Our media is wildly ill-equipped to deal with reality in 2025.

Here’s how to fix this. Just call the show “why are Canadians so pissed off at us, at NPR, at NYT, and anyone else who thinks it’s a fun thought experiment to annex our country?” Then let Canadians call in and tell you why they’re mad. And make the Americans listen. Don’t ever say “51st state.”

Unsurprisingly, the billboard was paid for by a group led by Peter Downing, founder of the Wexit group. I wrote a few weeks ago on Daveberta.substack.com that separatists like Downing and former WCC MLA Gordon Kesler are now calling on Alberta to become the 51st state. 👎

Price comparisons of surgeries done at private facilities vs AHS costs, courtesy of the new documents obtained by the Globe and Mail. Given what has been going on within the public health care system, especially the ongoing closures in rural Alberta, this data is horrifying.

SCOOP: Sam Mraiche, owner of the firm that imported meds from Turkey, is a part owner in two private surgical facilities that last year were negotiating deals with inflated rates compared to competitor, according to documents www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber... w/ @alannasmith.bsky.social

A quick internet search shows that the property mentioned in the article appears to have been, until it shut down last year, the Edmonton distribution center for Scott-Bathgate Ltd, known to many as “The Nutty Club.”

Scoop - Alberta minister hailed as "gutsy" after he called for health minister's resignation says he has asked auditor general to investigate land transaction within his own ministry. Mraiche Profited from Quick Sale of Property to UCP Government via @thetyee.ca thetyee.ca/News/2025/02...

All AHS and Health Quality Council infrastructure. All schools and post secondaries. All buildings in all ministries.

The minister who called for LaGrange's removal may now be implicated in a separate swindle involving the same players, government documents show. @charlesrusnell.bsky.social broke the latest story in this evolving scandal. thetyee.ca/News/2025/02...

The applicants have argued the order, which only applies to students with special needs, infringes on their Charter rights. The judge said the minister has until Feb. 27 to consider a new ministerial order that aligns with the court ruling. www.stalbertgazette.com/alberta-news...

Booing the national anthem of a country your President has threatened to annex isn’t the flex you think it is.

Former PC MLA Dave Quest announces he’s dropping out of the federal Conservative nomination race in Edmonton Griesbach. He’s endorsing City Councillor Karen Principe, who entered the race yesterday. Membership cut off is tomorrow. 👀

The next shoe drops. Grade-A investigative reporting by @carrietait.bsky.social and @alannasmith.bsky.social. ⭐️

In about 7 days there’s a good chance the NDP will have more seats in the Alberta Legislature than the Liberals and NDP combined in the Ontario Legislature. 🤠

Premier Smith is very skilled at muddying the waters.

Smith is dodging the allegations around political interference into AHS contracts. She reiterates that AHS negotiated and signed all contracts.

Premier Smith repeats over and over again that AHS, and especially Mentzeloupoulos, were foot dragging over procurement. Implies that is why the former AHS CEO was fired. Except Mentzelopoulos was fired without cause.

NEW: A couple days ago, Breakdown host Nate Pike announced that he was being court ordered to wipe the Alberta politics show from the web as part of a libel lawsuit from a well-connected Alberta businessman. This development should concern all journalists. open.substack.com/pub/theorcha...

Poilievre’s new “Canada First” language on Trump and his threats to annex Canada has to be looked at through the lens of the Conservative Party’s voter coalition, in which many support Trump and think he’s doing a good job.

This is a good recounting of how Family Day came to be in Alberta. I covered #ableg for CTV in those days and was in the thick of the politics of it. BTW: I still refer to this as the Dale Getty memorial weekend. 😉

Have you been wondering about the origins of Family Day? @daveberta.bsky.social has you covered: open.substack.com/pub/davebert... #ableg

😎 Drugs, gaffes and good intentions: The Big Family Day Debate of 1989. The origin story of Alberta's mid-winter holiday. daveberta.substack.com/p/the-big-fa...

Of course the Conservative take at the time was 'Who needs a winter break to be invigorated because "You have to keep moving or you'll freeze your ass." Also, 'An idea isn't a good idea unless Conservatives propose it.' 🤷

Happy Family Day weekend fellow AB’rs. From the inestimable @daveberta.bsky.social’s substack:

That time of year is once again upon us: the Family Day long weekend. 35 years after Albertans first marked the third Monday in February as a provincial holiday in 1990, most of us who get the day off work take it for granted, but there is a big political story behind how this day was created. 🤠

The latest: Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says Health Minister Adriana LaGrange will be removed from decisions related to investigations into the health system, but will continue to oversee her portfolio. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber...

It’s been a busy week in Alberta politics but I’m looking forward to publishing this piece tomorrow morning!

American backpackers in Europe have owed him a debt of gratitude ever since. Happy Flag Day!

Americans really need to stop rationalizing this. If Trump ever did annex Canada, which he is now threatening to do on a daily basis, it’s very unlikely he’s going to give Canadians any kind of meaningful voting rights (and no one up here is going to vote for the do-nothing Democrats).

“What we have seen though, since the tariff announcements, is that our sales from Canada into the U.S. have actually dropped very significantly,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet’s chief executive officer. www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/arti...

This is extraordinary. There is a principle of Cabinet solidarity; every Cabinet minister MUST stand together. To see one minister criticize or suggest a colleague should be shuffled is incredible.

“Infrastructure Minister Peter Guthrie sent a memo Thursday to his cabinet colleagues urging quick action, and a readiness to hand any potential criminal matters to the RCMP.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

🤦‍♂️

As Ernest Hemingway once wrote “How did you go bankrupt?" Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.” The same can be said of political scandals, so stay tuned, Alberta. 👀 daveberta.substack.com/p/changing-t...
