Reading Reinhold Niebuhr again is illuminating in these times. For example, from The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness (1944), p. 185: “If America achieves maturity, the primary mark of it must be the willingness to assume continuing responsibility in the world community of nations.”

The #4Nations Face-Off hockey experience has been amazing. Let’s expand it next year to include Czechia and Slovakia!

Disruptive shifts in tech & warfare threaten European security - but also offer us the chance to invert our military disadvantage against Russia. We need a strategy to seize the opportunities, mitigate the threats & address our defence industrial issues. @DSI_Strategy is on it.

Important new report from the excellent @maxbergmann.bsky.social @erep.csis.org, including: “Each of the policy areas examined in this report could become a major source of tension. They each could spiral out of control and cause deep, perhaps irrevocable risks.” www.csis.org/analysis/tra...

The 1938 Munich Crisis and the 1945 appeasement of Stalin over the fate of Poland are warnings of the psychological traps awaiting democratic leaders when attempting to negotiate with a dictator. Brilliant essay by Keith Lowe at @engelsbergideas.bsky.social: engelsbergideas.com/notebook/def...

Scholz, at #MSC2025 said that Germany cannot spend more on defence by cutting in other areas as the citizens would be against it. @ecfr.eu actually asked exactly that question, and 40% of Germans (against 36%) say they would want more money for defence even if it meant cutting spending elsewhere.

Presidents need to be challenged—but sycophants and staffers are unlikely to do so. Overruling any counsel they offer is easy; the president pays no political price for it because they have no power bases to call on, as @kschake.bsky.social and I point out here: engelsbergideas.com/notebook/a-t...

The Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson announced today their biggest military aid package to Ukraine for ~$1,2 billion, of which nearly $90 million will be allocated towards production of Ukrainian long-range missiles and drones. Long live Sweden! A friend in need is a friend indeed.

This chart from the @economist.com on solar is just astonishing. We are terrible at predicting the energy future. It is also part of the reason I'm optimistic about Europe's economic future. It has the tools (batteries/renewable) to rapidly lower energy costs. www.economist.com/interactive/...

One more time: The intentionality of the cable damage incidents does not really matter ! What matters is that 1) Russia is using the shadow fleet to circumvent sanctions 2) the shadow fleet poses environmental, navigational and infrastructure hazards

Welcomed #CBSSwisepersons @ilvestoomas.bsky.social & @glandsbergis.bsky.social in #Tallinn today. A close & broad cooperation with like-minded countries in the #BalticSea is becoming highly important. During Estonia´s #CBSS Presidency we'll focus on changing the security environment of the region.

Presidents need to be challenged—yet a top team composed entirely, or almost entirely, of staffers is the least likely to perform this function. Overruling their counsel is all too easy. Here, @kschake.bsky.social and I offer our thoughts on the phenomenon: engelsbergideas.com/notebook/a-t...
