The only opportunity to photograph the Eurasian Nuthatches Sitta europaea removing detritus from the potential nest-hole in a small London park in sunlight is shortly after sunrise, as the hole is shaded for most of the day. Fortunately, they obliged this morning!

A male Eurasian Wren Troglodytes troglodytes, captured in mid-air at the end of an enthusiastic and noisy song-and-dance display in a small London park this morning #birds. Intervals are left between bursts of song so that rivals can respond and be heard.

Male Eurasian Wrens Troglodytes troglodytes need to advertise their presence to females during the breeding season. They will construct multiple nests in the hope that their alluring displays and industry will prove to be successful #birds! Photographed in a small London park this morning.

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis alighted briefly on a sunlit branch of the frost-covered storm-felled tree in a small London park this morning #birds. Later on he reappeared with a female, and courtship behaviour was observed (off-camera).

This Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea was energetically disposing of the remnants of the nest of a previous occupant from a potential desirable residence in a small London park this morning #birds. Hopefully there will be baby Sittas soon - once a mud lining has been constructed!

One of a pair of Eurasian Nuthatches Sitta europaea excavating detritus from a previously used nest-hole in a London Plane Platanus x hispanica #birds. The hole (if used) will be lined with mud from the banks of a nearby stream to keep out intruders. Filmed this morning in a small London park.

'Kingfisher' is a series of new and original guitar improvisations, played on Fender Stratocaster and Precision Bass guitars, and recorded on a Boss RC-3 Loop Station pedal: youtu.be/ylAT_ONqZrQ?... via @YouTube.

I don't recall having seen Little Egret Egretta garzetta No. 1 growing head-plumes as the breeding season approached last year - this could be age-related as this bird is known to be more than 10 years old, having first been seen overwintering in a small London park in the autumn of 2014.

Little Egret Egretta garzetta No. 7 is starting to grow head-plumes as the breeding season approaches. The bill and legs will darken to a glossy black, the feet will turn orange, and the lores will become brighter, and more obviously contrasted against the bill. The aigrettes look wonderful!

Portrait of a European Robin Erithacus rubecula, taken in a small London nature reserve earlier today #birds.

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis was in the process of shaking himself, explaining the presence of some barely visible mid-air water-droplets above the stonework of the bridge in a small London park earlier today #birds.

Another portrait of the sunbathing Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen, one that I don't recall having encountered before, sunbathing in a small London nature park earlier today. A real beauty!

This gorgeous Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen was sunbathing in a small London nature reserve earlier today, apparently without a care in the world!

Mobile film of a very obliging European Robin Erithacus rubecula, preening in a small London nature park earlier today #birds.

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, just about to dive from a hover above the stream in a small London park on 17th February #birds. Underexposed as shot, so adjusted with Auto Smart Fix.

Portrait of the 2024A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen yawning from 18th February.

Agreed. Most dog-owners are also lovers of wildlife - unwittingly exacerbating this situation by allowing their flea-treated pets to enter the water. Many would be mortified if they realised that so much damage could be caused...

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, perching on a branch of the Storm Henk-felled tree in a small London park this morning. Perfect habitat for his species.

Gratifying to be able to post images of Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Grey Heron Ardea cinerea and Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis from this am, as they seem to have managed to avoid exposure to a significant diesel spillage that polluted an internationally important chalk river this week #birds.

My on-line photo gallery may be viewed here for anyone who would like to see it: www.avalon.red/editorial?bl.... Many new photographs have been added recently.

The 2023G Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen has delivered her litter since yesterday evening. She turned up when her son from last year, the 2024B dog fox, was already present, and he was very respectful towards her! Photo (of the new mum) from 11th February.

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, photographed in a small London park yesterday, just hours before an avoidable and catastrophic diesel oil spillage in a nearby river #birds. He was OK today, but it is impossible to predict what might happen to him in the coming days.

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, ending a hover following an aborted dive from a high branch in a small London park yesterday #birds. Sometimes a dive will be continued after a mid-air adjustment - provided a potential catch is still visible.

I can safely say that I have never seen a Carrion Crow Corvus corone adopting this position before #birds - scratching with one foot, whilst balancing on the muddy bank of a stream with the other, and supporting itself with a wing! Taken in a small London park earlier today.

The colours and texture of the Red Fox's winter coat have been beautifully captured by @acornmoonart.bsky.social in this painting!

A bitingly cold wind had deterred the male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis from fishing as actively as usual in a small London park yesterday #birds. He eventually sought out a well sheltered, low perch below this one - about 18 inches above the water's surface, and sat there for over 30 minutes.

The 2024A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen showing an interest in something higher up yesterday morning.

There is a strict hierarchy when it comes to fishing rights for Little Egrets Egretta garzetta #birds. Subordinate Egret No. 1 was sent packing from a perch on a small bridge by No. 7 in a small London park this morning, flying up to a tree not too far away (but out of No. 7's direct line of sight).

An important publication about pesticides - well worth reading, and circulating as widely as possible.

A male Common Blackbird Turdus merula, preening on one of the branches of the fallen tree in a gloomy small London park earlier today #birds. This habitat is fantastic for wildlife!

Mobile 'footage' of the male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis sitting on a low branch of the fallen tree in a small London park today - accompanied by the song of a nearby male Cetti's Warbler Cettia cetti #birds.
