If you enjoy low stake & high fantasy, I highly suggest this book. This was such a cozy & short read. This book is the embodiment of kindness. It’s about an orc who is establishing a life of peace after a life of chaos. It’s also (L)G(B)TQ 🙂🏳️‍🌈 • #booksky #fantasy #lgbtq #cozy #cozybooks •

I found some. Long story short, it wasn't great. But I'm back now.

If you will sell out your diversity office because of an illegitimate threat from a wannabe dictator then you are going to cave on everything. Everything. And I can’t forgive any of that. And I will remember when you speak of threats to academic freedom what you did today.

I don't understand the Angel Reese criticisms. If its so easy to get the rebound on her own misses, why doesn't' everyone else do it too?

Very shill-like response to being called a shill.

Goodbye R03. It was fun writing you.

Since I’ve been getting this a lot - if you feel like supporting me by buying a jersey or something, I would rather you make a donation to Trans Lifeline or The Trevor Project www.thetrevorproject.org

The @uwrdrc.bsky.social - through SSA partnership - is critical in supporting my research agenda studying how policies can extend labor force participation among older adults. These RDRC programs are effective as an approach to fund a broad research agenda to inform SSA on critical issues.

Do I hate that I’m addicted to coffee? Not really cuz I drink coffee every morning so I don’t notice it lol

If you've already been doing this work, the next step is following the leadership of disabled folks. Many of us have been in this fight for years and know 1) what actions are most effective, and 2) how to create and use community for multilevel, multi-pronged, coordinated, strategic actions.

When academics, scientists, and (I assume) the national parks and forestry people are forced out of their jobs there aren’t really other equivalent jobs for them. These firings end careers and dreams and research and talent

Wife was a probationary employee let go over the weekend. She was a researcher with CMMI. If anyone has leads on jobs for a PhD social science researcher with an expertise in Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance, please let me know!

Fine, so I've been doing it wrong.

Joe Rogan is famous because he’s mediocre, incompetent, and entitled and he gives other mediocre, incompetent, and entitled men the permission to be mediocre, incompetent, and entitled.

We all need to be doing this. If you're in a precarious position, frame it as sharing important general knowledge about how the process of science works & let students make the connections instead of telling them. Share resources for further reading from .gov sites. Be brave but protect yourself.

In this last month I have made the mental transition from "air travel is very safe" to "at least it would be a relatively quick way to go"

NYC social work colleagues who work with SW students who are interested in substance use & addiction prevention, please encourage them to apply for the NYU Multidisciplinary Addiction Training Program. More info about the program tinyurl.com/NYUMATPROGRAM apps are due on April 30. Students get $10k!

University leaders: you have access to historically large levels of expertise about law, government, and poltical affairs. It’s okay—even important—to say “This is unconstitutional.”

The university that declares “We are not throwing trans kids under the bus, we are not ending diversity and inclusiveness efforts, and we are not opening our doors to ICE agents” would not only be uniquely heroic but would be doing some strong branding work on the cheap.

Has anybody out there made science zines (I know you have). And if so, would you be down to let me put them in my little free science zine library 🥺

Rewatching the Watchman series from 2019 a kind of perfect black history month lesson in the pilot episode especially ! What a great show, and worth revisiting in the midst of the second T rump term.

Have written about JD Vance’s Munich speech. In what may prove to be the biggest week for European security since 1991, it’s time Europe listened to what Trump and his Vice President are telling us. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Time to read Wanderers by @chuckwendig.bsky.social again and really get myself worked up.

US Science in Peril The stakes for the NIH & US science could not be higher. It is impossible to overestimate the transformative impact of fed funding on science & medicine Despite the need for reform, few investments rival the impact of the NIH’s $47.4 billion budget jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Not that anyone cares but a bunch of senior doj officials resigning over a corrupt instruction to drop a case was what triggered the Nixon impeachment, and in the Trump era it's just the 2pm scandal of a random Thursday and every day now has ~3 such scandals that would have ended any prior admin

I am getting papers out - I feel pressure to get them out before.... Before what I am not sure. Strange feeling. I had written all sorts of implications and recommendation sections in the Before Times. Now they seem strange and unrealistic. But we are in this work for the long haul. We carry on

This is the policy of people who fervently believe in eugenics. They are going to sell this as a thing that impacts Black and Brown people. But it's really designed to get rid of the poor white people (disabled, elderly, substance abuse issues etc.) that rich white people loathe.

NIH Council Reviews (where they decide on funding) has still not resumed, at least not at NIDA. Which is bad for many reasons. Here are 2: 1. People continue to die of overdoses at alarming rates & nothing new is being funded yet to address it. 2. The administration is still castrating the NIH.

Some commenting about NIH research support don't appreciate how incredibly competitive it is to get these funds. A typical study section reviews ~70-100 grants, most of which are outstanding but only ~10 end up getting funded. Can't think of any process in the private sector that is as competitive

I have a confession . . . I was an “overhead cost”. I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it. Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician. Please tag how #OverheadCostJob impact u.

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.
