I really enjoyed doing this History Mixtapes podcast with Katherine, I hope people like the playlist I put together as well. Songs about poverty is a powerful back catalogue to work with.

The History Mixtapes episode with @davehitchcock.bsky.social is out now! Here it is on Apple Podcasts. So much food for thought in this interview! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

I'm sorry in advance for the big circuit conferences held in the USA. They're... not going to be very well attended by international scholars for quite some time I suspect. Them's the breaks. I wouldn't go to a conference in Hungary either.

University history lecturers spend much of the first year survey courses unravelling students' conviction that a source is useless because "it is bias (sic)". No, the bias or perspective is precisely what we're interested in.

Ah but douglas, unfortunately for the people of Pakistan men like you *are* very much part of their history.

The shift in England from HEFCE to Office for Students: 'One little discussed impact of this change was an avalanche of university borrowing that has dramatically shifted the priorities and risk profile of English higher education.' And then there is what HEFCE's demise has done to research....

This is 1000% VC must resign territory. Since clearly Bolton is not going to cough up the goods on why this lamprey is still attached, MPs and councillors and the union will need to step up. £8 million over six years, basically to one guy. Said he's gone, in print. He's not. Massive scandal here.

Eric Adams line prosecutor Hagan Scotten, resigning rather than filing "dismissal-with-leverage" motion: "I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me." Via @NYTimes.com https://buff.ly/4hVJGLX

The chuds on television insisting it's legal because "all power" is invested in the executive are trying to lie into existence a trump version of the Eikon Basilike (1649).

Matt Goodwin deserves a Kendrick Lamar diss track solely about what a spineless attention-seeking little quisling he is.

I know people often make fun of German combination words and „is there a German word for it“ is a running joke but watching the US administrations fall in line, the German word for it is Selbstgleichschaltung. You can guess why German has a word for that.

In the medical history lectures I've given to med students and to my upper years, when we get to smallpox I'm like this is the unleashed fury of an angry old testament god, do not fuck with it. About 400,000 a year claimed by it that we know of in the c18th, I think it was.

I’ll set aside the tactical question for a second, and just point out that legally it’s not possible for UCU to take UK-wide strike action in protest at the redundancy crisis unfolding across the HE sector. This is a matter of fact, not opinion.

I vibrated in a perfect (sad) harmony with this piece, it says everything I want to say. In particular, the (to me) absolutely BEYOND IT idea that a university can not teach history, and somehow still call itself a university. How far have we fallen to even be able to think that.

I'm up for gently mocking Thrifty, but in his jeremiad here he's right on several scores, not least the bureaucratic informational and reporting demands of the OfS, a lot of which are absurd and cost universities quite a lot to service every year. It's a vulture regulator and needs complete reform.
