I'm not sure why it took me so long to start using a tongue scraper. These things are *awesome*

Fishwife's Rainbow Trout is certainly better than Trader Joe's tinned trout…but not at the same multiple as the price difference. In my random-consumer opinion. Good job TJs.

Biomarkers, better bottles, and the ultimate nail file—February's health and fitness finds are as sharp as my new stationery game. https://thedannchronicles.com/p/february-2025

Taking notes is easy. Actually using them? That's the real flex. Here are 5 ways to make your notes work for you instead of gathering digital dust.

Is anyone else actually using Pixelfed?

As a kid who grew up on the west coast listening to Sublime, I NEVER would have guessed that 25 years later, the song that would capture the attention of the younger generation would be Caress Me Down.

Damn, @kagi.com keeps coming out with cool stuff

More excited for this movie than…well, anything.

Back when I finally started being responsible with credit cards, I'd pay each off in full twice a month (when I got paid). I told someone this, and they said it was actually *worse* to do that. They said to pay your bill once a month, MAX. I didn't push back. And I think about that exchange a lot.

Function Health is possibly the coolest way I've spent $500 in the past decade+

I was annoyed the BigQuery showed the total amount of data processed, but not a price estimate. So I made a thing. https://github.com/dannberg/bigquery-cost-estimator

Calorie tracking is so much better since ChatGPT. I actually feel like I'm making informed estimations rather than just winging it and never feeling like I'm doing it right.

I wish there was a per-app setting on the iPhone that would consolidate all that app's notifications into a single daily summary. I'm in some group chats that I don't want to mute, but don't need push notifications for every message.

I love this for me.

Just experimenting with the app Croissant to publish this simultaneously to Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads. Don't mind me.

A healthy techier you, some recurring favs, the music video kings return, architecture on the big screen, and machines hold my hand while I code.

It’s 2025. How does Google Docs not have better support for Markdown?

I think it’s officially time to stop shipping new electronics without charging cables. I don’t need another garbage cable to charge my new USB-C gadget. I’ve got that covered.

what's the science behind drinking non-stop seltzer in the office but wanting none of it ever while working from home?

My office is right above a Shake Shack (the entrance is right next to the exhaust for their shop) and the smell is absolutely revolting

Sometimes, when my mind drifts, I'll imagine Hershey's re-releasing discontinued S'mores Bar.

Wednesday is really the best day of the week for Xmas/New Years to fall on. Can’t wait for 2030.

Every year, I love when a whole new generation of people learns about *that* Folgers commercial.

I recently created a new bare-bones Obsidian vault just for work (to keep my personal and work separate). Added a few plugins, templates, and back things up daily to Github.

There was a phase of the internet where every single site had an April Fools joke. The people rebelled and it (largely) went away. Looking forward to that happening with all these year end Wrapped.

🎁 This month in The Dann Chronicles: Non-human beings as zookeepers, a pseudonym uncovered, Kieran Culkin on acting, avoiding ripoffs, and the fantastic new world of tinned fish. thedannchronicles.com/p/december-2...

Google yourself and find your LinkedIn page search result. Is the site description as absolutely BONKERS as mine??

Finally, a government fine again a Big Tech giant that would actually make an impact on the company. Russia coming after Google with a $20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 fine (which is apparently more than the GDP of the entire planet for a millennium)

Continuing my annual tradition of sharing stats from my content and favorite things throughout the year. Here’s my Best of 2024 post! 🎊 dannb.org/blog/2024/be...

I love love loved the game Firewatch. And I'm still actively mourning the fact that Campo Santo's follow up (In The Valley Of Gods) is indefinitely postponed/cancelled.

Is Russia China's Canada?

Killer Mike’s ADIDAS > Korn’s ADIDAS > the brand ADIDAS

Ugh I really need to turn off the internet today

Just used Automator to create an application that runs a script that git commits all changes to my Obsidian vault and pushes to GitHub as backup. Then used Apple Calendar to run it every day. It’s a hack but it’s *my* hack.

All modern performance art is basically just people running around a stage non-stop for an hour.

My toxic trait is judging a place based on how long it takes the bathroom sink water to get hot

I've been so compelled by the topic of UAPs since that 2017 NYTimes article, but I'm *so sick* of theories, guesses, dreams, and wishful thinking. If UAPs are really real, just give us the damn info that we have. Let science and the scientific method take a crack at it. Give us something tangible.

I’m starting a new job next week and will be working in-office Tuesday through Thursday. Personally, I’m excited to be back on site. A daily subway commute is prime reading time! And I just don’t have the same reading habits working from home.

Who else 1) has a fun custom domain that they're using as their bsky handle and 2) has something fun hosted on that domain?

I sort of miss when there was “one short-form social media site to rule them all.” Bouncing between Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, and Substack Notes is exhausting. But I think that’s just the way it will be for the foreseeable future.

Following the UAP hearing the other day, I’m really hoping we get some tangible evidence of aliens declassified just because I could really use the distraction.

I’m so happy that Bluesky keeps getting more users. It’s my fav of the bunch, so far.
