This would be in my Room 101

I'm not currently on the committees of any, but can literary studies/English scholarly societies consider this too? All pressure is good pressure.

I know this has already been adjudicated--apparently, the Chalamet Dylan thing is not bad--but fwiw I am rewatching *Im Not There* and good golly there are more ideas (intellectual, visual, and otherwise) in the first 30 minutes of Haynes's movie than you can find in fifty biopics.

Our third university of the day getting into trouble is Birmingham City University, where all the staff have been offered severance terms. It's a tsunami now I'm afraid. www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midland...

On the 91 from Caledonian Road to the BFI to see Les Rendez-vous d'Anna with an intro from film studies doyen Angela McRobbie. This will be my 3rd viewing in a month but the first in the cinema space. Neil & I had a great chat about the film on a recent bonus podcast: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT_p...

I'm on this radio channel at 7pm this evening talking with Martin Holmes about Play for Today for his Vision on Sound programme, also available later as a podcast. Definitely want to return to talk about my memories of growing up watching TV c. 1988 - 2000... fabradiointernational.com

Blir yr av att läsa nyheter. Vad är ens nyheter. Eller "nyheter".

Fascinating discussion about the BFI’s CHANTAL AKERMAN season, featuring Celine Brouwez (Foundation Chantal Akerman) and Isabel Stevens (Sight and Sound + season curator). Thanks @jamesewand.bsky.social for flagging this up! #FilmSky #ChantalAkerman #cinema

Peckinpah’s THE GETAWAY is one of my favorite films of all time. This @cinephiliabeyond.org article is fascinating and a great way to celebrate his birthday. I didn’t realize the BTS stuff was so crazy. This link also has the Walter Hill script, which I intend to dive into soon!

Do you want to hear it talk? explores the representation of speaking machines in science fiction cinema. Through iconic voices-HAL 9000, the Daleks, Robocop etc-the film examines how synthesised speech shapes the thematic & narrative fabric of sci-fi speculation. open.substack.com/pub/dariolli...

Whenever anyone laments the state we’re in, they’re met with a chorus of “but what do we do?” As plenty of good options are available, this response might often be wilful impotence*. I invite you all to nominate in this thread the best proposals and practices, around which we should gather. Thanks

open.spotify.com/episode/5fXM... The Black Rodeo season at the BFI focuses on the African American Western. This gave me the opportunity to speak to Mario & Mandela van Peebles. Trust me, they are as cool as they look. Listen for free.

A great recent critical concept is @jordanscarroll.bsky.social's "hermeneutics of obtuseness," which he applies specifically to the way right-wingers read sf texts in favor of their views when those texts are clearly resistant to those views. A sort of reverse "reading against the grain."

It was a joy to interview Mario van Peebles & his son Mandela for The Cinematologists, about his new film Outlaw Posse. Screening as part of the Black Rodeo season at the BFI which highlight the history of African Americans on the Western mythos. www.patreon.com/cinematologists or wherever you pod.
