I will keep the letter open until 3rd March, the date of the meeting called by the Royal Society to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows. So one more week to add your voice to the call for the RS to stand up for its values.

Chilling read… Solidarity to all the colleagues at Cardiff University. “Some colleagues were told that offering to teach in Kazakhstan might save their jobs. Apparently the university will decimate itself in Cardiff and rebuild itself in Astana”.

Royal Society must choose between Musk and its integrity. When science itself is under attack, neutrality becomes complicity, says Kit Yates. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-v...

"ROCKET.. refines [Alphafold2] predictions using cryo-EM, cryo-ET, and X-ray crystallography data... this approach captures biologically important structural variation that AlphaFold2 does not... ROCKET automates difficult modeling tasks, such as flips of functional loops and domain rearrangements"

Legitmately thrilled to share our latest work, in which @fernpizza.bsky.social solved an experimental challenge in plasmid biology as old as the field: measuring how plasmids compete and evolve within individual cells!

🧬🖥 🦠🧫🧪🔬 #Roche revealed their truly novel seq tech: - #SBX Sequencing By eXpansion - Stratos eXpandomers + Genia nanopores - Customizable Q:len - 200bp len but 150-1500 range - Q29 - 15-30B reads throughput - reusable I'm about to forget #the454incident omicsomics.blogspot.com/2025/02/roch...

"Retaining a fellow [Musk] whose actions contradict the ethical principles that the Royal Society purports to hold is tantamount to tacit approval and runs the risk of eroding public confidence in the Society’s commitment to its own standards." substack.com/home/post/p-...

Excited to share our work on archaeal 3D genome! This paper revealed how an archaeal SMC complex sculpts TAD-like domains by cooperating with a roadblock NAP and physical properties of DNA. Many congrats to our talented PhD student Kodai! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

There are now over 3000 signatories to my letter asking the Royal Society to explain why it has taken no action and said nothing about evident contraventions of its code of conduct by Elon Musk FRS. forms.gle/dBGaHk7SYUNA...

Unlike bacteria (except mycoplasma), archaea don't ubiquitously have a peptidoglycan equivalent at all. However, some lineages have pseudomurein. This study characterises its biosynthesis, contributing genes and evolutionary links with bacterial counterparts 🔗 journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....

Just reposting this because it quickly got buried by everything happening in the US.

💫NEW: Hervé, Scelfo et al. show that #chromosome missegregation induces #mTORC2 - & ATR-mediated p53 activation via a mechanosensitive checkpoint at the nuclear envelope triggered by altered heterochromatin content and increased nuclear membrane tension. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

After becoming the 2nd FRS to quit over Elon Musk, @andrewmillar.bsky.social explains why Musk's actions "are not compatible with the conduct required of a fellow...they undermine the purpose of the Royal Society" The @royalsociety.org has called fellows to a 3rd March meeting as the crisis grows

My open letter and FRS resignations reported in Nature: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Prokaryotic genome enthusiasts, don’t forget to register for this excellent meeting

The Royal Society in London has called a meeting to discuss the behaviour of fellows following a growing campaign by scientists over the membership of Elon Musk. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Thanks to the more than *1100* members of the scientific community who have signed the letter to insist that the Royal Society remains true to values that we all hold dear but that Musk FRS has ridden roughshod over. Please keep signing & sharing. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

I’ve heard various arguments for inaction from FRSs. But not a single one has argued that Musk should be kept on because he’s a great thing for science. They all say “Of course, I think Musk is terrible, but…”
