One of out prickly pear cacti is flowering. So is one of our yucca. This year our native gardens are really taking off.

Warm up drawing of a boot

Just realized why cicada song is so comforting to me. It’s just taking the screaming in my head outside.

We’ve been planting native plants for the usual reasons but this is a bonus I’m really excited about.

Today was a complete zombie day - zero energy. But I seem to have made it thru. Doodled these goofy heads during class (I know, good student).

Saw a picture yesterday that reminded me of this super old drawing. This, I think, is the first time I tried ink washes.

For those who haven’t experienced a cicada summer, if you look closely you will see hundreds of cicadas flitting around the trees.

Billie Joe Day for those who recognize it

I may have planted too many beans this year.

I still have some space left in my June watercolor portrait workshop here in Maryland: reg126.imperisoft.com/glenechopark... Yellow Barn Studio & Gallery Glen Echo, Maryland June 21-22, 2025

To which the judge should reply: Yes, and that’s why I asked it. Now, please, answer.

I scanned last might’s sketches so I’m reposting these cleaner versions. First, some flying squirrel studies for a guide for a local wildlife preserve.

Last sketch of the night. Prelim to a portrait, trying out a pose idea.

Trying to sketch with cats on my lap is a challenge. Here are some flying squirrel studies on cat-wrinkled paper.

Nebulous 2024 After a lifetime of not fitting in, I made my own space. It of course welcomes everyone else on the fringes. [ #Pride ]

If your business – restaurant/cafe/bar/music venue (especially), please include your location.

Logged into a job site and they want to confirm my id. 2 steps (possibly 3): 1. Upload govt id. 2. Submit selfie to confirm. If 1 & 2 are not enough they will run a background check. Mind you this not for a job hut just to search for possible jobs on the site. Ummm

And in classic AI fashion, it does a craptastic job. I was recently flagged because I was scanning too fast for it to see. Given I had to wait for the “put item in bag” to clear the screen between scans, whooboy, is that camera slow.

I came home tonight to my neighbors gathered around staring up a tree. I wandered over to find the big event was a snake up a tree. It was doing its best impression of a tree branch and wishing we’d all leave. So I confirmed it was not venomous and, greatly disappointed, the crowd dispersed.

One of the many, many things I miss after leaving DC is Vietnamese food. Today we found a great place and my pho needs were deliciously satisfied. Pho Saigon is great. And Purple Yum next door is amazing.

Saw this sign walking thru this garden and assumed the goose was ahead in the next yard. Little did I know it was hidden in plain sight.

The emergence of the cicadas means a feast for the birds so now our yard is littered with molted casings and wings. The birds are picky eaters and remove the wings before eating.

Movies that traumatized you as a child? There are a few but Old Yeller holds a special place. I was 4 or 5 years old when we went to see this Disney film. I did not make it to the end.

No photos please!

everyone's noting how racist this is but it's also worth noting Vance rose to fame by writing a book that shit all over this culture he supposedly wants to preserve

Saw Sinners again and it’s still fantastic. One of those films you can see again and again and notice something new each time.

To add to my earlier post, here a relatively freshly “hatched” cicada. When they first molt they are milky white. This one is already not fully white just a short time after molting. Also, here’s one getting ready to molt.

17-year cicadas have arrived in our yard. A couple of hundred in our little patch.
