HOT RESEARCH NEWS! Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor... Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

A very clear response from London Fire Commissioner, Andy Rowe to a question at Fire Plenary last week from Emma Best AM about the impact of LTNs on fire brigade attendance times. "We genuinely couldn't find any evidence of LTNs doing anything to our overall attendance times".

Headphones moment.

Had a lot of love for cargo bike at the tip yesterday (Oxford’s Redbridge). The man letting me in had a long chat with me about advantage of electric, and a woman shouted out of her car window “brilliant! I love it”

Govert Flinckstraat, Amsterdam in 1984 and today. Once dominated by parked cars and traffic, now a peaceful, people-friendly space with cafés, greenery, and a safe space for anyone to cycle A street reclaimed for the community! 🚲🌿

Great to be part of a roundtable with London Borough climate cabinet members from across London last week. Bernie Sanders: "They will use the enormous media operations they own to deflect attention away from the impact of their policies while they entertain us to death."

Urban transformation is about more than beautification. It’s about returning public spaces back to their original purpose: places for connection, play, spontaneity, relaxation, and sometimes movement from A to B (and C and D)…

What's it like working with Disabled cyclists? Really no different to working with non-Disabled cyclists: treat people with respect, listen to their needs, and provide a safe supportive environment for them to experience the joy! Our long-standing instructors share some of their insights:

While there’s much praise for the bicycling in Europe, not enough attention is given to bike communities in Latin America. I’ve biked for years in QR, Mexico. I’m deeply inspired by the ingenuity, especially within the indigenous communities. Perhaps its time to refocus our attention from 🇳🇱 to🇨🇴?

Labour's disgusting deportation stunt this week wasn't just morally bankrupt, it was politically stupid. Politicians need to find the backbone to be honest about the real source of our problems: the wealthy elite draining money from our communities metro.co.uk/2025/02/11/l...

Transport is a gendered issue. Great to see our work - showing that in England, women made over a third more bus journeys than men - featured by @unison.org.uk. The severe cuts to bus routes have disproportionately affected women, especially in rural areas. magazine.unison.org.uk/2025/02/11/o...

Urban life thrives when designed for people, not just cars. Safe, active routes give families the freedom to enjoy the journey, transforming routine trips into experiences full of connection and discovery.

Mexico City’s weekly 35-mile ciclovía was a sight to see. We rode from La Condesa to the historic center, and up and down Paseo de la Reforma. Super well organized and accessible. Nothing beats riding across the city with thousands of others, without a car in sight.

“…this extreme car dependence is affecting Americans’ quality of life, with a new study finding there is a tipping point at which more driving leads to deeper unhappiness…having to drive for more than 50% of the time for out-of-home activities is linked to a decrease in life satisfaction.”

This stuff MATTERS!

Wow. CSO say 2024 saw a record 328 million public transport journeys on bus 🚌Luas 🚋 and rail 🚂 Year-on-year growth of 10% & an increase of 36% on 2022 figures! Big changes can happen: We’re confident a joined-up cycling network will lead to even bigger growth in nos. of people cycling! 🚲📈💚

I'm afraid what risks 'hollowing out' London is property prices, foreign consortia owning countless empty buildings, rental costs, the decimation of nightlife, gentrification and Pretification and the demise of in person shopping. It should be somewhere we want to go not have to.

"According to a 2013 UC Berkeley study titled “Pounds That Kill,” weight was found to be a critical factor in fatal auto crashes. The study found that each 1,000-pound increase in a striking vehicle’s weight increased the probability of a fatality in the struck vehicle by 47%."

Good opportunity to highlight how Waltham Forest Council and TfL transformed sense of security on former Quietway 2 (C27) by rerouting to fully lit alignment in recent years. The new alignment connects to places people work, a train station and C23 (Lea Bridge Rd). In can be done.

Britain once led the world in road safety. Road collisions cost the country about £40bn ($50bn, or 1.5% of GDP) each year. In 2011, the government dropped its road safety targets altogether. The new government promises a strategy, but will it be enough? www.economist.com/britain/2025...

Right I'll do a little bit of reporting from today's #LabourWalksCycles25 event in Leicester. We've kicked off with Geoff Whittle, assistant Mayor who has inspired us with what the city has been up to in terms of change.

Well done Greater Manchester! Now reaping the rewards of your consistent investment in 🐝 network: walking up from 52% to 57% & short car trips down from 41% to 36% in the last 5 years. Residents confirm the 🐝 network is enabling them to walk or cycle as part of daily lives. 👏

Not looking hopeful for net zero and cargo bikes logistics in the UK when the largest private company doing last mile has to call in the administrators? Another slight on this governments inability to incentivise cargo bikes with any conviction. Must do better. news.sky.com/story/electr...

If you want parents to cycle to primary school with their young children in your city then building protected cycle tracks on main roads is an essential requirement
