Great job by @dcattorneygeneral.bsky.social to put the STEER Act into action! The first set of dangerous drivers being taken to court today. 3 drivers racked up $90K+ in speeding tickets, put DC residents at risk, and in one case hit a child in a crosswalk! Now, they will face new accountability.

NEW: We are suing three Maryland drivers who racked up more than $90,000 in fines for dangerous driving violations in DC. These are the first lawsuits brought under the STEER Act. This new civil authority empowers OAG to make our roads safer by holding dangerous drivers from any state accountable.

10-year-old Yafet Solomon and Fitsum Kebede were killed in the tragic 2018 Kennedy Street fire. Alongside the US Attorney's Office for DC, we prosecuted the property owner for shocking housing code violations that trapped Yafet and Fitsum inside as the fire broke out. Today, he was found guilty.

NEW: We are suing Talea Ristorante and its owner for ruthlessly exploiting their workers. They steal workers' wages, deny them overtime and paid sick leave, and harass, intimidate, and fire workers who speak out. OAG will always protect DC workers and ensure all businesses play by the same rules.

We will defend the rule of law, DC Home Rule, and the right to govern ourselves.

DC is preparing for more snow and cold weather. Our Consumer Protection team is prioritizing calls from renters whose heat is out or not reaching 68°F. Please call 202-442-9828 and leave a message for assistance.

Amazon will pay $4 million to settle driver tip theft lawsuit - https://www.theverge.com/news/608182/amazon-flex-dc-worker-tip-lawsuit-settlement

NEW: Amazon will pay $3.95 million to resolve allegations that it stole tips meant for Amazon Flex delivery drivers in DC. When corporations break the law to profit, they should pay far more in the long run than what they gained through their illegal conduct. Worker tips belong to workers.

JUST IN: In 2021, revelations about sexual misconduct and racism roiled the NWSL and sparked investigations. Now, the women's soccer league will set aside $5 million for victims and implement other reforms.

DC is the #DistrictOfChampions. For sports to keep thriving here, players need to be safe from abuse and sexual harassment. That is what we fought to do in this landmark settlement. And none of it would have happened if players did not courageously speak out about the abuse they were experiencing.

The NWSL has agreed to create a $5 million compensation fund for players who suffered abuse in the league, as part of a a settlement with the Attorneys General of D.C., NY and Illinois. Plus, more on policy and oversight. All the details here: www.nytimes.com/athletic/611...

NEW: We reached a historic settlement with the National Women's Soccer League. After serious abuse allegations, NWSL will pay $5 million to impacted players and adopt league-wide safety policies. These enforceable policies will shield players and help women's soccer keep thriving in DC and the US.

NEW: A judge just issued an order fining Empower $25,000 per day until it complies with District law protecting customer safety. Any ridesharing business operating in DC must take basic steps to ensure riders' safety and play by the same rules as everyone else. No company is above the law.

Joining our community at Westminster was the perfect start to Black History Month. We honor all those who carried the mantle and recognize the enormity of the work we still have to do. Thank you for the opportunity to speak and to hear from inspiring leaders like Dr. Frank Smith and Chuck Hicks.

Petra's unlawful conduct exploits programs meant to house vulnerable DC residents and distorts a housing market that already puts rents out of reach for too many DC residents. We are suing to hold them accountable. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Powerful kick-off to #BlackHistoryMonth at Westminster. Proud to join @chmnmendelson.bsky.social, @robertwhitedc.bsky.social, @dcattorneygeneral.bsky.social, & leaders like Frank Smith & Chuck Hicks. After a week of baseless attacks on the national stage, local voices were strong, clear, and loud.

DC pays outlandishly high rates to landlords who rent to tenants with housing vouchers. AG Brian Schwalb says in a new lawsuit that Petra Management is gaming the system, skirting rent control rules to win big payouts/discriminating against other tenants: washingtoncitypaper.com/article/7573...
