Great news #Worcester, @midlandmencap.bsky.social is launching a new inclusive music project in the city. Starting on the 20th March and facilitated by a professional musician everyone is welcome to join the fun. Details below, you can also scan the barcode for more info and booking arrangements

On the day the last pints of Banks’s Mild are pulled in the Black Country this abomination. What has happened to us?

One for @mikeewins.bsky.social, the mighty Carlisle United rollin’ through the West Midlands on a Tuesday evening, where they’re off to🤷🏻‍♂️

My first Villa Park game was 57 years ago almost to the day. So many memories as we commemorated 150 years of @avfc-official.bsky.social tonight. Great to get the win and to be able to share an emotional night on The Holte with my sons and grandson. We did not choose, we were chosen #avfc

Living Well Consortium is recruiting for a VCFSE Partnership Manager to champion the influence of the VCFSE Sector across Birmingham and Solihull. The role is funded by the BSOL Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, and Autism Provider Collaborative urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=htt...

I suspect other factors are at play too, lack of access to meaningful and person centred social work, access to advocacy support, ad hoc eligibility decisions at funding panels and a a system that for most is confusing, impenetrable and consequently’impossible’ to navigate #socialcare

Why work in social care, even if you’re paid the real living wage of £12.60ph, most get minimum wage, jobs laden with regulation, responsibility & accountability when with no experience you can work in a supermarket warehouse and earn £16.48ph? Caring for people or caring for dried goods #socialcare

Nice one Wes Streeting, I’m here for this, I’d pay good money to watch the sour faced Cerberus that holds sway at our GP surgery go through training. There’s a fly on the wall in this for Channel4

This, the money is there, but the political will is sadly lacking. Remember the solution is always political and ideological #socialcare #socialcarecrisis

That grinding sound you hear is Sir Andrew Dilnot sharpening his stiletto for next Wednesday committees.parliament.uk/committee/81...

“Soon there will be nothing left to reform”. Why the care sector is impatient for the government’s new care commission to come up with answers, rather than just recap the same old problems. www.itv.com/news/2025-01...

The total intellectual vacuum amongst our politicians www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/01... Wes Streeting might manage to produce a social care plan by 2028. By then, Labour will be in its last inglorious days in office. How did people as incompetent as this ever reach high office in the UK?

It’s the BIG 40!! Yes, 2025 marks my fortieth year working in #socialcare, the vast majority in #Birmingham. I’ve added a few more thoughts and reminiscences in the pic below. If I was to write a book I don’t think many people would believe the story I could tell📖

Fantastic to welcome so many people to Midland Mencap’s community Christmas lunch. Great food, presents and 🥂So glad everyone had such a good time sharing Christmas Day together, well done to everyone involved 🎅🎄 #Birmingham #ChristmasDinner

A huge 👏👏to colleagues and fab volunteers for spending part of Christmas Day preparing our 5th community Xmas lunch. We’ve nearly 40 people coming who otherwise would have been alone today. And thanks to Northfield Community Partnership and Northfield NNS for their generous support 🍽️ #Birmingham

So the Government solution to the escalating social care crisis is setting out a plan on devising a plan to deliver a ten year plan. And the can gets another kick down the street(ing) #socialcare #socialcarecrisis #socialcareincrisis www.disabilitynewsservice.com/streeting-se...

Oh great, more research to tell us exactly what plenty of informed minds already know and could help deliver with their eyes shut 🙄

If you work with children and families in #Birmingham let them know about these FREE fun holiday events from Ways for Wellbeing CIC coming up during the festive period. All the details below #ChildrenandFamilies

Always boils my blood this one, we’d be naive to think they act altruistically. They have the cures and therapies and the means to transform millions of lives, but big biotec and Pharma just don’t want us to have them. They need to keep us sick

“That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas.” www.thirdsector.co.uk/mps-vote-aga...

Listened to your excellent show today @mrjamesob.bsky.social Gentle challenge to the concept of 'moving people INTO social care'. Social care is not a destination (even if the media see everything as care homes). Social care is help to live your life your way. It's all of us & our futures.

For those of us who have been around long enough to remember Blair’s toothless Compact then without urgent funds and meaningful and purposeful co-produced reform it will look just like Compact 2, covered in dust and quietly put out to grass. We need more than reports, documents and rhetoric.

What a magical morning at the Families Together at Christmas concert. Unbelievably we’re in our 10th year and what absolute privilege to be celebrating in the wonderful surrounds of Birmingham Symphony Hall. Wonderful performances and a really lovely Christmasy vibe #Birmingham

Access to quality housing is a critical indicator in wellbeing. Ensuring a safe, secure home is a central pillar of Midland Mencap's mission and vision. This is our latest bungalow refurbishment awaiting new tenants who will move in next week #Birmingham #LearningDisability

Today's speech by Keir Starmer will be a sobering reminder that the govt has 5 key 'missions' and #socialcare isn't one of them. But the missions can't be fully delivered without social care and ultimately the govt will have to grasp that. Quick thread. news.sky.com/story/sir-ke...

Shameful, and those who can affect change are well aware which makes it even worse. At a meeting yesterday a GP argued that applying a quality standard to annual health checks would mean GP’s not been able to undertake them. Like they’d put their flash cars in for half an MOT 🙄😳

“A royal commission would be one route out of the impasse. Unless he has identified another one, Wes Streeting should take it.” ⁦‪@guardian‬⁩ has this right. The government is in the woods on #socialcare so should get someone else to find a way out. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

If this is a serious venture then every penny recovered should be ringfenced for social care www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/covid-c...

Busy day, including doing a brilliant podcast with students from St Paul’s Academy, at the PURE Expo event at Villa Park with a wide range of speakers joining together to address issues of inequalities impacting employment opportunities in #Birmingham

Sunday morning timeline cleanser

Really looking forward to taking part in the PURE Expo. The PURE Project supports people with complex barriers towards education, training and employment. PURE partners, including Midland Mencap, have worked with more than 5,000 people across Birmingham to build confidence, develop new skills

This is the way forward, it still doesn’t mean the Bill should pass, or that we would ever have the right safeguards in place, or resolve the reality of coercion or bias, but at least we would be further forwarding on understanding principles of choice #AssistedDyingBill

Responding to questions in the House of Commons today, Lisa Nandy said the previous government “silenced and gagged” charities and said the Labour administration was “protecting our charities” I’d love a clear and straightforward answer as to how you’re doing that 😳 #Charities #ThirdSector

Ended the day at the footy. I’m a huge fan of TIFO displays, #AVFC’s last night was outstanding, took me back to watching Villa in the late 60’s & 70’s when this was such a recognisable image. The club should definitely use it more going forward, distinctly ours in a world full of rampant lions

Park that we were robbed by a dreadful refereeing decision and hold the thought we’re playing Champions League football. Another brilliant night at Villa Park #UTV
