I had no idea this would resonate so much. So many incredible comments. The good news is that it's not too late to grow. Grateful. open.substack.com/pub/dvdmorri...

Authors and creators, this is one of the best articles you’re going to read today on reaching your audience. It’s a fun read too, especially if you know about ZZ Top. Those guys were so nerdy in their early days. “Would you write for just one reader?” open.substack.com/pub/danblank...

It really is revolutionary that Bookshop.org is offering ebooks. Profit from the sale goes to independent bookstores, even one you specify, like one in your own community or even perhaps a Black or queer owned store.

The thing I love most about Rage Against the Machine is how relevant their music is. But the thing I hate most about Rage Against the Machine is how relevant their music is.

Please Southern Baptists, one way or another, show your disapproval with this lack of courage and leadership among your leaders.

As early as five or six, evangelicals initiate their young. Often well before our teenage years, we precociously repeat the language of testimony. We experience a powerful sense of ourselves. Make no mistake, there is little room for adolescence in this scenario. open.substack.com/pub/dvdmorri...

“I cannot try to appraise the quantity of emotional disturbance in this country.” Erik Erikson said this in 1950. I’m quoting it out of context. But truer words.

Did anyone else hear “the yoke of woke” and censorship has lifted by NewsCorp CEO last week?

Authors, get past any cynicism and overwhelm and instead assign great value to your wonderful online community. Major book publishers are already relying on your online community, and not nearly as much on their ability to land media for you. You have more power than they do to find your audience.

The more you do this, the harder we will work. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Truly amazing how “anti-semitism” has been co-opted by a movement where its billionaire leader offers a fascist salute.

Donald and gang, you’re just going to make us work harder at getting books like this read by more people. Read Intersexion and we’ve got Nia Chiaramonte publishing in July. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

I know this is obvious to some of you, but big time toxic capitalism is alive and well in the media business. Please do support grassroots authors, indie publishers and bookstores. You'll feel great about it.

“. . . it is unadulterated disaster capitalism, or just a modern coup, through the very sneaky means of: business as f*cking usual.” @lennyaduncan.bsky.social Good thoughts too about our relationship to the media right now, and what we can do in our own lives. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Each day is worse than the day before. Don’t look away because it gets hard. Don’t normalize this behavior. Don’t pick your battles. Fight every single one of them. 2 weeks and we’re exhausted. It’s just beginning

So glad about this.

We’ve always been a country with demons. Evangelicals, for example, have always had them too, tho some think the demons are recent. But now they’ve put the demons plain as day in the center seats of power. Nothing new. Nothing we can’t resist, tho who knows how costly or difficult.

I looked at the stars this morning once again realizing they are suns just like ours with planets and some in this vast universe with sentient beings who have never heard of evangelicals.

Heard in our house, “Go Quakers!” www.reuters.com/legal/quaker...

People deconstructing are often accused of “throwing the baby out with the bath water.” But if we’re taking about the features of evangelcal style religion, which infantalizes spirituality, then maybe the baby indeed needs to be thrown out as well.

“The world has lost a musical library.” open.substack.com/pub/weirdcat...

True. It has been quite the learning curve for me (and a joy!) to watch my first book (Red State Christians) continue to sell strongly for nearly 6 years + counting! Goal is not just a strong start but a long tail.

Author’s, you’d be surprised how many books you can sell and not make a bestseller list. Nothing wrong with those lists per se, but there are plenty of other meatier goals to chase as you learn about publishing, community building being one example.

This feels like the time-lapse image of a planet being taken over by the Borg in Star Trek, but this is no TV show. www.mlive.com/news/grand-r...

Making American great won’t happen by conceding world health to China. Specific and helpful quick read here. open.substack.com/pub/yourloca...

This is one of those things in book publishing that you really love making happen.

This is a very intriguing read. For me, raised as a Southern Baptist, it resonates. I am an outlier in my family, educated, liberal and professionally successful. My family fits the profile of Christian Nationalist to a tee. The reason as to “why” is thoughtfully examined by David Morris.

“So, the apparent message is that millions of people don’t really consider sexual abuse to be a big deal – at least not big enough to matter more than the cost of eggs.”

“[Uhura] is not a Black role. And it’s not a female role.” -MLK www.msn.com/en-us/news/o...

Why are Christian nationalists unbendingly in support of such an un-Christian politics? Because they are psychologically split in two by the bargains of our born-again backgrounds. dvdmorris.substack.com/p/beyond-the...

😂😂😂

"Why, for the third time in over eight long years, do evangelical or “born again” Christians still overwhelmingly support a venal, lascivious, and mendacious political leader?" See dvdmorris.substack.com and subscribe if you like, as there is more coming.

The Christian echo chamber machine in the U.S. is far bigger and more unending than you can possibly imagine. Stop it, run away, do something else. The latest is a new book by a pastor hoping to re-establish Christian credibility through reinforcing the Nicene Creed. Nope.

As an evangelical I was taught to fear the world growing up. But the world is an infinitely fascinating place. So many interesting things to inspire you. I’m still realizing this as much as ever.

Coming later this year. If you want some of the most thoughtful insights into purity culture and the culture that perpetuates it, here it is from Sarah Moslener.

Saw A Complete Unknown last night with the fam. Definitely recommend. It captures a moment in time. Loved the way it portrays his relationships with Guthrie, Baez, Cash, and I didn’t know how close he was to Pete Seeger, so well portrayed by Edward Norton.

For those interested in the book business, this video is nicely revealing about how distrubution has changed. Main takeaway is that a community bookstore and brand mindset is what’s working. Also, that stat that Amazon is only 50% of the market isnt true for new authors youtu.be/Z9kOIcNUMnQ?...

Well deserved. Such an original and ongoing contribution. Indeed follow @rlstollar.bsky.social in 2025. Glad that @rns.org thought to do this and include him.

Evangelicals are so obsessed and overfamiliar with the Bible and listen to what thier echo culture says that they have little eyesight left to see it for what it is and no more. When Rupert Murdoch became the biggest Bible publisher in the world, that’s what you get.

Evangelical apologetics are such a bore and to what grasping end? I’d rather hear stories or read history or learn a language.

Definitely a must-read from Chrissy Stroop @www.bugbeardispatch.com Also, those stats about people being estranged from family members are something.
