The party of Lincoln

Once again, the quiet, separate lawsuits-only strategy is not going to work. R1 presidents need to be out in public, loudly & collectively speaking out against what is an existential assault on 🇺🇸 research universities: bsky.app/profile/mcop...

Committed to public service and public servants, the No. 1-ranked Maxwell School is offering reduced tuition for qualifying professional graduate degree programs to current or former U.S. federal government employees. ➡️ Find out more: bit.ly/4khMcy3

it is pretty striking that despite a wholesale abandonment of Reagan foreign policy, aesthetics, etc, domestically the GOP is still doing the exact same 1980s routine of robbing the poor to give to the rich slate.com/news-and-pol...

The CFPB has dismissed an enforcement action that it had filed last year against #SoLoFunds for deceiving borrowers and illegally extracting fees. Now states have to pick up the pieces against a company that's deceiving borrowers and ignoring rate caps. www.nclc.org/cfpb-drops-l...

New study out in @sfjournal.bsky.social. We find Christian nationalism is among the leading predictors of multiple measures of racial solidarity, but ONLY FOR WHITES. For Blacks, CN actually seems to make them LESS inclined to advocate for themselves in politics. 1/3 academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

How did the Reconstruction Amendments affect the mobility + citizenship of Black Americans, Native Americans, Chinese immigrants, & European immigrants? In a crisp 28 pages, I explain. Last & final article before the full book is out in 2026. @gracemallon.bsky.social @conniethomas.bsky.social

I'm going to use my (ahem) *considerable* influence here to officially start the petition. Just give us the rest of this season of Severance. Now. (Please)

Interested in austerity politics and public opinion? I greatly enjoyed this conversation with @vikburgi.bsky.social and @juliusk.bsky.social, drawing on my work with @retobuergisser.bsky.social and other ongoing research. Check it out and listen to the other fantastic episodes of the podcast, too🎙️

The attacks on DEI are a pretext for a much more radical agenda of reversing the gains of the civil rights movement, an objective the Trump administration is pursuing with zeal. A Great Resegregation. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

“I can exist on cornflakes and community at the end of the day if it means that my soul is intact.” Also, peep the CFPB union member who barged into a DOGE meeting in the basement to defend our agency! And join your local union #solidarityforever

This is going to go on at many universities - the uncertainty will lead to fewer graduate programs. It will hobble scientific research which appears to be the goal.

My favorite podcast/radio show, Behind the News with @doughenwood.bsky.social, just put up a new episode featuring Anatol Lieven and @quinnslobodian.com. It's hard to imagine a better pair of interviewees to make sense of the strange times we are living in. www.leftbusinessobserver.com/Radio.html

Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes. You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment. My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc. www.reddit.com/r/Passports/...

Seems totally fine

Just seeing the RCT 'scandal' brewing among econs again. This is not a question about some bad apples or some instances of malpractice. The RCT industry has been completely distorted from its inception in Econ and this is closely tied to the incentive structure of the discipline.

My latest article, written with @benclift.bsky.social and @benrosamond1.bsky.social, is out #OA in Economy & Society. We use Brexit discourses as a window into the gendered politics of economic expertise. @sotonpolitics.bsky.social 🧵 doi.org/10.1080/0308...

Maybe I wasn’t clear about this. I wanted more egg and no plane crash, not many plane crash and no egg.

Nope 👎🏻

"I heard the news today, oh boy!" Released 50 years ago on this date (in the US; the UK single came out a few days later). Do you remember the bills you have to pay, or even yesterday? Its Cavett performance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydLc...

This piece by @quinnslobodian.com is the best analysis of DOGE out there. Quinn is spot on that what we are seeing with Trump/Musk/DOGE right now is "the convergence of three strains of politics that have never simultaneously been this proximate to power." www.nybooks.com/online/2025/...

I am glad to see that this (30 year old line of research for some of us) is getting the necessary attention. For a summary of the extensive literature see www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

Blyth: "We've just pulled the scab off of what America is, a right-wing oligarchy with a democracy for tax purposes." radioopensource.org/blyth-is-back/

Is it not the case that journalists interested in a free press are sort of by definition opponents of an authoritarian movement/administration whether they want it that way or not? Choosing to simply “observe” for fear of being labeled an opponent is always going to be a losing game at this point.

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

There is no going back. /fin

Our research university leaders are totally failing us in the authoritarian moment. Not even trying to loudly & publicly defend the project of academia or the institutions. Just choosing a combination of “keep our heads down” & anticipatory compliance. Shamefully inadequate to the moment.

FANTASTIC ICPSR at U Mich is coordinating the archiving of at-risk federal data (all of it?) You can upload data you have & search for data you don’t have www.datalumos.org/datalumos/

If a student in my 1000 level intro to global politics course said something like this I would hang my head in shame because I had failed them!

I'm hearing now that *every* technologist CFPB hired to investigate Big Tech was fired this evening. That's somewhere between 70-100 people. wired.com/story/dozens-of-cfpb-workers-terminated-in-after-hours-firing-blitz/

Tuesday next week! Not sure the subtitle points to the most promising area to find disagreement among the panelists, but in any case, excited for this discussion with @brettchristophers.bsky.social, @danielagabor.bsky.social & @jonathanhopkin.bsky.social. In person (first come, first serve) & online

Federal employment peaked over 30 years ago. The headcount of US federal government has barely increased since 1970 despite a two-thirds increase in population. More from Chartbook: tinyurl.com/4myu898d.

Ireland collects much of the corporate tax revenue a more coherent US tax code would channel back across the Atlantic. Political scientists: please consider signing, and sharing with other political scientists, this petition, which expresses urgent concerns about threats to the balance of powers in the U.S. today. Hundreds have already signed.

I know it’s insane to just post about this given the gravity but it feels important to reiterate that we are in a constitutional crisis and - even strategically speaking - I don’t think it’s possible to overreact to the admin’s brazen lawlessness.

My latest: The CFPB's Closure helps Elon Musk — but hurts the rest of us: "No one in the White House appears interested in consumer regulation. The tech titans seek to expand their monopolies into financial services, preferably w/o CFPB referees standing in the way." www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
