These people. Good people. Nice to be in Ottawa talking digital with government officials here.

Whoa. So Lutnik is calling Ford (a premier - like a governor) to say that tariffs are a negotiation??? Okay. So what are your goals? Because everyone up here is pretty confused about that. See thread below. This is basic negotiation stuff. Ooph. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Omg. They are worried. Can you imagine the European Union calling the governor of Texas and not the White House cause the governor bans European companies from government contracts. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Also, Ottawa really living up to its rep. Glad I brought a toque.

I don’t know if this thread is true. But if yes… good news. And yet… we DEFINITELY CANNOT LET THESE PEOPLE NEGOTIATE WITH THE RUSSIANS.

I also dislike these references that state Trump is doing this. As though the senate and house are somehow powerless to stop it. For now America is choosing to do this. Let that sink in. This is not simply the acts of a madman, this is an entire political establishment working in concert.

Either America wants: A) to destroy/absorb Canada B) to disconnect America from trade partners (or mercantilism) C) Believes tariffs make create revenue D) Doesn’t know what it wants. “A” is existential while B-D are dangerous. But there ain’t anything to negotiate.

Buckle up

Sad to read about the end of 18F. Many good people flowed through there and I was lucky to be asked in to do PIF induction sessions. Something will be reborn. Because something is still needed.

Every country in the world is right now dusting off its “how to build a nuclear bomb plan”. Looking forward to a nuclear armed South Korea, Japan, Australia, Germany, Ukraine, Poland with likely more to come? Maybe even in Canada! Big win for global stability today.

Pass it on. #StandWithUkraine

This is exciting - look what just arrived (pre-orders help!):

Early in the war, Ukrainian officials were ecstatic to welcome Elon Musk's "help." Now Trump/Musk appear to be using Starlink as part of the US scheme to secure a quid pro quo for Ukraine's survival. Our allies should take note that it appears our only principle is truly "America First."

We’re entering a mercantile world where every investment will matter. Bio-fuels don’t make sense ecologically of financially. The sooner Canada faces that fact (and similar issue with hydrogen) the better. The era of fantasies is over. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/eco...

It is not.

Is it flattery when someone else takes your work, turns it into a report, and puts their name on it?

Fun times in Naorobi. Nice park/forest they have here right in the city… Double joy to be able to see former students!

Excited to see this out and feel privileged to have had a chance to work with the Brazilian government again.

Trump's threats should remind us of Canada's underpopulation risk. From November, but even more relevant now that we've experienced the danger of an undersized domestic market. www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/e33036f...

Everyone is re-evaluating their relationship with the US. From the BRICS to the 5eyes. This really is a turning point in history. It’s staggering the void being left open for others to fill. Markets seem to have strong opinions too.

Hey @theglobeandmail.com Get a team of crack Econ journalists to create one of these daily charts showing USA’s cumulative job losses and other impacts of this stupid tariff war. It’s helpful to show the world and Americans the cost of insanity.

These are the indicative estimates of Russia’s combat losses as of Feb. 2, according to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

It would be funny if it weren't so serious.

The Wall Street Journal isn’t pulling any punches tonight. “The Dumbest Trade War in History. Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for no good reason.” With big consequences for both countries that are each other’s biggest trading partners and closest allies. Or at least we were.

Will be interesting to see if Tesla sales in Canada ever recover after this trade war.

So I guess Canada and Mexico are going to be in a trade war with a president who signed a free trade agreement with them… 6 years or so ago? Lot of bridges gonna be burned.

This notion that a public sector job must, by definition be lower productivity… sigh. Having planes crash is… a fast track to a lot less productivity, probably more so than say, launching a meme coin.

If you wanted to help reduce inflation in the US (or elsewhere too) you could do worse than look at the 2-3% interchange fees charged by the credit cards and banks. Halving those fees via a public option, regulation or competition enforcement might have a real impact.

My favorite fact about the NYC subway is that there are way more daily riders (about 4 million) than the number of people who fly in the US out of all airports every day (~2.5 million). The scale is hard to get a grasp on.
