You've got til Feb 28th to send me your 300-word (or less) gems - even the strange ones in all sorts of shapes and styles that you think no-one else but you could love! #FlashFiction www.fishpublishing.com/competition/...

Apparently, the train has arrived.

Sorry to hear about David Lynch. I worked beside him (same studio) while he was making BLUE VELVET. He answered my questions about his work with grace and honesty. I especially enjoyed his deeply existential comic strip, The Angriest Dog in the World.”

Every month I compile a round-up of the best writing prizes, residencies and bursaries, all with upcoming deadlines. It's the stuff that can change writing lives. The next issue is going out on Sunday morning. freelancewritingjobs.substack.com

This looks great!

Second book of the year, Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris. I loved this book, and it deserved all the nominations it received. It was moving, visceral, and insightful as it explored the experience of living through war. Definitely recommend.

I've just finished reading my first 2 books of the year. First on The Blue Houe by Paula Hawkins, my favourite book of hers. Although the ending was predictable, the way it happened was quite ambiguous.

Husband: why are you reorganising the whole house? Me: because I have a month to finish my novel.

This a delightful read by @joannechocolat.bsky.social on the joy of libraries and how books can give us all a home. ‘Night fell. Outside the air was filled with snow and streetlights. Clearly, I was destined to spend the night in the library.’ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Looking for workshop leaders with at least 5 years of teaching experience, knowledge in the field of the flash narrative, and a connection to the flash community! Do you have something new and exciting to share with our workshop participants? www.smokelong.com/work-with-us/

What gets in the way of me completing my assignments? If Simon's cat was a dog, he'd be called Ted!

Tomorrow we publish our first book of 2025. It’s pretty amazing. We can’t wait for you to read it!

How to choose 1 poem from the many, again. John McCullough isn't on Bsky yet, I think, but he's 1 of the most supportive people in the poetry community & a fabulous poet. So, here are 3 of his on the brilliant @iambapoet.com 'Tender Vessels' especially, for me. www.iambapoet.com/john-mccullo...

Have just finished reading the wonderful swimming memoir, Floating, by Joe Minhane. It helped me today as I swam in the cold at Brighton's wonderful, outdoor pool, Sea Lanes. Thank you, Joe!

Are you an emerging writer who has not published a book-length work and who would love to work with SmokeLong for six months? Find out more. Application deadline soon! www.smokelong.com/the-smokelon...

I do wish I could be as successful at writing as I am at daydreaming.

Went to see NightBitch at a film festival. Amy Adams was amazing, but I felt the film was a bit tame and wrapped up too neatly at the end. Has anyone else seen it? How does it compare to the book?

If anyone’s looking for alternatives to GoodReads, I highly recommend StoryGraph. It’s owned by a black woman, and the platform is so much more accessible and easy to use.

We started Bluemoose to find great new writers and cracking stories and to see them travel from Hebden over the border to Lancashire to readers worldwide is wonderful. Ghost Mountain by @ronanhession.bsky.social has just been published in Germany by Penguin, translated by Andrea O'Brien.

Announcing the shortlist for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation 2024! From Brazil to South Korea to Poland, we honour superbly translated work from great writers of the present and the recent past. tinyurl.com/3uff923y

Another rejection today, even though I'm aiming for a 100 rejections, it still feels personal!
