Once we spot the lie, we still have to confront the actual evil deed. Because *that's* the thing we really need to stop.
People won't stop lying. It's in our nature. But dishonest people need to be stopped from doing bad things.
(Honest people do bad things, too. But they're much easier to stop.)

We get caught up in a lot of complexity, point/counterpoint, debunking and fact-checking. Those are only the means to find the lie.
We spot the lie, and shout, 'Ha! Found it! You're a liar!'
But we've only done half the job....

The Bank is meeting today. It'll be interesting to see if Governor Genia's tenure survives it.

Fair point. I agree that's not a great way to build rapport.
But we gotta recognise we work in an ailing industry.

and I have no problem with people sharing links to paywalled articles.
But your employer isn't doing you any favours by relying on it.

Oh I have. :)
I actually ran a paper and implemented a subscription model that didn't rely on a paywall.
It was inspired by the Guardian's design, which has proven profitable.
But there's a lot of inertia in trad media, and it's hard for them to be nimble.
I support your right to he paid...

But the model doesn't work, and it's a major reason smaller presses die.
Again, not the writer's fault for doing what you have to in order to out bread on the table.
But it's not a sustainable model.

It's not your fault that the paywall model is subscription-based, and that it's plain unreasonable to expect people to sign up just for the privilege of reading the one piece that caught their eye.
It's also not your fault that we don't get our news in take-it-or-leave it paper packets any more.

The only thing holding the centre together now is American society's sense of decency. I pray it's enough to make people pull back from the brink, to understand why we need rules, and why the rules need to apply to everyone.

"Yeah, but that's not how constitutional democracies work, boyo!"
True. And if you still had a functioning constitutional democracy, I'd be with you on that.
But you don't.
I feel sorrow for people who still have no idea how bad it can get.

The part I'm going to miss most is Fiji, Samoa and Tonga Twitter. There are some real jewels there. Really, it's all that was keeping me on the platform.
I wish I knew what to do to get them over here....

I wrote 20 Dollar Shirt after hearing his parliamentary speech addressing the massive anti-vax protests in Ottawa during the tail end of the COVID 19 crisis.
It was a remarkably respectful and uncompromising speech. One that reminds us what's possible in politics.
