The Nazis' first strategy for making Germany "Judenfrei" was to try and get Jews to self-deport.

1/3 I had a fabulous time at the Pacific APA. The Lebowitz Prize lectures by Kate Manne and myself were well-attended. We respectfully articulated our agreements and disagreements (our papers will be published in the APA journal).

I’ve been asked so many times these last few weeks, “Do you have a way out?”

As of this morning, we've tracked over 600 student visa revocations at more than 100 colleges. That's double yesterday morning's count. Send updates to me or @amowreader.com and follow @insidehighered.com interactive visa map here: www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

“We must be unafraid to be viewed as crazy, hyperbolic, over-the-top, and otherwise out there. Too many assessments of this moment still underestimate the danger. And far too many commentators spent the preceding years tut-tutting.” @aselrod.bsky.social with a reminder that we’re not the crazy ones

1/2 "When will we stop building monuments to the Dead and get busy re-humanizing the Living? When will we finally say NEVER AGAIN and truly mean it?"

Trying to teach a bunch of students that are utterly uninterested in what one has to teach is extraordinarily depressing. It's like doing stand-up comedy but nobody laughs.

This is fascinating. In 1941 a German textile archaeologist, Karl Schlabow working for a Nazi 'race science' organisation, removed a fragment of the Bayeux Tapestry. That fragment has now been found in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives, and will soon be repatriated to France.

He isn't a monster. He's a human, supported by our fellow humans--which is actually a bigger and more complicated problem

My high school teacher used to criticize the local TV weather forecast exclaiming, "All they had to do is look out the window!" This is what I'm inclined to say to those who insist that we have "guardrails" protecting American democracy: All you have to do is look out the window!

Since its release last year, I've been promoting the remarkable documentary film For the Living. One of the co-directors, is especially keen on screening it on college campuses, and has asked me to reach out to colleagues who might be interested. Please let me know. www.forthelivingmovie.com

If you have any curiosity about what we intended with FOR THE LIVING, The Denver Gazette's John Moore has a lot of great insight for you. FTL is about every single one of us. And it is about right now. Take a moment. Please give it a read. @davidlsmith.bsky.social

Fellow academics. Does your college/university require you to specify scholarship, service, and teaching goals for the upcoming year in your annual review, and then evaluate your performance with respect to them? I'm interested to hear your responses.
