NEW: The CFPB has been gutted. More than 1,400 workers received RIF notices this afternoon, agency sources tell me. Around 200 employees are left. www.wired.com/story/cfpb-h...

BREAKING: Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez has been released. This is the moment he reunited with his mom.

Golly gee, I guess there's literally nothing anyone can do about this. Sheesh, I guess we'll just have to let it happen, oh well. FFS. When are they going to start enforcing it? I'm glad courts are saying Stop. I just want to know when there'll be consequences for failure to follow the orders.

Coercively demanding somebody sign something in a language they can't even read, and refusing to tell them what it is, is such openly Kafkaesque authoritarianism. These people are not a government, they are a criminal enterprise, much more accurately described as "gang members" than their victims.

Head Start, an early childhood education program for low income families, is on the chopping block. Growing up, my own mom was an aide with the program; it’s helped countless young mothers, including the one who tells her story here. www.kqed.org/news/1203596...

Deep respect to Sen. Tammy Duckworth for saying what too many won’t: Republicans have shown ZERO resistance to Trump & Musk’s brutal agenda—jacking up costs, firing thousands of veterans, and threatening to gut Medicaid & Social Security. If they cared, they’d grow a spine. @duckworth.senate.gov

1. In 2025, over 850 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been filed across the United States - the most in US history. Most bills target transgender people. The bills have also grown more extreme, reverting drivers licenses, arresting trans people in bathrooms, and more. Subscribe to support my journalism.

A desperate sign of weakness, not of strength.

The people inside the Democratic Party cautioning restraint on kidnappings without due process should go down to Argentina and Brazil and talk to the Mothers of the Disappeared

A distraction is what a laser pointer is to your cat. The federal gov’t detaining and jailing and deporting people without due process, and without taking accountability for their actions and, in fact, slandering those denied their rights, is 100 percent worthy of your unflagging attention.

Update: 96-year-old’s bank account was cleaned out by Social Security on the grounds that he had been dead for a while and they were reclaiming benefits SS had paid to the allegedly but not actually dead man. He now has no money. DOGE strikes again. Anybody know a lawyer for this?

Trump threatens to block all 10,000 international students from attending Harvard unless the school turns over student info they’ll use for new visa revocations and deportations. Every day feels like a fresh round of this country stabbing itself in the face. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/u...

U.S.-born man from Georgia held for ICE under Florida’s new anti-immigration law georgiarecorder.com/2025/04/17/g...

WOW. One of the Venezuelans whom Kristi Noem tried to render to El Salvador's slave prison managed to avoid removal and was able to make it to immigration court, and you'll never guess what happened: THE GOVERNMENT GAVE NO EVIDENCE OF HIS GANG MEMBERSHIP. Due process ftw

Does she think everyday Americans aren't? If she can't do the job, then she needs to step down, along with any other Senator or Rep who isn't brave enough to do the damn job.

It’s not the video games. Not the social media. It’s not the pot or the porn. It’s not that there are too many doors or too few police. It’s the gun the shooter was able to get. And it’s the gun the shooter was able to fire. It’s the gun. It’s the gun. It’s the motherfucking gun.

To be clear: I have been busy with, well, yeah, but fuck JK Rowling and the anti-trans hate she happily basks in. (And fuck everyone over on this side of the ocean who decided that hating on a minority population like she has was the right approach to feeling better about yourself.)

People are so desperate for principled leadership and resistance that they are *donating to Harvard*

Hearing 80%, 1,400, of CFBP employees received a RIF notice today. Let’s be clear: this is an ILLEGAL use of the RIF process. What happened is Trump tried to close CFPB in Feb. A judge stopped him. Now he’s using RIF to close CFBP. No. Gutting CFBP is illegal. The courts must stop this too.

oh fuck there's been an E. Coli outbreak and the Trump administration essentially hid it

Donald Trump said he wants ICE to detain and deport US citizens, and is taking active steps to defy the constitution and the courts to make that possible. Anyone saying “oh that could never happen” is naive or lying. The threat is real.

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to end routine food safety inspections.

Happening now in downtown Yonkers, NY: Flash rally to “Bring Kilmar Home!” organized by @nycd16-indivisible.bsky.social

Senator Lisa Murkowski just said that she and her colleagues are afraid & anxious because retaliation from the president is real. This is not normal or right. Our leader is a tyrant, but the same people who are scared, are the ones who could actually stop him. youtube.com/shorts/FNvbg...

Trump signed multiple executive orders today targeting environmental protections. One order removes safeguards for a vast marine sanctuary in the south-central Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument had

As destructive and capricious as these tariffs are they are arguably the greatest abuse of power in American history as 1) Trump has no authority to levy tariffs 2) they impact every person in the world.

How is it possible U.S. citizens are being held as illegal aliens in America even after they produce their birth certificate? This is intolerable. www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/...

Those who survived the Weimar Republic days best. Got out early. We recommend having an escape plan prepared and ready to implement, should efforts to preserve our system of checks and balances fail. What we do now Echos in eternity

The good news is that the constitution provides ways for Congress and the Judiciary to reign in a power-hungry president. The bad news is those people are all scared of him.

continued appreciation to @vanhollen.senate.gov for fighting for Kilmar’s return - and for understanding that actively driving attention to this crisis is a core part of making that happen. Perhaps someone read @chrislhayes.bsky.social A Siren’s Call? youtu.be/Mnqx_WpPQuQ?...

Ol' boy just said, "NOOOWWW here's a little story I got to tell..."

This guy's a hero. Good shit, Senator.

Legit the best thing any Dem has done to date in response to Trump and it happened because he cared more about serving his constituents than public polling about immigration.

When far too many are choosing silence, we need everyone to raise our collective voice now.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

I'd vote for AOC in a heartbeat. I also voted for Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. My biggest concern is this country for some reason won't vote women into the office of President, but I say we try anyway. She'd be great. I'm ready for someone who will stand up for people, and she does.

Almost as if one is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.......

Everyone deserves due process. Even bad guys.* --- * We don't actually know who is and isn't a "bad guy" without due process.

1. This is a legitimately courageous stance in a moment when many elites are choosing the path of appeasement 2. Strategic alumni organizing will be crucial to make it stick. What I'm saying is: if you went to Harvard and you want everyone to know but in a humble way, THIS IS YOUR MOMENT
