This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

Reminder: Anyone who enabled Trump's lies about his ties to Putin should take that shame to their grave

Trump is a Russian stooge. Putin may as well written this himself. And any Republican in Congress who said they support our allies before, but are silent today over this, are worthless.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

I think most people are intuitively aware of this but something like the official White House account posting an “ASMR” video of shackled immigrants is not just cruel for its own sake, it’s intentional envelope-pushing to ramp up to desensitization over inhumane detention, camps, and deaths

Why do we need all that to surrender Ukraine on their behalf?

A good moment to remember the Russia thing was always real. Trump's goal is to help Russia and Putin, always has been. He's trying to throw our democratic allies under the bus and America as well. Again, the Russia thing was always real.

It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out. They gut the FAA. Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted. Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

I'm probably pissing in the wind, but I have little time off because of the holiday, so I'd like to offer a thread arguing against an ugly, ugly habit rising on Bluesky: Screenshots of articles without links. Stop it. Just fucking stop it.

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

The Democratic party is laying low because they believe backlash to Trump is inevitable and they're going to win midterms and 2028 no problem. I promise you this is what they believe. And they are so wrong. 1/2

Thisis what an authoritarian regime does to make sure NO ONE opens any investigations it would not like to see opened. Justice is being weaponized AND corrupted in plain sight.

And to expand on "politicizing core functions," I'd say a driving force is nothing other than punishing their perceived enemies in exact ways the Constitution intended to prevent and rewarding the corruption of their allies.

Not "all white people" are wrong. But when it comes to race, the majority of white Americans have been on the wrong side of every single racial issue in the 248-year history of this country. So why would anyone even care what they think about Black art?

MN is proud to help feed the world (in fact, this program was created by Hubert Humphrey). Now not only is that in jeopardy, but millions of dollars in income for farmers is too? Disgusting. This food, which we’ve already paid for, is waiting on ships to be delivered to those who need it.

@sulliview.bsky.social on why Dems should deny Trump and the GOP any votes for anything until Elon Musk's illegal mission is ended: "One thing is certain: if the public believes there is no determination to fight back, Trump’s destruction will continue unabated." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The question @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social and the rest of the Dem leadership need to answer is this: What's even the point of voting for a spending deal if Elon Musk and his platoon of Nick Fuentes wannabes are going to make the actual spending decisions?

It was a good theory: That calling Elon "President Musk" would get under Trump's famously thin skin, causing division. But it's not working. I have a theory why — and it helps explain why Republicans in Congress are okay with giving up power, too. www.salon.com/2025/02/07/w...

Any four Republican Senators could stop this at any time simply by threatening to block all action (or even caucus with the Democrats) if Trump doesn't make certain concessions. They won't, but that should be a much bigger story than whether the Democrats are doing everything that *they* can.

They'll defy the courts but even if not, are we going to run the entire government off district court injunctions for the next four years? This is a constitutional crisis beyond what the courts can structurally handle even if they were performing at their ideal best.

@claycane.bsky.social there is a flag with 9 stars on .gov sites, but it is not the confederate 9-star flag. That flag has the 9 stars arranged in a circle and only 3 stripes (2 red, 1 white). The flag on .gov sites has the normal number of stripes. Also, appears to have been there since 2024.

Musk's assault on USAID -- which has been one of most important tools of U.S. foreign policy (in addition to saving countless lives) since JFK -- is also being openly cheered on by the Putin regime.

Yes, beyond everything that is happening. The attack on the American republic, the coming economic carnage, this is a day of great, great shame that we have targeted and attacked our dearest friends and partners.

My mentions are filled with people insisting Senate Democrats are powerless. They’re not. They can throw up roadblocks by denying unanimous consent, forcing quorum calls, using holds and filibusters, etc It’s so easy to figure out even a dimwit like Tuberville managed to pull it off.

So much of this cultural shift discourse reminds me of the propaganda campaign against opponents of the Iraq War

"DOGE does not have power over established government agencies, and Musk has no role in government. It does not matter that he is an ally of the President. Musk is a private citizen taking control of established government offices. That is not efficiency; that is a coup."

Biggest takeaway from Trump's press conference after plane crash was that he was not concerned with people who died nor their families. He was concerned with only one person: Himself. That is why he blamed Obama, Biden, Pete Buttigieg and diversity programs. His ONLY concern was not being blamed.

The Trump administration is mounting a full-on assault against disabled children and it’s not even subtle.

The year I turned ten, my mother and stepfather joined Amway. Our lives spiraled into unreality, and we lost everything. I never got my mother back. Our experience prefigured the Trump era, with characters from my childhood later showing up in the White House. My story for the @theatlantic.com.

I rebuke and condemn the monstrous and grotesque racism expressed by Trump & others in their ignorant and crass assignation of blame for this tragedy, which is an affront to Kiah Huggins’ life’s work. Signing off for the night.

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

Importantly it found just 10% of trans youth in the study had actually been allowed to access hormones, so all the terrible things you've heard about trans youth in the UK is under a system *that isn't giving them health care*

Infectious Disease doc here 🙋🏻‍♂️. The only reason to give less vaccine to Black people is if you don’t want them to be protected. This is straight up medical racism. #DoNotConfirmRFKJr

“it’s probably a black person’s fault this bad thing happened” as a reflexive explanation is just a racist statement, there’s not a level of substantiation that makes it not racist bsky.app/profile/pgou...

This is what supporters of charter schools and vouchers don't tell you: because those schools aren't required to admit physically or learning disabled students, or ESL students, their "improved test scores" and whatnot are completely juiced—and it defunds the schools where disabled kids DO go.

Democrats have the ability to use Trump's power grab to make government visible. They need to be very specific, they need to show that Trump is stealing appropriated funds from Red States as much as Blue, and they need to explain why this is illegal. Then do cheap ads targeting GOPers.

The annoying noise the Dems want to tune out is the implosion of constitutional government, but okay.

it is misleading to say trump is imposing a 50% tariff on Colombia — he is imposing a 50% tax on Americans who buy imports from Colombia

Two-thirds of Americans drink coffee every day. If Democrats can't make political hay out of TRUMP JUST PUT A 25% TAX ON YOUR COFFEE then I don't know what we're doing here. Figure comes from the coffee people: www.ncausa.org/Newsroom/Dai...

The story of this first week is corruption. Billionaires seated on the inaugural stage in front of the cabinet, crypto pump and dump, and the illegal firing of IGs. The media is acting like this is too chaotic and bewildering to interpret, but they are just afraid of sounding shrill. It’s corrupt.
