In the 1970s, the film every Bengali family seemed to know was the Poseidon Adventure. The mums loved the soppy melodrama, and cried over Shelley Winters. And everyone cried when Hackman's magisterial lead performance reached its watery end. A memorable introduction to a glittering career.
