSky @altnih4science.bsky.social

Melissa and I wrote about our research being purged... www.minnpost.com/community-vo...

Penn has always wanted to be the nation's leading university and it finally is -- in chickenshit cowardice I guess when your most famous alums are Donald Trump and Elon Musk you have a legacy to live down to www.inquirer.com/education/un...

ATTENTION (PARTICULARLY NIHers) If anyone has information about the numbers and types of folks in your institute, center, office, or whatever who were were terminated, please share them with me by DM or on Signal (jeremymberg.78). I am putting together an inventory.

Someone awesome in my circle shared some terrific news with me today but was hesitant to do so because of all that is going on in the science world. It may appear insensitive that you are celebrating when other colleagues are struggling but I entreat you to celebrate & share good news. 1/

DOGE has your financial data and they don't care one bit about keeping it secure. One thing you can do to protect your financial health is freezing your credit at the three bureaus. www.usa.gov/credit-freeze

It truly breaks my heart that after we went through COVID, the burnt out OG public health workforce *and* new grads/early career folks who went into it all bc they saw how vital it was during a pandemic, are now being fired, losing their funding, & ultimately shown how little our field is valued

Do you understand how badly you have to fuck up to make Quebec sing the anthem with this much pride

Basically we are looking at a pandemic/Great Recession sized disaster heading toward higher ed in the US, for no other reason than the fact that the Republican Party is in a culture war with academics.

As an EIS officer assigned to workplace safety in 2012-2014, my job was to make sure workers came home to their families safe and healthy every day. Poultry processors in SC. Factory workers in ND. Lifeguards in OH. Teachers in MI. We listened to their stories and worked to make their jobs safer.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

The termination of 850 Indian Health Service physicians, nurses, and dentists will have a grave impact on access to care for millions of Native Americans. Upholding our treaty obligations is not optional.

If you are one of the #CDC #HHS #FDA #NIH employees who have learned today that your employment is being abruptly ended, we want to hear from you. @altcdc.bsky.social www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/f...

NEW: approximately 330 National Cancer Institute probationary employees will be fired this afternoon. That’s a bit less than 10% of its entire staff.

Today Trump, Musk, and RJK Jr laid off 10% of the CDC workforce, including half of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, which responds to disease outbreaks in the U.S. and worldwide. This is absolutely devastating for public health. www.npr.org/sections/sho...
