The idea that this is an efficiency, or that they are just gutting woke programs is horseshit. It's a massive disinvestment in science.

The Spark Society appreciates your support. Thank you all for your donations. In addition to donations, I encourage those who study animal or human cognition to become a member of the Spark Society. If you support diverse voices and building inclusive spaces in Cognitive Psy/Sci, you belong!

Quick trip to @uofcalifornia.bsky.social for a coffee and a chat with @damcotto.bsky.social 😊 ☕️ ☀️

Dear WM ECRs across the globe, please consider joining the BEST ONLINE conference ever!

Bluetorial: The Kent State killings This is the 55th anniversary of the killings of four students at Kent State in 1970s. This event hit me hard when I was 12. In a tumultuous time, this stood out to me as next-level insanity. The possibility of a sequel these days scares me deeply.

Six months ago, I accepted a postdoc offer in a fabulous lab. Three days ago, the Trump administration terminated the NSF grant supporting the position. Today, my offer had to be rescinded, and my PhD defense is a week away. (1/3)

I have two things to say about the judge being arrested by the FBI. 1. Obstructing immigration is illegal but also morally correct. 2. I don’t believe a word the FBI or ICE says. They are lying. The judge is innocent.

This is terrifying.

The week has been chaotic, but there's been A LOT of good news this week, especially in politics. A thread/

The latest ballot count has Lee with 53% of the vote. Charlene Wang is poised to handily win the City Council District 2 seat.

🧪 DOGE is reporting cancelling 402 NSF grants today. And let's recap: this is for awards that NSF has **ALREADY** judged as aligned with its mission in law, which includes broadening participation in STEM. It bears repeating: the law supersedes exec orders. For more: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

Very good explainer 🧵

I was so glad he brought attention to this issue and spoke on specifics, such as how strong of an investment research is & how the funding freeze is hurting PhD students and postdoc, especially. Shoutout Senator Catherine Cortez Masto for asking the question too.

People believe in progress to racial equality in educational attainment that is inconsistent with evidence, correcting these misperceptions leads to support for equity-enhancing education policy (by Browman & Miele, 2025): link.springer.com/article/10.1...

"Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for." – Seamus Heaney

Was just teaching a paper that showed that more generous state Medicaid programs reduce poverty and increase savings. This is especially important given the growing share of the population that provides caregiving for older adults & may rely on long-term care- for which Medicaid is a major payor,

New paper with @jmedrano.bsky.social. It’s the first experiment in a line of research testing working memory (our ability to hold and manipulate information for later use) theories in the context of math problem solving and learning. bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

“Last used during World War II, the law served as the legal rationale behind the forced relocation and internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans, as well as people of German and Italian descent.”

😩

This makes me so sad... I've been using one of these datasets for the past 5 years. They're so important for education research.

Troops on campus? We have experience with that. It's bad. Very, very, very bad. Some of us are very aware. To those that are not, here you go: www.kent.edu/may-4-1970

🟣 This is the eighth interview in the BOLD series on our special collection. Catrin Finkenauer explains why schools and educators need to earn students’ trust—especially in those from financially insecure backgrounds—to prevent school dropout. boldscience.org/why-schools-...

Friendly reminder that Ramadan starts tonight and our Muslim students may need a little more support and grace as they observe their fast. Especially if you have afternoon or evening classes, please try to be aware and (ideally) flexible. Ramadan Mubarak!

I really like this thread, talking through process, and each place we can stop them. Republicans tried to cut Medicaid in (at least) 1981, 1995, 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2017. Now 2025. This record of our success and their failure doesn't mean we'll stop them. But we can. We have before.

Excited to share that my book is now available for pre-order at Oxford Uni Press: bit.ly/subtlewebs If you are interested in organizations, nonprofits, education improvement, or technology development, please consider ordering for yourself or your library.

Folks, if you want to help protect science funding in this country, today is a really good day to call your US House Representative. A budget bill, likely filled with massive cuts, is going to the floor for a vote as soon as today.

Hello hi 👋🏾 Special Issue Deadline Friday!

I wrote a piece for @sciam.bsky.social about why White parents should be talking to their kids about race and racism. It was so great to work with @megha.bsky.social on this piece! Please share! www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

We have to keep fighting back, and people are. So take a moment to let this thread hearten you. ❤️👊

Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/
