She is right. The Trump admin is literally doing this. They terminated humanitarian parole for hundreds of thousands of people who came here LEGALLY through a government program, and they are calling all those people "illegal aliens."

I think this is a revealing piece on Starmer, less for what I learn about him, and more for what I'm hearing come out of his circle when they reflect. Whichever aide said "there is no economic growth or national security without hope” is absolutely correct. Hope needs to be rebuilt though.

This is good news and I'm guessing Nick Crowson's been on their case about the 1824 Act. If they'd ever asked me or any other historian of vagrancy we'd have said the exact same, the 1824 Act was retrograde and cruel *at the time*. Much worse now.

I know we overuse the phrase "history shows that", but history shows that there is inevitably a constituency for authoritarianism and strongman dictatorship, and, that it can be cultivated (tolerance paradox). These people often believe harder than the cynics at the top, will do more, and do worse.
