On my way to Marseille to spend a week building projection setups. There will also be wine. Plenty of wine.

Good morning comrades!

Here's my thoughts on the #technicolor debacle - open.substack.com/pub/danbartl... Calm and erudite, without a hint of rage.

A brief note (more a reflection) over on Substack regarding the barrage of chaos enacted by recent Executive Orders - danbartlettedtech.substack.com/p/chaos-para...

Based Hellboy.

Absolute drivel from people who haven't the faintest clue what they're talking about. OK, cut all senior university salaries by 50%. Won't make the slightest bit of difference. Most of them'll still crumple - because of the Telegraph's mates and recommendations. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02...

How I think I look when teaching / how I actually look

We’ve seen lots of bad decisions across the entire political spectrum in recent months. However, giving Musk “top secret security clearance” is far and away the WORST decision anyone has made. The US government is getting looted by this guy. Literal daylight robbery.

Elon Musk is serving as a ‘special government employee,’ the White House says

1. Makes outlandish threat about mad tariffs. 2. Neighbours call his bluff. 3. Bluffs harder & spooks global markets. 4. Backs down AND agrees to tighter gun control measures! You couldn't make it up. Thoughts @mrjamesob.bsky.social ?

Sometimes you have to just sit on the sofa at midnight in the pitch black, put your headphones on, and listen to Stevie Nicks at high volume. It does nothing to fix the descent into chaos we're all seeing, but it does sooth the soul.

The Lord gave us one Stuart H.M. Hall decades ago to teach us that we must talk about class and race together. I understand that Dem thought-leaders can't/don't read, but still, let's not embarrass ourselves here.

Glad to see that the US ran out patience for this absolute clown even faster than us Brits did. What an absolute cretin - www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Anyone else read this and just momentarily feel a sense of relief? www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

Sharing this again because, in my experience of being a union branch leader during a massive, year-long onslaught of redundancy consultations, no one ever brought up the problem of the cost allocation death spiral. I wish I'd had this information in my arsenal. www.linkedin.com/pulse/cost-a...

www.theguardian.com/business/202... Luton. It’s called Luton, Rachel. Have they actually looked at Silicon Valley? It’s pretty chaotic. It’s the darkest elements of rampant capitalist predation, and let’s not forget the immense damage caused to already vulnerable communities.

While King Arthur, his knights of the round table, and his mage Merlin are mostly thought of as mythical, there’s evidence that history became myth over time | Robert Rowlands

Academics: if you know, you know

Tomorrow I’ll very probably be printing out copies of my kids immigration paperwork and placing it in their school bags. Just in case. It’s unfathomable that this is a cruelty that people chose. It’s wilful.

My American friends, you need to understand that this is not hyperbole or theatrics, this is 100% how it would play out.

Snow in Savannah, Georgia this past 24hrs. The highlight was the genuine sense of wonder from so many in our community. Some kids experiencing snow for the first time ever. It was a little bit magical. Also, terrible terrible drivers. Just the absolute worst.

Timeline cleanse. If you want to see great animation design from a community of awesome creators, just go here - bsky.app/profile/did:...

… just in case it comes up in conversation.

Yesterday was a real litmus test. Look after each other. Check in on your neighbours and your community. Oh, and make sure to keep a mental note of anyone willing to dismiss a blatant Nazi salute. Accepting fascism happens in waves, so it’s good know whose likely to come to heel next.

Sharing again for posterity. Despite being just 72hrs old a lot of what I wrote here feels a little moot. Who could have predicted that Elon Musk would call for a new Reich before the deregulation could even begin?!? Not me! danbartlettedtech.substack.com/p/2025-the-y...

Missing Jane Godley today.

Just in time for inauguration day, here’s a short piece about AI, Oligarchs, copyright legislation and Tiger King. Yes, really. open.substack.com/pub/danbartl...

To sooth the soul I shall tonight begin a Stephen King movie marathon, starting with Pet Cemetery. Obvs will end with IT part 2, but it’ll be getting wild and weird in between.

Tobias is out here spitting facts! Controversial opinion: the next season of Only Murders in the Building should feature Kermit. No explanation, no jokes. Kermit played 100% straight.

Amazing start for the Rams tonight! Don’t break our hearts Sean, please!

It's easy to trash-talk a national strategy like this, and yes, there's PLENTY of ways that it can go catastrophically wrong. But within this plan there is a opportunity for the UK to actually lead at global level on AI policy, wrangle the maniacal tech-bros and actually improve lives.

“I suppose it is the best thing I have done” — John Singer Sargent, who was born on this date in 1856, on his portrait of socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau. Named “Madame X”, the portrait caused a scandal because of the subject’s suggestive pose and revealing dress.

There’s an absolute deluge of misinformation about the California wild fires circulating right now - mostly proliferated by the usual far-right shills. Here’s some facts about what’s really going on - gavinnewsom.com/california-f... Newsom isn’t playing around.
