The 2025 Heronries Census season starts very soon and we have many colonies which need counting! Discover how to get involved ➡️ www.bto.org/our-science/... #UKBirding

Such a fantastic initiative! What a great way to welcome people into birding

Our first volunteering for Toad Patrol in Thetford Forest this evening. Bit cold for amphibians (1 Frog, 1 Smooth Newt) but Woodcock, Barn Owl and Tawny Owl on our #BirdTrack list.

What a joy to see the first Sand Martin of the year over the Sailing Pool #uptonwarren this morning found by @andypitt.bsky.social Feeding well. The earliest date ever for the reserve (previous early date was the 25/2/2021). #worcsbirds

We’re hiring! We’re looking for a Field Ornithologist (full or part-time) to join BTO Northern Ireland for the spring survey season (April-June). Apply online ➡️ www.bto.org/jobs #Ornithology 📝 Closing date: Wednesday 5th March

The BTO/RSPB/NE Heathland Birds Survey is underway. Lots of squares to cover in East Anglia (and elsewhere!) for Woodlark, Dartford Warbler and Nightjar. Can you help with the survey? #BirdingNorfolk #BirdingSuffolk www.bto.org/our-science/...

Fancy searching for Nightjars, or even Dartford Warblers, in our region for the new @btobirds.bsky.social ‘Heathland Birds Survey’? Of course you do! More info and how to sign up for the survey here: www.bto.org/our-science/...

The map of Nightjar squares for this summer’s Heathland Birds Survey is now available. For this survey you only have to be able to identify Nightjars by their distinctive churring call. For more information or to request a square just click here: www.bto.org/our-science/... #ShropshireBirding

Arrived in Newtown and catching up on a few emails in the B&B and amazed how the sky went from grey to this in just 10 minutes! Looking forward to the @btocymru.bsky.social Regional Network meeting tomorrow.

We have a talk coming up this Friday 21st February at 19:15 at St. Paul's Parish Centre, Sketty on 'Understanding and Conserving Gower's Birds', which will be presented by Gethin Jenkins-Jones from BTO Cymru. Full details at the link below: www.gowerbirds.org.uk/event/the-ro...

In Feb 23 we undertook a census of the UK naturalised Barnacle Goose population. The aim to produce an updated population estimate & report on winter distribution. Results have now been published in @britishbirds.bsky.social, with our thinking on future monitoring needs #Ornithology 1/7 ⬇️

It’s OUT now! 🥳🤩 Watch Amy King and I’s new documentary, ‘Conservation: the Next Generation’ on YouTube: youtu.be/b0CPY7IZ4VA?... Featuring @senizdoesnature.bsky.social, @entomolojosh.bsky.social, Hannah King, and Johnathon Miller-McCall.

1/ The @naturescot.bsky.social Scottish indicators were published last week. The data, a lot from @[email protected] from 94-23, show how Scottish birds are doing in different habitats. Woodland birds are doing relatively well, but upland birds are in decline. www.nature.scot/doc/official...

Does anyone know why the #Norfolkbirding feed is always short? Just four posts visible to me. It's always short compared with other feeds - a setting somewhere? @stevedudley.bsky.social any idea? Thanks

It’s not quite spring, but it’s on the way. Which means it’s time to start recording rare breeding birds to help the work of the RBBP. Stay tuned through the spring & summer for videos and blogs with guidance on how you can add extra value to your birding #ornithology #ukbirding #birds

If and when we get some clear, sunny days, February and March provide the best opportunity to record breeding Goshawks as they display over territories - here’s some encouragement from RBBP Secretary @markaeaton.bsky.social #ukbirding #ornithology youtu.be/hVgl6jYOX6A?...

Freezing cold day but enjoyed the Whooper Swans at WWT Welney today and even managed a bit of ring-reading. Great to see so many Whoopers in late afternoon today. Also 17 Cranes, 6 Cattle Egret and 5 very distant Tundra Bean Geese #NorfolkBirding

The Shropshire Rookeries Survey is a big citizen science project for this year. Please go to www.lanius.org.uk/preview/ to check for sites near where you may be out and about and see if there are any you can update. It would be great to get more of those pins coloured in! #ShropshireBirding

Been a quiet, chilly, grey old week. Spent my time trying to locate heronry colonies for BTO census. No sign of any nesting activity yet, must be too cold. Has anyone else seen any heron activity? #heron #carmsbirds #birdingWales #ukbirding @btocymru.bsky.social @btobirds.bsky.social

It's very easy to use the BirdTrack phone app to report dead birds. This information is used for monitoring purposes. It's also really important the record is submitted to Defra (Eng, Scot, Wales) or Daera (Northern Ireland) for possible collection and testing. We really appreciate all the records.

Wow! Impressive movement

The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) and Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme (GSMP) are now on Bluesky! 🦢 We'll be sharing our latest research findings, how to get involved & vacant survey sites. We’d love to know what you’ve seen on your surveys too, so tag us in your posts. 🦆 #Ornithology #UKBirding

⚠️ A reminder to please report all sightings of dead birds for possible testing for Avian Influenza. In England, Wales & Scotland, contact Defra, in Northern Ireland contact @daera-ni.gov.uk & in Republic of Ireland gov.ie. Please ALSO report them to @birdtrack.bsky.social. Thank you. #UKBirding

Despite the very gloomy morning, it was a joy to hear Woodlark singing in the Brecks. Sound up and listen- you can hear two! Scraped 29 species for my #BirdTrack list and breeding evidence added. #norfolkbirding

A new blog by BTO’s Máire Kirkland and Chris Hewson looks at their research tracking Nightingales.➡️ bit.ly/NightingaleB... They found birds breeding in the UK overwinter in a very small area of West Africa so show an unusual degree of migratory connectivity. @springernature.com #Ornithology

(1/) This week’s ‘Talon Spotting’ species focus is Tawny Owl. This species has declined since the mid-1990s. However, due to its nocturnal habits, this species is difficult to monitor by the Breeding Bird Survey alone. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social #Ornithology
