Who's going to ISOJ in Austin this year? I'll be there with 4 of our 2025 fellows @jskstanford.bsky.social and more JSK alumni. Look forward to talking with you about JSK's role in supporting press freedom and reimagining journalism in this era of chaos & transformation. isoj.org/symposia/2025/

The freeze on federal USDA grants — money already promised — is causing pain & uncertainty among America’s farmers.

Indeed! Good way to start the weekend.

If you're trying to figure out what to do right now, my advice is to just pick a thing that you think might be useful in some way, however small, and do it. Doing a thing leads you to doing another, bigger thing, and prepares you for that next thing.

We should do a lot more of this, for as long as it takes. open.substack.com/pub/oldgoats...

Starter pack: Home-grown Granny Smith apples. Add in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter + love = Thanksgiving pie!

You can go home again! Two @jskstanford.bsky.social alumni visited JSK Fellowships HQ last week, the 1st time since their fellowships: Wanja Njunga, 2003, from Kenya & Jeffrey Simpson, 1993, from Canada. JSK changed the trajectory of their lives & work, giving them confidence, & new ideas to pursue.

This doesn’t look good.

Capturing and savoring a moment of beauty in my day... (walking to my office at the @jskstanford.bsky.social in the early morning light.) Finding ways to seek grounding and strength as we head into uncertain times ahead...photography is helping me.

And sharing your beautiful woodwork was an inspiring open to today’s @jskstanford.bsky.social cohort session, @ryanpitts.bsky.social Stretching yourself to try creative things you’ve never done — while you work to reimagine journalism — is a great idea. We won’t get there with the status quo.

The first major atmospheric river storm to hit the West Coast this season is kicking off the rainy season with a bang. "That’s going to be quite a lot of water." @weatherwest.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

Hooray, Jen Larino, @jskstanford.bsky.social fellowships alum, for saying out loud what we all know to be true: Journalism pushes people to overexert and overgive. That can only be sustainable for a time. What actually makes sense?

🚀 Episode 48 of @lnmpod.com with Jennifer Larino is out. The ED & Co-Founder of Lede New Orleans talks with host @timreganporter.lnmpod.com about how her organization is reshaping local journalism by training young BIPOC storytellers to address community information needs.

Yes!! So glad there's a smart space to have thoughtful conversations again with lots of people I know & missed -- and others I hadn't known existed, but are stunningly brilliant.

One of the Top 20 Podcasts of 2024? Bravo, @tonyamosley.bsky.social!

There's a terrific group of innovative, creative and kind people reimagining journalism in this JSK Fellows Starter Pack, created by JSK alum @dansinker.com. (Thanks, Dan!) Follow them on Bluesky!

Breathe -- in these challenging times -- and prep to do great journalism. Smart take by @jskstanford.bsky.social fellowship alum @aglantz.bsky.social "In the next four years, we must hold President Trump accountable, but we must also focus on issues that matter to our audiences." Thank you, Aaron.

The next chapter of journalism demands more than reactive reporting. JSK alum @aglantz.bsky.social highlights how journalists can reshape the narrative by digging deeper into the issues that affect communities.

Ah, the missing gender lens! Thanks for pointing that out & the conflicting findings, @bobsutton.bsky.social. My friend & speaker & humorist Kathy Klotz-Guest, wrote in reply to you on a diff platform: "I think Guy Kawasaki said 'the higher you go in an organization, the thinner the air.' lol"

Such a fun read -- especially for anyone (like me) who worked in that historic SF Chronicle building. It includes photos of newspaper life in the 1920s, with fire poles to a sub-basement printing press, info transmitted by pneumatic tubes "and a clock tower with a view of San Francisco’s future."

Our mate Paul Bronks has entered the chat (with his menagerie). Things are looking up.

Tip for folks just breaking the Twitter habit: the best thing you can do is replace the app’s spot on your phone. Muscle memory is a hell of a thing, work with it not against it.

Donald Trump campaigned hard demonizing immigrants, a strategy that helped catapult him into the White House in a U.S. election unlike any other. Now, the nation’s history of deportation and its consequences merit the closest scrutiny.

Don't miss this opportunity! Your future self will thank you for taking the time to apply for a John S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford. In these uncertain times, we have built a support network that lasts. For application tips, a great FAQ & more, please go to jsk.stanford.edu/become-a-fel...

First Bluesky post: Journalism fellowships rock! Visiting Lynette Clemetson, my counterpart at Knight-Wallace Fellowships in Michigan. Now, more than ever, we need to champion press freedom, emerging J leaders & journalism that holds power to account. Applications are open! @jskstanford.bsky.social
