“Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait. But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty.” "They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933–45" by Milton Sanford Mayer Unite✊

Pretty fundamental demonstration of how the wealthiest nation that has ever existed has failed a basic test of ‘goodness.’ So many billionaires and yet…no space for public broadcasting that united, educated, informed, and brought joy to so many. Have you no decency, America?

I keep thinking about this. Day in and day out.

www.newsweek.com/republicans-... The US is a totalitarian state. The party in power is ready to deport citizens without a hearing. They have fully abandoned the Constitution. What those who disagree do, how the fight plays out, and whether repair is possible, are the only remaining questions.

www.forbes.com/sites/stuart... “Republicans vote against Ensuring ICE does not deport US citizens.” The USA is now a totalitarian state. Your life, your liberty, your pursuit of happiness is now dependent. You have no rights, the rights you thought you had were a myth.

www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/h... Ideally these therapies require a monthly subscription for life. Is this the problem with vaccines? Eradication of an illness that mostly kills children doesn’t allow the pharmaceutical industry to make enough money off of us? Got it.

Here’s some nice art. Artist: Ana Aragão. Community lifts us up. I’ve been thinking about this piece for years, since I saw a print in a children’s book store.

Here’s some nice street art.

Giant otters really don’t care.

www.npr.org/2025/05/01/n... I have so many questions. First of all, *is she an immigrant?* Visiting the USA is legal. If you aren’t from one of the 43 countries for which there is a visa waiver, then you may need a visa. Did she have one at one point? Did it expire? Why nearly 3 months detained?

I just want to list a few things that used to be nonpartisan, and that it was considered good for government to help with: Parks. Public schooling. Helping the poor. Making sure kids are fed. Strong global alliances. Democracy. Human rights. Consumer protections. The list goes on! Add yours:

Sen. Ossoff: Who out there in the American public is sitting at home demanding that we shut down cancer research and Alzheimer's research?

slate.com/news-and-pol... Q “Does this mean that Canada is again a socialist, leftist heaven waiting for me to apply for asylum?” A “No, stupid: It means that the bar is in hell and we are all in the hell with the bar, hopping over it leisurely.” Please enjoy this hilariously excellent read.

I was “talking about talking politics” with a friend. She prefers *not* talk about it because she feels “spun up.” And it’s interesting how we’re different: *the world* spins me up; talking about it helps me feel calm. I wonder if this is an important aspect to engaging the American electorate.

www.salon.com/2025/04/28/s... He’s just going to ignore the Posse Comitatus act? “Whoever, except in cases expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, uses the military to execute laws shall be fined or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”18 U.S.C. § 1385 Rot in jail.

Welp at least *some* countries are able to recognize ‘stupid fascism’ and act accordingly. Not picking fights with the whole world whilst shitting on allies will probably work out well for Canada. Congratulations 🇨🇦 !!!

When scholars look over the ruins of the USA, perhaps they’ll say: “These things are not real. They are phantasmagoria. They were made by dreams, and now that no one is dreaming them any longer they are crumbling away.” Quote from “Oryx and Crake,” by #MargaretAtwood Such a treasure!
