So everyone's clear: this is a bald-faced lie. The "required notice" was in fact, a TERMINATION notice required by the WARN Act (one of the few laws compliance is being attempted for) which mandates notice for mass layoffs. NIOSH workers have been placed on admin leave- no work will be conducted.

As an update to the update: The asterisk'd, partially RIF'd divisions, the World Trade Center Health Program and the Division of Compensation Analysis and Support (which was formed to assist those occupationally exposed to radiation) had 24% and 78% of employees cut, respectively.

The entirety of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was wiped out last night in a form letter sent by RFK Jr. NIOSH is an agency in the CDC that investigates workplace hazards and finds solutions. It protects workers, so it’s gone. Even firefighters.

Once again begging media reports to get the math right. For example, cutting a $5M five-year grant in year 4 isn't saving $1M, but it is wasting the $4M already spent. Stop letting this administration get away with so many lies.

Just gonna leave this here again, now that all but the merest handful of our OpDiv has received official termination notices- including all of these programs...

Breaking- almost all staff at NIOSH- the worker safety research agency-laid off tonight and given termination dates for July. All safety research and prevention projects stopped. No doubt more workers will die and more will be injured- all preventable. Insanity. www.cbsnews.com/news/worker-...

This is RFK Jr, Trump, and Elon Musk giving a giant middle finger to the working people of America. Right back at you, boys🖕🖕

😭😭😭

NIOSH also: - certifies N95 respirators so you know they work - tracks injuries and illnesses in the U.S. workforce - gives free safety consultations to small businesses - solves medical mysteries, like why military pilots have an unusually high cancer rate Tell RFK Jr to bring back NIOSH!

NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH) Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

If you wear N95 respirators (masks), stock up now because RFK Jr eliminated NIOSH, the federal agency that tests them and certifies that they actually work.

New poll: *27% of Americans think Chinese Americans are a threat to U.S. society. *40% of Americans think Asian Americans are more loyal to their countries of ancestral origin than to the United States. www.axios.com/2025/05/01/a...

The goal is to kill scientific funding, stop every approved dollar from going on the door, and then claim it is savings, and hope the House GOP will cut the budget to enable a regressive tax cut.

every gender transition is a statement in favor of human possibility and freedom and i’m tired of hearing it talked about like it’s some kind of disease

DOGE is gutting the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the agency that conducts job safety research – but pressure on Congress has already helped reinstate some jobs. Call Congress and demand they save NIOSH!

🌺 Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month from all of us at AAF! 🪷 May this month be one of joy, resilience, and connection for our AAPI communities here in New York and all across the country.

The most frustrating part about the anti trans HHS gender affirming care report is just how much of a joke it is scientifically and medically but will be given the veneer of legitimacy by the media. Medical orgs have already strongly refuted this report as biased and lacking any merit.

Although some #NIOSH staff have been temporarily recalled, the agency's life-saving programs have been eliminated and recalled staff is scheduled to be permanently terminated next month. The result: More American workers will get sick and die needless deaths. jordanbarab.com/confinedspac...

We all thought finding new ways to protect U.S. workers was something everyone could agree was a good thing. But, since some folks think it’s not, we created this account to tell you about NIOSH- the small but mighty agency that’s been making workplaces safer and healthier for over 50 years.

385 workers die each day from hazardous working conditions. Without a fully functioning National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, that number will increase. We urge members of Congress to push President Trump to reverse his gutting of NIOSH. aflcio.org/press/releas...

Almost like a Consumer Reports for health. You could go on their website and see recommendations for things like what vaccines are good for babies this year. We could call it, I don't know, the CDC maybe.

The administration has already nerfed picks like Gaetz because they were embarrassed. RFK just said that the MMR vaccine contains aborted fetus debris. Absolutely psychotic. American public health, as an institution, should organize around one clear goal right now: this guy needs to be fired.

DOGE had no idea what the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health does- yet they eliminated it. 92% of workers have termination notices for June. This is not about efficiency, it’s a war on workers and their health and safety. Let’s be clear. Insanity is right. youtu.be/3d4zIsrbcr4

Many thanks to @ldattaro.bsky.social for speaking to some of us junior faculty about how we're navigating our path to tenure in this time of turmoil. She wrote a really nice piece; give it a read!

NEW: An NIH policy coming in the next week will target — and at least temporarily stop — funding outside the US, threatening thousands of projects and collaborations on topics like infectious diseases and cancer. Some NIH staff have already been told to hold all subaward funds for foreign labs.

They are canceling obviously useful, common sense programs because they are ideologically committed to the idea that government is and must be useless

I know two parents of newborns who can't do their own research because they were CDC researchers fired by RFK Jr during the final weeks of their pregnancies.

A postdoctoral position is available at University of California San Diego to study the genome-wide contribution of tandem repeat and structural variants to tobacco use disorder and related traits. Duke University is planning to cut 10% of expenses—$350 million—which will entail hundreds of voluntary buyouts likely followed by involuntary staffing cuts. The university blames loss of federal funding, particularly grants. www.dukechronicle.com/article/2025...

Update: After Friday's purge, per multiple internal sources, the number of awards terminated from NSF is 1040.

📣 NIH reinstating some terminated grants Exclusive via @chronicle.com 🔗👇 confirms what we’ve seen for weeks Piece asks: what’s “secret sauce”? As an early-impacted PI, I know strategy matters Now I'm advising orgs on appeals, “orderly” closeout & reinstatements: brittanycharlton.com/consulting

NEW: We (mostly @noamross.net) launched a website to shine a brighter light on terminated NIH and NSF grants. grant-watch.us It links to our NIH & NSF trackers, grant info submission forms, and other info. We'll also add new analyses soon. Check it out and let us know what else you'd like to see.

Anyone submitted an appeal of termination of a diversity supplement? I’d love to see an example. [email protected] if you’re up for sharing
