I do love me a cocktail šø

This is what motivates me to this day, by doing rigorous mathematics you can extend your intuition for what is possible in physics and at the same time be very precise.

What I especially loved was the fact that, using relatively simple math, one can make this theory which many would describe as abstract or counterintuitive very concrete.

As long as I can remember I loved watching science documentaries or read (childrenās) books on science. When I was ~14 I read a book on special relativity explained using simple geometry (Very Special Relativity by Sander Bais) which really got me interested in theoretical physics.

As long as he stays of from Bluesky the problem canāt be that serious

Of course incompleteness theorems are very closely related to non-computability etc
comment in response to

So I am reminded of incompleteness theorems: no matter how many things you assume, one can always construct statements that you cannot prove. I wonder if something similar holds here: no matter how many functions one introduces, one can always construct equations without closed form solutions š¤

On the other hand, perhaps it is a good thing that the universe is not just described by some closed form expressions cause that would be rather boring.

I usually happily avoid statistics in my work, but of course optimisation (in terms of extremising action functionals) plays an important role in theoretical physics. Here the extrema are given as solutions to PDEās, which in many (even linear) cases also lack closed form solutions.

I happen to be in London on Monday, so Iāll be dropping by ^^

Will there be some organised socialising (networking sounds a bit too serious) before or after the talks?
comment in response to

Well yeah I admit my work is a bit far away from real world applications, mathematical foundations of quantum field theory etc., but technically Iām in an applied maths cluster so what is and isnāt applied is just a matter of perspective I suppose

Thanks, when I looked on there a while ago it seemed like it was mostly the typical social media āmathā puzzles, but that may have just been bad timing. Iāll keep an eye on it!

I sort of need it myself unfortunately š

comment in response to

comment in response to

comment in response to
