New @amprogg.bsky.social: On Tuesday, SCOTUS will hear a case brought by Mexico that will either hold U.S. gun manufacturers accountable for fueling gun violence in Mexico or empower an unchecked firearm industry to break the law without consequence 🧵 www.americanprogress.org/article/mexi...

Handing control of the ATF to a Second Amendment extremist isn't just reckless—it's a calculated move to cripple enforcement and protect the gun industry at all costs.

I am an optimist, though I've found it harder in recent weeks. I also know people don't want to hear about the long arc bent towards justice when suffering is happening now. Yet I disagree here that optimism makes us complacent - despair can also paralyze us. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

Brain drain is a real threat - brilliant people will leave the US if things don't turn around. But we'll also lose out on incredible international scholars looking to build their careers here. That's bad for science as both a knowledge enterprise and an institution for collaboration.

Trayvon Martin’s death wasn’t just a tragedy—it was a call to action. The law that protected his killer is still on the books. Stand Your Ground laws threaten lives every day. Real justice means dismantling these racist policies.

The US is run by rewards-obsessed teenage boys with undeveloped brains and no regard for others. They demand respect without deserving it. They egg each other on like children pulling the wings from an insect. When will the adults step in? www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Gun violence continues to fall in New York state. The 20 original Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) agencies (not NYC) reported another drop in shootings in January 2025 and the lowest level of gun violence over the last 12 months ever recorded (began in 2006).

jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/245... My team is hiring a full-time project manager (ignore the internal job title) for our Project Safe Guard implementation project. I’ll explain the job in more detail in replies, but this would be a great opportunity for someone considering pursuing a PhD

Dan Bongino is a liar, a fraud, and a joke. He's the last thing the FBI needs and yet there's no process to stop him. So many terrible leadership choices across the board but this one really shows what a circus we're living in right now. www.npr.org/2025/02/24/n...

Interested in the association between gun dealers and the distribution of gun violence in cities? Check out this article published today with my colleagues Jie Xu, Sandy Xie, Richard Stansfield, and @daniel-semenza.bsky.social link.springer.com/article/10.1...

As researchers, the way forward isn't a binary between compliance and defiance. A third path is open to us all: quiet resistance. Protect data. Keep writing. Train the next generation. Stand up for junior scholars. Find power where you can. And always take the long view. We owe them nothing.

Well we've reached our, "Mitch McConnell is the voice of reason" era and I am not a fan.

Anyone have experience linking Medicaid/prescription data to arrest records? Interested in options at the individual and county levels. Would love to learn more from someone who's done it - there seems to be a lot of potential for really important work if feasible. Thanks for any help!

Attention to any one thing is impossible and for Trump/Musk, that's the point. I want to highlight an executive order from last week calling for a full legal review of efforts to reduce gun violence in America. Frightening after so much progress in recent years. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

The NIH cuts represent a full-fledged attack on American universities and our entire scientific system - please read this explainer thread to learn why.

Menendez sentenced to 11 years - good. All elected officials regardless of party should be held accountable for abuses of power. New Jersey deserves better. gothamist.com/news/former-...

www.nj.com/opinion/2025... The @njgvrc.bsky.social has received tremendous support from New Jersey. For our mission to be safe as the federal government freezes funds + a gubernatorial race approaches, this next investment must fortify us against being the next gun violence effort shut down.

Received at 9:07pm tonight from the National Science Foundation for all PIs: "All NSF grantees must comply with these Executive Orders, and any other relevant Executive Orders issued, by ceasing all non-compliant grant and award activities." No clue if the halt applies here - complete confusion.

NIJ and other federal agencies have paused research funding, but @arnoldventures.bsky.social has not! Check out our open RFPs. We're looking for causal studies across a range of issues, including crime/criminal justice. www.arnoldventures.org/grantees

Just got this email from the NIJ, cancelling ALL posted notices of funding. This is THE main agency for criminology/criminal justice research in the country. Funding for research on gun violence, violence against women, improving forensic science, and hate crimes ALL removed from the site.

Here is my TedX Talk on Gangs, Smart Phones & Digital Harms including insights from UK & US research...also digital bans don't work youtu.be/PDxoE2XFjag?...

Seriously @npr.org??? The unwillingness to call Musk's anti-Semitic gesture what it obviously was - a Nazi salute - is pathetic and cowardly. There is no debate and news organizations should stop gaslighting us into thinking otherwise. Shameful "journalism" here. www.npr.org/2025/01/23/n...

Lots of bad news right now, but here's one bright spot. In 2024, Camden, NJ saw a 40 year low in homicides. In 2012, the city was dubbed the "Murder Capital of the World." Remarkable case of the police and the community working together to create lasting change. www.tapinto.net/towns/camden...

Here's another success story about the Group Violence Reduction Strategy, also known as Group Violence Intervention or focused deterrence. Cities shouldn't depend on just one strategy to reduce violence, but this one has the strongest track record of them all. apnews.com/article/balt...

BREAKING: We’re only two days into the Trump-Vance Administration, and they have seemingly disbanded the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention already—making it clear this Administration works for the gun lobby, not the American people.

So so stoked to have Allie joining us at the GVRC! I'm proud of the work we're doing at the center and Allie is going to help us do much bigger and better things in 2025 and beyond.

New resource! The new Mapping Injury, Overdose, and Violence Dashboard from the CDC allows users to look at rates and counts of deaths from firearms (suicide vs homicide) and non-suicide drug overdose From 9/23 to 8/24, 44,830 firearm deaths: *61%* from suicide www.cdc.gov/injury-viole...

New study out now in SS&M from our team @njgvrc.bsky.social! Both frequency + recency of gun violence exposure influence mental health and suicide. More national evidence of the extensive toll that gun violence takes on our collective health and well-being. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New Jersey achieved historic lows in gun violence for the 2nd year in a row: 📉 Shooting victims down 16% in 2024. 📉 Fatalities down 20%. Thanks to strong laws, accountability for gun traffickers, and thriving community programs, NJ is leading the way.

Gun violence research is under threat by the new federal administration. Thank you to @bradyunited.org, @krisbrown.bradyunited.org, Karen Kanter, and Carol Stiller for this call to support the @njgvrc.bsky.social in the face of uncertainty. nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A...

This is a nuanced piece from Afea Tucker at @thetrace.org re: the shooting of 25 people in Philly 12 days before Christmas. Lots of good news about gun violence, but the national and annual trends should not blind us to the tragedies that happen every day. We are still far from celebrating.

New open access article out today in Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities w/ a fantastic team. In a nationally representative sample of Black Americans, we find that just anticipating police + community violence is harmful to various aspects of health. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Ooooh my new favorite salutation used by a predatory fake conference hit my spam inbox today: "Dear Dr. Doctor." Double credentials, double fancy!

If you're a gun violence researcher looking for new projects in 2025, the Rand Gun Policy Research Review remains a perfect roadmap. Any blank or inconclusive cells in the tables means we need more research to understand the effects (if any) of these policies! www.rand.org/research/gun...

Brand new article out now, led by @ianasilver.bsky.social. Using NLSY-97 data, we found that children incarcerated in adult facilities suffer long-term economic consequences related to employment and wages earned. These are particularly harmful to Black children. academic.oup.com/bjc/advance-...

Happy new year! My three year old son looked at me while eating his pretzels and raisins today and said, "You have a beautiful face, Daddy." It's all downhill from here in 2025.

Fatal shootings were down 12 percent in 2024 and non-fatal shootings were down 13 percent per data from the Gun Violence Archive.

Good news. Violence is still too high in many of NJ's urban core cities, but certainly welcomed reductions in homicide and increases in arrest rates. www.nj.com/mercer/2024/...

Joined the Back to School Shootings podcast to talk about the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian and the false promises of school security. We should be deeply skeptical of those claiming they can protect our children with no evidence and at great cost. k12ssdb.substack.com/p/ep-25-woul...
