It’s not too late to improve the situation until we’re all dead. This is another of my own key takeaways from reading a lot of history.

👏👏👏

Since announcing this, tiktok went down, came back, & blasted Trump propaganda 2x. The internet will be an even tougher place for science. I have enough to fund ~5 of these projects. More than 5 should be funded. They're going to be v important. Help us fund more if you can. givebutter.com/29Ow9Y

One of the best books I read last year, and I almost didn’t read it. I mistakenly thought reading about the struggle of the black working class against white supremacy in our country would sadden me even more after the election. Instead it gave me much needed perspective, learning, and hope.

I will be reading this again and again in the days ahead and taking the wisdom in it to heart and to action, even if my actions feel small and inconsequential in the face of it all.

I just found my 2025 motto: Joy & spite, y’all.

I am extremely excited to announce that for the first time ever, Skype a Scientist is offering mini-grants to support IRL science communication!! Communicating science out in our communities is critical. We want to enable others to get their projects off the ground! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

I hardly use them these days but I love working in colour pencils. Let’s hope 2025 gives me the chance to use them some more.

Absolutely delightful Roman lamps from @pottedhistory.bsky.social and @potsofhistory.bsky.social. Just the thing to bring joy and warm light on a dark, rainy winter night. I love them!

Day 24 #ArtAdventCalendar I painted a bookmark today for my husband. Watercolor on paper, 2024 Thank all of you for the art and inspiration the last 24 days. I am looking forward to sharing and seeing more art throughout 2025!

Day 18 #ArtAdventCalendar Stellar’s Jay, colored pencil and watercolor in paper, 2016 Stellar’s jays are one of my favorite birds. I love them and their sassy attitudes and how often they have fooled me with their mimicry of red-tailed hawks.

Happy #ArtAdventCalendar day 18. What is art if it has no sense of humor? Today, I present to you one of my masterpieces: Bigfoot Eating Popcorn. Feel free to download and use when needed. I added it to Tenor!Happy holidays.

Day 17 #ArtAdventCalendar Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. Oil on stretched canvas, 2015.

#artAdventCalendar day 16 should evidently be a shot of my dinner since that’s doing numbers… 🤣 Instead, have this lovely little western bluebird. Digital gouache and ink in @procreate.com 🪶 #bird

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 16 Wilket Creek, Toronto. 36 x36

I have lately got back to that glorious society called solitude. Henry David Thoreau After Christmas, with luck, this little boy will begin the process of getting to know my donkeys. With a view, in the fullness of time, to coming to live with us. I can't wait.

Some embellishment of a badger print yesterday. And some extra white too ❤️

A Stonechat taken at Keyhaven Marshes, Hampshire. They have to be the most photographed birds out there, tbf they are very obliging models. They always remind me of a folklore story of them being the Devil's bird. #ArtAdventCalendar #britishbirds #Birds #HantsBirder

Last year I embraced my passion for #MealPlanning to write the book "Questioning Meal Planning, 100 questions, and zero recipes to help with 365 days of 'What's for dinner?' " For today's #ArtAdventCalendar small watercolors in my #sketchbook showing some meals ideas from Fall 2023 #art

#ArtAdventCalendar Kitchen backsplash made with #seaglass found on the beach. Wood and backerboard salvaged from a construction site dumpster. #reuse #recycle #buynothing #beachcombing

#ArtAdventCalendar day 14. My son was fishing on the Big Thompson river, so I busted out the paints. It was completely overcast, and like being in a softbox. This is a small sketch, low dynamic range, just to play with shapes. I need to figure out if there is something here. #pleinair #landscape

Day 13 #ArtAdventCalendar Elephant Seal at San Simeon, California. Pencil on paper, 2022 I was watching the elephant seals near San Simeon and grabbed my sketchbook to practice. So many elephant seals lounging around—and the smell! Unforgettable.

Day 12 #ArtAdventCalendar MacKerricher State Park, Fort Bragg, California. Derwent Inktense pencils on paper, 2021

Day 11 #ArtAdventCalendar Utah autumn triptych. Oils on canvas circa 2014. Something I painted to hang on my walls. I love aspens and oaks.

Day 10 #ArtAdventCalendar Totality of 2017 solar eclipse as viewed from the John Day River where I was camping. I painted this on a rock from the river in watercolor and gouache. Seeing the total eclipse was unexpectedly moving and so amazingly beautiful.

Day 9 #ArtAdventCalendar Foothill yellow-legged frog. Watercolor on paper, 2016 I painted this from a photo I took on the Middle Fork Feather River on the Plumas National Forest, California.

Hoping if any journalists are doing end-of-year Top 10 Lists of Bluesky Feeds, they’ll consider the SciArt Feed 🐡. One of the oldest Feeds on Bluesky: a curated list of contributors to keep AI out; and now over 2,100 Likes.

Day 8 #ArtAdventCalendar A necklace I made with three pyrite ammonite fossils that I found on a visit to Lyme Regis in Dorset. I often wear this when I need to remind myself to take a long view of the current situation, because the fossils remind me of geologic time.

It’s a REALLY GREAT time to pre-order this book! The author is going through a rough spot so buying his new book really helps! www.harpercollins.com/products/oat...

Day 7 #ArtAdventCalendar California poppies closed on a rainy day. An entry from my journal, March 24, 2020. Watercolor on paper. It was early in the pandemic, and I was trying to establish a nature journaling practice to help my mental health (I am still working on establishing that practice).

What I didn't know was that it would only take 6 days to reach 1000 (1003 as of 9pm today...day 6) We're now 230 participants over the best year since 2015 which was 2022. Turns out when platforms don't limit what people see and post, magic happens #ArtAdventCalendar cc @jay.bsky.team

2024 #ArtAdventCalendar post for the 6th. "Mountain Meadow" watercolor done from online lesson with @thiswritingdesk on YouTube.

For your situational awareness, every $1 spent on NOAA yields $9 in benefit to the US economy.

Day 6 #ArtAdventCalendar A pair of rainbow trout painted in acrylics on Chucks. I love using Converse as a canvas, and have done several pairs with different subjects for friends and family.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 6 - Black Creek, Murphy's Point Provincial Park. 36 x 48

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 6 “Mates” 24 x 36 oil on canvas 2024 #landscapepainting #oilpainting #canadianart #art #geese

Day 5 #ArtAdventCalendar Something different for me—a pour painting octopus. Acrylic on canvas board, 2022. I tried pour painting with acrylics and the results of three of the paintings reminded me of octopi, so I painted an octopus into each of them. This is the second of the series.
