I wore a badge, that came with the 7" of Feelin' by the La's, that said "Skin up, you bastards!". I didn't know what "skin up" meant, I thought it was an anti-racist slogan. "Pay attention to racial disadvantage, for heaven's sake!" Something like that.

The right wing Policy Exchange has attacked the Church of England’s reparative measures after research showed its endowment fund’s connection with enslavement. Disagreement with reparations is one thing, but denigrating the historical research is disingenuous: alanlester.co.uk/blog/policy-...

There was a particular reason for this. They had played a 16-second piece by Poulenc (for Nadia Boulanger’s birthday) earlier on in the show, and two listeners contacted them to suggest the 1.13-second You Suffer. Which Petroc duly played.

Great thread. There was once a 20C British Politics Q that asked, "Was WWII the making of the Labour Party as a party of government?" I marked a great essay that argued indignantly (in good faith) that no, of course not, because Labour *weren't* the party of govt in the 30s and didn't cause WWII.

Off to York for the Britain and Ireland Association for Political Thought conference. It’s 7am and minus two degrees, but my scarf and @biapt.bsky.social hat match, so that’s something. #BIAPT2025

Putting these books in their rightful order

Parents shouldn't feed meat to children - regardless of parents' own views on this. Why? Children might later come to regard meat-eating as wrong. That would damage their future moral integrity, something that parents have duties to protect. So argues Daniel Butt. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

I just picked up a copy of George Bernard Shaw’s 1901 Fabian Tract “Socialism for Millionaires” and enclosed is this excellent Humanitarian League pamphlet, “How Ostrich Feathers are Obtained”. “The only consistently humane head-gear is that which dispenses wholly with feathers.” Author is “M.D.B.”

Tree is up in Balliol Lodge.

Hard to believe that it was 20 years ago that feminist political philosopher Susan Moller Okin died at only 57 years old. It was a bracing professional and personal loss. New newspaper article about her just published, including reflections from her family. newsroom.co.nz/2024/11/25/d...
