WHOSE SUBSTANCE ARE YOU WEARING

I once predicted that, a century from now, people will look back and view the slogan "M*ke Am•rica Great Again" as the absolute epitome of irony. Currently revising said declaration by roughly 99 years, 11 months, 30 days and 22 hours.

I’m mainlining videos of old white people yelling at Republicans like it’s my job.

We live in the era of The End of an Era. But David Johansen's death is definitely that, in terms of NYC rock, culture, bonhomie, and bohemianism. Here's a gift link to a Johansen playlist I wrote for the Times: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/a...

Caught up with this when I wrote my book on the making of KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (which I believe you can find copies of on, er, eBay?) and it's astounding. Currently available to stream on the Criterion Channel. Check it out asap.

Throwing on GROSSE POINT BLANK right now… variety.com/2025/film/ne...

There are better (and far worse) Stephen King adaptations, but in terms of movies which draw inspiration from the Master of the Macabre, 'Final Destination' *and* Roadrunner cartoons, THE MONKEY marches to the beat of its own drum. It is, in a word, bananas. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

I’m hopefully preaching to the choir but it is maddening how normalised it has become to see people scrolling away on their phones in festival press screenings. Fully scrolling down Instagram, TikTok, Twitter… Tapping away relentlessly and acting aggressively when asked to put their phones away.

Go there faster.

Moderated a Q&A after a screening of SUNRISE tonight at the Paris, and a) the theater was packed on a snowy, slushy Sat, b) a third of the audience was seeing it for the first time and c) it played like gangbusters nearly a 100 years after it was made. Absolutely amazing experience.

Opening March 7th at Salem Cinema!

It's poetry, parody, niche-film-nerd trolling, a totally sincere valentine, a switch-up for a surrealist filmmaker and a lo-fidelity masterpiece. It's UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, and you must bow before its cockeyed Canadian glory. There will be Tim Hortons and turkeys. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

2025 is the year of people finding out after they fucked around.

All your theater kid friends are right: Slings and Arrows is a great show and America didn't deserve the charisma onslaught that is Paul Gross.

We came, we saw (nearly 40 films in all), we laughed, we cried — we trekked to Park City for one second-to-last time and made a big ol' pile of #Sundance. Our 10 best list, from early 20th century USA to NYC '74 (and two different docs that skewer true-crime TV). www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

You may wanna see COMPANION before reading this — spoilers are clearly identified as imminent before gracing your eyeballs — but I can say that this extremely clever mash-up makes a strong case for Horror Rom-Com as a sub-subgenre. Also Sophie Thatcher is dope. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

It's shot in academy ratio but it's such a gorgeous film, and one that needs a giant screen to truly weave the spell it's weaving — not to mention that the thought of this "small" film, i.e. it's not Red Notice, simply getting lost/buried in the algorithm is a tragedy.

Have seen some stuff at #Sundance but PETER HUJAR'S DAY has been the one to really stick with me. Simple recreation of a conversation between two creative types. Deceptively dense excavation of a lost boho moment that doubles as a funky time machine. Love it. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

Wow, you all really weren’t kidding about TRAIN DREAMS… beautiful enough to make you weep. It’s a keeper. #Sundance 📽️

A little bit of Bowie, a little bit of Kanye, a few spoonfuls of Manson (Charles, not Marilyn) — John Malkovich's Pop Superstar act is the best thing about OPUS and makes us wanna buy tickets to a Malkovich Eras tour. As for the rest of the film... #Sundance 📽️ www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

The fact that #Sundance premiered the two best narrative movies of the 2025 festival — SORRY, BABY and PETER HUJAR’S DAY — on the same day officially coronates Monday as Greatest Festival Day. 📽️

My #Sundance, in a nutshell

One of the best things I've seen at #Sundance this year: PREDATORS, which takes a cold, hard, critical look at 'To Catch a Predator' and the whole idea of Vigilante Justice TV as car-wreck entertainment. Some distributor needs to pick this up ASAP. 📽️ www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...
