Another landscape shot, this time a lighthouse from a distance.

Firaxis—the studio behind the Civilization series—is hiring a historian. An *actual* historian. And note, when they ask for "4+ years as a Writer, Narrative Designer, or other position with commensurate duties," that includes teaching, writing, and research—i.e. your Ph.D. in History.

I like taking photos of weird things with beautiful landscape behind it. This is a wooden fence post with a view of the wonderful beach behind it.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! 🎄🎁🙏

I may have learned a lesson in marketing in a very inexpensive way. I tried running ads on Meta, Google, and LinkedIn. So far, none seem to be better than personal outreach and referrals. Best $300 I’ve spent so far.

Woohoo! XRay support in RISC-V! 🎉🎉🎉

Mega Christmas sale on all of my ebooks! Only 12.99USD for all 10 books, including both of my C++ Best Practices books and all of my puzzle books Valid through December 25th.

Here we go! Speakers, get to work on your proposals. And, if you could, please also tell at least one attendee that we exist and are a nice conference! Attendees are what fund speakers! Hesitant to submit? We have advice and mentoring, please start a submission so we can help you be there.

Hi @signal.org — any reason why I’m unable to create a new group at the moment?

Here's my latest drop on Career Crafting, talking about how to create a learning plan to specialise in Software Engineering: modernsoftware.info/modern-swe-p...

I've summarised some of the efforts I've been going into this past couple of weeks towards the end of 2024: medium.com/@deanberris/...

If I haven’t had time to text you or let you know that I appreciate you, I do. I appreciate that you are out here trying to stay positive in the face of negativity, and that you were trying to move the ball forward to the best of your ability. Hang in there!

So excited to read through this in the… *checks notes* … coming months! 😂📖

I’m trying something new: here’s a compilation of my 5-article series in Medium as a standalone book! This one’s expanded to include questions to help in reflection for individuals, teams, and organisations. This one’s 60% off until the end of the year! www.deanberris.com/store/p/mode...

I’ve realised that I’ve been doing this software engineering thing for 20 years and that this might be valuable experience to others. This is why I’ve relaunched my website and am making myself available for 1:1 coaching. Reach out if you think I can help! www.deanberris.com

💻 Remember, if you're on a Mac, you can clean up your desktop by having screenshots sent to another folder: defaults write com.apple.screencapture location whatever-the-pwd-of-folder-is (then do killall SystemUIServer)

Sometimes, the hardest thing to do in life is to say “no” to opportunities that come your way. The wiser (not just older) we get, the more discerning we can be. But it’s still hard to act and close a door when there’s something shiny on the other side.

Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.

Folks — I’m starting an exploration into a space I know very little about and I’d love your help. Do you know good packages in Rust/Go for SAT solving or model checking? I’m only vaguely aware of Z3 and TLA+, and I’m doing some research to attack an optimization/constraint solving problem. 🙏

You need to read this thread so you can use the meme to quickly explain to someone else why you're reacting strongly to something very small. Because you should.

This was stuck in my drafts for a while and was on the verge of getting too long, so I decided to edit it down and finally complete it. I also decided not to paywall this for maximum reach and utility. 😊 medium.com/@deanberris/...

I’m watching a backlog of videos and just saw @matt.godbolt.org mentioned along with @compiler-explorer.com in a @primeagen.bsky.social video by Casey Muratori. youtu.be/Zr09I5OlOjs?...

I've kicked off a starter pack of LLVM contributors/developers on Bluesky under @llvmweekly.org. Just let me know if I've missed you! Thanks to @chandlerc.blog for the friendly nudge

Today I’m learning that I’m not smart enough to understand Kubernetes’ pod affinity and anti-affinity features. I call it a good day. 😊

This is a good episode, a cautionary tale of why working well with others and having balance in life is important. podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/c...
