Elbows up. Stick together. 🇨🇦

NEW: Global EV sales grew 18% year-on-year in Jan 2025 Was this due to the "devastating collapse" of 21% growth in Europe? The "stalling" 12% growth in China? Maybe the "plunging" 22% rise in US/Canada? Or "faltering" 50% rest-of-world growth…? Data: Rho Motion 🤷‍♂️

Dear @pbsnews.bsky.social when a fascist is threatening an invasion and annexation of a sovereign nation you in fact do not have to respond by explaining how it would work WTF is “Here’s what it would take to transform Canada from a nation to a state”?

"Canada First" may be an enticing slogan and sentiment, but it risks making things harder for Canada. www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

"When you tally up that savings over someone’s typical four-year lease or seven-year car loan, suddenly, even without the incentives, the EV saves you an absolute fortune." vancouversun.com/news/local-n...

Can confirm.

Nearly every major capex commitment we've seen from OEMs in the past 5 years is for EV production. Toyota is no exception. That lends itself to a quick retirement of legacy assets when the time comes. You're either getting EV and battery plants or you're losing. 🔌💡🚗 insideevs.com/news/749645/...

Worthy of attention in the Canadian conversation about "what next?" -- the giant climate and energy policy pendulum swing happening in the US could make Canada a MORE attractive destination for low-carbon investment IF we don't follow suit. Keep Canada Boring. polarisstrategy.ca/2024/05/13/k...

The tariffs may be paused but the relationship is broken. Trump and the next Trump can’t be trusted. Canadians need to look inward and elsewhere, diversifying away from the US, and getting stronger in the process. Let’s make that the legacy we build from this. Bye America, Buy Canadian 🇨🇦

Premier David Eby has instructed all 29 Crown Agencies (BC Hydro, ICBC, LCB, etc) and all Ministires to buy Canadian Goods and Services First. President Trump has essentially ripped up our Trade Agreement. This means we don’t need to abide by it either. So what does this mean for BC? (1/4)

“even Enbridge doesn’t really know how to disconnect from Enbridge.”

Very encouraging to see Canada achieve an 8th place ranking (now cracking the Top 10!), with 19% growth to just over US$35 billion invested in the energy transition in 2024. about.bnef.com/energy-trans...

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will rise by at least 17% this year to over 20 million cars, helped by an extension of China's auto trade-in subsidies, research firm Rho Motion forecast on Tuesday. www.reuters.com/business/aut... #Upshift 🔌🚗 🔌💡

Beyond tech industry implications of DeepSeek, I am wondering what this does to the ridiculous projections of electricity demand growth in the next 5 years. This is a good time to take stock of unrealized efficiency gains in AI compute before we end up building a bunch of 30-year gas plants.

So many of the big challenges BC faces require solutions that cut across multiple ministries, so it's great to see Meghan Sali providing this policy development leadership in the Premier's office. @davidebybc.bsky.social will surely benefit from her wise counsel & focus on delivering solutions.

It's wild that this isn't getting more attention: Beijing’s official target, set in 2020, for EVs to account for 50 per cent of car sales by 2035, will be achieved 10 years ahead of schedule: China is set to sell more EVs than ICE vehicles in 2025 www.ft.com/content/0ebd... #energysky

This is 🎯- “Americans on both political sides have essentially agreed to frame emerging electrical technologies as being fundamentally about climate change, instead of about national power and prosperity. This is a dangerous misconception.” www.noahpinion.blog/p/america-is...

Hydro-Québec's Sabia on the Churchill Falls deal: “These projects are clear statements that Canada has the ability to do big things,” (gift article)🔌💡 www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/4558b9d...

Leadership musings... A good leader knows when to step up. A great leader knows when to step in. An excellent leader knows when to step back. And an exceptional leader knows when to step down.

Details to come, but listening to BC gov't/BC Hydro press conference re: call-for-power results and they are encouraging! - 9 wind projects will secure 30 year contracts - 5,000 GWh (more than original plan of 3,000GWh, which is great news) 1/

A big part of their strategy is ringing the alarm about whether B.C has sufficient electricity, most recently: globalnews.ca/news/1089280... As previously noted, B.C’s energy debate needs less heat and more fact www.biv.com/news/comment...

You have to love it when an attempt to go backwards boomerangs in favour of faster progress. Congrats and thanks to all those involved, I needed this good news.

I love spotting electrification in the wild.

Tough to keep fighting #climate battles we have already won. But that is where we find ourselves in #Vancouver 🇨🇦 this week as our populist-right mayor and his majority council seek to roll back a restriction on gas in new construction that's been on the books since Jan 2022. A 🧵... (1/10)

A message to UK Conservatives: "We should be restating our commitment to net zero 2050 and laying out an inspiring, affordable, job-creating, reality-based programme to get there. If we don’t, we will remain in opposition. And we will deserve to." conservativehome.com/2024/11/15/m...

@janrosenow.bsky.social neatly unpacks the primary energy fallacy. "the argument that we cannot possibly replace the vast amount of fossil fuel we currently use with clean energy seems compelling at first glance. The good news is that we don’t have to." medium.com/@jan.rosenow...

*taps mic* Each year, I hear about all the reasons that EVs will fail, and each year sales keep going up. On track for just under 17 million in 2024, in line with BNEF forecast's from the start of the year about.bnef.com/blog/are-glo...

The world is on track to blow past the target of halting warming at 1.5C. Is it game over? Are we hurtling over tipping points? What is the physical science basis for this target? What does it mean to be headed beyond 1.5C? On SHIFT KEY, we talk with NASA climate scientist Kate Marvel to find out 🔌💡

Hey #energysky🔌💡, Ontario, Canada is seeking feedback to inform Ontario’s first integrated energy resource plan. I'm working on DER elements of this consultation, let me know if you want to participate in DER consultation session. Submissions due Dec 13. ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-9...

Spare a thought and give thanks for the crews working diligently to get the electrons flowing again! 🙏🏼

How do we get people to swap fossil appliances for electric? We need new heuristics says @rewiringamerica.bsky.social and @heatmap.news! I bet #energysky could generate 1,000. GO!

It won't dominate the headlines, but bringing the BC Climate Action Secretariat and Energy ministries together into a *new* Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions is an important step forward. More: www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

A petrostate deciding to sabotage any kind of negotiated decarbonization is probably the least surprising thing to happen here. "Consensus" is going to have to mean something other than "unanimity" if there is going to be any success. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/18/c...

Without being pollyannish @rjcsmith.bsky.social lays out the opportunity to continue climate progress in the US, regardless of what the President-elect might do: www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/6e29e64...

Some good news for a change. China's EVs are helping lower oil demand in China, which is the 2nd largest consumer of oil. The same is happening here in the US. Love to see it. #EnergySky www.reuters.com/business/ene...

Good stuff, busting the myth that it’s Level 2 home charging or bust. For some, sure, but not all.

About 850K BC 🏠 heat with gas. According to a report I co-authored for OPEN, homeowners replace about 5% of them each year, almost ALL with another gas furnace. I'm stoked entrepreneurs like this dude are attacking the barriers. To meet BC's #climate targets, the heat pump market needs a shake up.

"Their startup is called Jetson Home Inc., and as the name suggests, it is not a typical local HVAC business. It’s a future-looking climate change play with ambitions to grow big by making heat pumps easier and cheaper to obtain." www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art... 🔌💡
