Slightly off topic, please excuse. We don’t just provide survey and advice for #Suffolk Swifts, @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social also provide assistance to help other rarer breeding species needing nesting space. Just delivered both Little & Tawny Owl, Spotted Flycatcher & Grey Wagtail nest boxes

A Swift Community Set has been donated to St John’s United Reform Church in Ipswich; 6 Swift boxes and a 240V call system. We have more sets available for suitable prominent elevations of public buildings around Suffolk. Pass the word! @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social

We were delighted to reinstate a Barn Owl box in a beautiful old barn where the Owls once lived. Seeing the space restored as a safe haven for future generations of Barn Owls is incredibly rewarding 🦉@suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirding

Thrilled to see an article on our project in this weekends EADT! @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirding

@suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

A big thank you to the Waldringfield Wildlife Group for inviting us to speak about our project and share insights on Barn Owls. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout. Special thanks to @dave09.bsky.social for helping with the talk! @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirding

A brilliant talk @sbgbarnowls.bsky.social by Sally & @dave09.bsky.social for Waldringfield Wildlife Group, fabulous to see a packed hall thoroughly enjoying hearing all the fascinating facts and about the project's work! @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirding

Excellent @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social walk around Thorpeness yesterday thanks to leader @david-walsh.bsky.social with best views ever of White-fronts & Goosander and great company as always! Very lucky with the weather too for a change🌞 #suffolkbirding

Meanwhile in Europe's largest area of lowland heath, the New Forest Dog Owners Group's motto is "On the Forest, off the lead" + object to dog restrictions in the National Park, even after a dog destroyed Curlews nests. And the Kennel Club has guidance to object to restrictions. Just depressing :(

"It was found that 85% of the tracked dogs were walked off-lead in the breeding season despite signage requesting owners not to let their pets run free due to ground-nesting birds. At Snelsmore Common, Berkshire, more than 90% of the site was disturbed by dogs, reducing its conservation value"

A tracking study has found that dogs walked off-lead cause significantly more disturbance on lowland heaths than pets kept on the lead:

Another boot load of #Swift boxes from JT, plus a couple of Spotted Fly ones @rice1john.bsky.social. This Swift box was the 500th he’s made for Suffolk & 24 were were distributed today for Felixstowe, Trimley and Hollesley. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social #Conservation

I wonder just what type of person would think it clever to dispose of 🐕 poo bags like this when there are bins only a short walk away.....

Waldringfield Wildlife Group presents BOSS: The Future of Barn Owls An illustrated talk by Sally Nelson and Dave Pearsons Saturday 8th February 2025 at Waldringfield Village Hall, IP12 4QP Doors open at 10.45am for 11.00am start @sbgbarnowls.bsky.social @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #SuffolkBirding

Yet another box drop thanks to Technotrack Engineering and the wonderful Nigel! 🦉 Tomorrow we put them up! #suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirds

@ukhousemartins.bsky.social

Makes all our efforts so worthwhile when a beauty like this appears! #suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirds

Visit to #RSPBMinsmere marred by arrogant, entitled dog owners with dogs on trails clearly signed (signs way too small) ‘no dogs’. Both on North Wall( free parking for romp on the beach) One was a slobbering off-lead Alsatian! Sick of this issue! #Natures_Voice #RSPB

Ending the year as we mean to go on: thinking outside the barn—have an owl-mazing New Year! #suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #suffolkbirds

If you have a Barn Owl box, now is the time to clean it out or make any repairs by the end of January. Choose a dry, fine afternoon when the Owl could be hunting. Wear goggles and a mask and leave a small layer of debris. If you need further advice please contact us. #suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Cracking drake Pintail at Levington Creek this afternoon. #birds #ukbirding #SuffolkBirds

There are some excellent field trips coming up in 2025, all put together by @wildlifegig.bsky.social. The trips are good for those new to birding and for the more experienced. For information on membership of Suffolk Bird Group go to www.suffolkbirdgroup.org SuffolkBirds

Always a pleasure to come home to the latest Suffolk Bird Group Harrier magazine, and good to get the 2025 indoor talks & outdoor walks on the calendar early. Magnificently edited by @wildlifegig.bsky.social as always. #SuffolkBirds @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

My main worry with this whole 'grey belt' thing is how they're defining it. I see the housing minister refers to "low-value scrub land" alongside things like... disused petrol stations. Low-value scrub sounds suspiciously like high-value habitat. www.theguardian.com/society/2024...

A free Swift Community Set has gone to Holbrook Methodist Church; multiple nest boxes plus a 240V call system. They are happy to install & keen to play the calls next May. SOSSwifts have more sets available; schools, shops, pubs etc. Get in contact! @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social #SuffolkBirds

Suffolk Birds 2023 is now out. Looks like yet another masterpiece of a county bird report. Compiled by Suffolk Bird Group, published by Suffolk Naturalists’ Society. Congrats to all for all the hard work! #UKBirding #SuffolkBirding

SBG has supplied Tawny/Little Owl, Spotted Flycatcher & Nuthatch nest boxes to Melton Park Management Company whose land encompasses Hospital Grove Woods. Richard Llewellyn (left) receiving them. John Turner donated his time making nest boxes using materials paid for by a SBG bursary #SuffolkBirding

Two more boxes put up today before the rain set in! Two wonderful oak trees overlooking perfect habitat. Some Barn Owls are going to be very lucky! #suffolkbirding @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Great trip to Lynford and West Suffolk with @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social yesterday, despite the murky weather. Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Marsh Tit plus loads of Red Kites #SuffolkBirding

From Mary Colwell "IMPORTANT The campaign for a GCSE in Natural History has stalled. Labour see it as a "Conservative initiative" and won't progress it. It is not a political football, every child has the right to learn about the wonder of the natural world. Pls ask you MP to lobby for it now" 🌿

Please note Jack @jackabbott.bsky.social

I’m helping with this exciting new project ! Get in touch if you have nesting house martins, in Suffolk & would like to help 😁

Good morning! This @wildjustice.bsky.social petition on driven grouse shooting is 2nd most-signed petition in last hour. We approach 6k signatures. I'd love to reach 10k before 3:30pm (ie first 24hrs). It'll be tough but let's send a strong message to Defra. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

A day for staying indoors, so here's a photo of a Redpoll, taken on an outing with @dave09.bsky.social in February 2024 #birds #birding #SuffolkBirds

SOSSwifts offer free surveys & advice, we stock nest boxes too. We visited a Woodbridge location this afternoon so 3 Swift nest boxes will be going. The homeowners now know the importance of playing Swifts’ calls next May to attract in the younger birds & how to do it. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

25 Suffolk Bird Group members attended yesterday’s walk. It was much enjoyed and we recorded over 60 species.

Super Suffolk Bird Group walk around Dunwich this morning; up the coast then back around through the forest. Great Egret, Spotted Redshank and close in Red-throated Diver were super, along with Whooper Swan north & Guillemots south too. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Save Our Suffolk Swifts will be at the Suffolk Bird Group birding trip tomorrow morning, they’ll be a boot load of nest boxes at the Dunwich beach car park for ‘just in case’ @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Save Our Suffolk Swifts have a talk tomorrow evening as below. All are most welcome. Learn about Swifts, their plight and how easy it is to conserve them.

I've seen firsthand the impact of, for instance, deer inside an electric fence on a managed reserve decimating Avocet nesting season this year! So yes. Not strictly predation but highly problematic.
