When a developer proposes a housing project, they are acting as a middleman for people who want a new home. The developer is a messenger telling us that housing demand exists. If we shoot the messenger (block the project), that demand doesn't disappear; it moves elsewhere.

New paper on Auckland finds that city's upzoning produced a big increase in government-supported housing development; this increase was actually larger than that of market-rate development. Lends credence to the argument that zoning reform is a complement to public housing development strategies.

I like paying taxes. Genuinely. Not grudgingly. I can’t pave a road, I can’t build and staff a hospital. $200 in my pocket won’t pay for my kid’s daycare but if we all pool our money it might. I really wish someone on the left would be brave enough to be like, “Taxes are good, actually.”
