If a month ago you'd have told me the Trump administration was going to start arresting judges, I'd have said...yes, obviously, that's what authoritarians do, I've been saying this for nearly ten years.

For what it’s worth, here’s the editorial I sent the Globe and Mail April 5. The Globe took a pass. Balancing Individual Rights and Community Health Requires Knowledge of History

Grackle.

Some recent affable space monsters.

In Mozambique, a temporary COVID-19 initiative has grown into a lasting model for health and social services. Posts now offer malaria tests, TB screening, and blood pressure checks. The Ministry of Health converted several community posts into permanent structures. buff.ly/T5xCoqz #ShareGoodNewsToo

Helicopters from the Vietnam war are airlifting rhinos to safety. Hueys are revolutionising rhino translocation across Africa; a conservation measure designed to create new populations and ensure genetic diversity. buff.ly/yDam252 #ShareGoodNewsToo

Masking is cool, intersectional, and the best people are still doing it. Masks prevent virus spread, help block a lot of allergens, and signal to those around you that you care about science and health issues. If you're not masking in public spaces, you're not intersectional!

All hail the NHS. The United Kingdom's publicly-funded health system is launching a new vaccine trial for patients with advanced skin cancer, aiming to provide personalised cancer treatments to up to 10,000 patients in England by 2030. buff.ly/fmFZDxw #ShareGoodNewsToo

My Absolute Martian Manhunter cover is available tomorrow(?)! Colours by @chrisohalloran.bsky.social

childcare is a social good: it has direct benefits for parents and children — for income, education, socialization, health — and it's also good for the economy, stimulating spending & creating jobs. every reason to oppose it boils down to the most regressive, moronic sexism.

In case you missed this yesterday, while the world's a trash fire, here's something that might make you smile...

Oh hey! WE SPEAK THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN gets a shout-out in this list of books suggested by CBC for Earth Day! "Reid Graham is 19 years old and fighting against both the climate crisis-affected Rocky Mountains and her own chronic illness to make her way to Howse University, a supposed safe haven."

Renewing my call to clone a super race of Eleanor Roosevelts to take over all of the world’s governments.

Are you having fun with fiber arts? (Embroidery, knitting, etc.?) Would love recommendations for your favorite vendors and crafting sites. <3

These are not Canadian journalism’s “first principles“ Canada’s first newspapers railed against British colonial rule and the family compact. They used their presses to advocate for responsible government They didn’t take a hard line against “advocacy,” they took a hard line against corrupt elites

Woman whose ancestors stole entire continent suspects Indigenous person shoplifting

I think this is a combination of a lot of things, but mostly Canadians not knowing *how* our ballots are counted and just relying on "that's what happens in the states" messaging. I highly recommend any concerned Canadian to call up their party of choice and ask to be an election night scrutineer.

Just standing in my kitchen staring at the stupidest thing I’ve ever read in my fucking life

I am two weeks behind on my good news roundup so here we go. What you missed in good news during the worst modern timeline. A thread/

Clean power surpasses 40% of global electricity for first time since 1940s. Solar is leading the charge (now doubling every three years) and 80 countries now generate over half their electricity from clean sources. buff.ly/p0ClPJl #ShareGoodNewsToo

American (and Canadian) friends. If you want the Canadian political and economic perspective on what's happening in the world and how we'll have to navigate it, our PM gave and excellent and wide-ranging interview. youtu.be/V11qNDDElZw?...

I just saw Sarah Palin did an anti-fascism today, and I just want to say I'm thinking of the brave people of the US over a certain age who are just sobbing into their lattes as they whimper, "Welcome to the resistance, Sarah fucking Palin."

Poilievre’s “I will lose my superpowers if I get my security clearance” shtick says everything about him. How is it that the sideshow huckster with the endless patter in this race isn’t the guy named Carney? Real failure on the writer’s part.

Every time I’ve been forced against my will to see that stupid fucking photo of JKR & her cigar I’ve said “she looks like a cartoon villain” & I finally figured out which one

Japan has constructed the world's first train station building using 3D printing. Assembled in just 2.5 hours after daily service ended, the structure costs half as much as traditional reinforced concrete while maintaining equivalent earthquake resistance. buff.ly/d57McRL #ShareGoodNewsToo

Debate Commission couldn’t just have kicked Rebel Media out?!* Who wins? Not Canadians! Not an independent & free press! Not democracy! But Rebel Media, a disinformation peddling, rage farming, progressive attacking, conservative funded lobby group. And they will fundraise off of this! So brutal. 🤬

Poilievre now deeply conflicted, finish the debate, or run out and bring Ezra Levant and his crew coffee and donuts?

“Funniest” line in tonight’s debate… At one point, each candidate was able to ask 1 other candidate a tough question. All 3 other candidates targeted Carney. When it was Carney’s turn, he said “I guess I’ll ask myself a question too…” Clever. (Then he asked Poilievre about his security check.)

OKAY SERIOUSLY THOUGH Women of Canada: what is it about Pierre Poilievre's voice that makes me wish I didn't understand English?

I was trying to listen, but it's much too painful. Thank goodness for this thread!

BREAKING: Indigenous person unsure if house with giant Canadian flag belongs to freedom convoy supporter or Liberal

“People call [the antiscience movement] ‘misinformation’ or ‘the infodemic’ as tho it’s just random junk out there on the Internet or social media, and it’s not— it’s organized, it’s well-financed, and it’s politically motivated.” — Dr. @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social in @sciam.bsky.social

My last thought on this because I need some Offline Time: Because of their fear of being defined as "not neutral" or "biased," the bodies who label "journalists" and adjudicate access are increasingly complicit in the destruction of our information ecosystem. Meet the moment and grow a spine.

The Debate Commission’s decision to give questions to Rebel Media & other rage farming, disinformation outlets (who focus on attacking progressive politicians & their families as I well know) at expense of credible news organizations is not only absurd, it degrades our democracy.

Wonder how you lose your democracy? Proactively giving legitimacy to peddlers of disinformation is definitely near the top of the list.

The Debate Commission should consult Federal Court decision where Rebel Media was found to be not engaged in production of original news content & not entitled to ““qualified Canadian journalism organization”” designation. Scared? Get better lawyers. Stand up for democracy.

Thank you @jagmeetsingh.ca This is how you deal with disinformation peddling, rage farming outlets.

A decision by the Supreme Court of British Columbia to reject a $75-million compensation claim made by a logging company that once operated on Haida Gwaii could have reverberations across the province as the government continues its reconciliation efforts with First Nations.
