What a vibe. Such a beautiful day, full of gorgeous queers, and so many empowering and uplifting words at Defying Destiny. And thankfully peaceful. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I love that the response to a small amount of hate is a huge outpouring of love 💚💚💚 wish I had seen more of this in the U.S.

it's so gorgeously low key here in Albert Park today orders of magnitude less intense than an LSD lovefest but no one is left behind #nzpol

Incredible result in Albert Park this afternoon from @papa.org.nz and friends. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Tāmaki Makaurau folk: if you're sharing photos of the @papa.org.nz Defying Destiny event today at Albert Park, please include alt text and/or image descriptions. It seems like it was a beaut time had by all, let's make sure our communities can all share in knowing a bit of that āe

This would be a massive waste of money. There’s no way NZ could ever spend enough to give the world’s military super-powers pause. Judith Collins signals 'big' defence investment www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...

"Over and over again, we’re being told that everyone should be treated the same. That’s flawed and driven by ideology rather than evidence." - Collin Tukuitonga. 🇳🇿@etangata.bsky.social

Reminds me of the 1990s when a Nat Govt Minister (name??) claimed our hospitals were full of victims of cannabis abuse. When journalists checked it became clear (to anyone who wasn't already aware) that our hospitals are actually full of victims of alcohol abuse.🙄 #SeymoursReckonsAreAllLies #nzpol

shockingly, david seymour lied. like he lied about when he knew his party president was a rapist.

What a wonderful mural for efeso

My parents here in Tāmaki have a childhood friend visiting from Canada who happens to be a Trump supporter. Apparently her month here out of the bubble and watching NZ media perspectives of the USA has started shifting her politics.

The VC of Cardiff was the Provost at VUW immediately prior. Did significant damage here, looks like that has intensified in her new job. Just appalling.

Napier City Council proposes to close its library for two years. Glad I don't live there. Councils can close anything else but not #libraries! People rely on #books to escape, to learn, to enjoy ideas and stories. Libraries are more than books, they're community taonga www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/542...

The mining debate needs to go much deeper than the shallow “jobs versus frogs” framing, writes Catherine Delahunty. #nzpol

As I warned last year here it is. Govt is opening up our sensitive assets & lands to foreign acquisition & removed significant due diligence steps. Wealthy money can acquire significant business assets, existing forestry & non-farmland land within 15 days. Media reports today parrot gov #Kiwi #NZ

“Rainbow community stands against Tamaki, Destiny Church at Auckland's Albert Park” www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Seymour seems to be the “Associate Minister” of most of Govt. Have a count of how many policy announcements he’s made. It’s far too many for someone with less than 10% support. #nzgovt

So far I've only seen digital coverage on RNZ This seems to indicate NZ media have a vested interest in publishing far-right activism above & beyond the way they cover peaceful progressive movements We should be *scrambling* to ask why that is & seeking to change it - its an outrageous precedent

And I am an ally. If you are too, let the world know.

Make art. Be kind. The world’s a bit awful so spreading joy; small artworks for $25 incl p&p in NZ. $32NZD overseas. "Be different" Abstract landscape using handpainted papers, with quote. A5 incl border. Photos on phone for accurate colour, but hard to get straight 😂 Comment sold then DM me.

"Pacific countries and territories trying to assert their sense of autonomy need to be treated with respect and mana, and not be growled at in a paternalistic way, as if they’re delinquent juveniles": Steven Ratuva Well said!! e-tangata.co.nz/comment-and-...

Calm, sensible and affirming advice #nzpol

The Defying Destiny protest was awesome. Tautoko to @papa.org.nz, it was one of the best rallies I've ever been to. Lots of shade (literal and metaphorical), decent sound system, no boring bits, great speakers and some group dancing.

Stop doing the enemy’s work for them e-tangata.co.nz/reflections/...

Whenever I meet new people at the moment and they find out I work in healthcare they say "oh I'm so sorry, that must be so hard with our current government" It's surprised me because even people I was expecting to be fairly politically conservative have had a clear sense the things are dire #nzpol

Here be wisdom

Huge respect to @papa.org.nz and what it shows is that years of hard mahi, making connections, showing up for meetings, solving tech issues, all that boring stuff ENABLES powerful action. They couldn’t have done it in a week without a thousand hours of community and history.

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

All eyes are set on Te Matatini where hundreds prepare to battle it out on stage and thousands make their way to Pukekura in New Plymouth.

Infuriating media habit: acting as if their own coverage had no impact and/or doesn’t exist

The vibe was so wonderful & affirming Huge shoutout to @papa.org.nz, not just for taking a stand but for turning around an amazing, well organised event with an *incredible* line up of speakers in LESS THAN A WEEK This is the *blueprint* for how multiple orgs can take action. Let's see more of it!

Defying Destiny was a great time. Nothing like spending a few hours in the park filled with hundreds of lovely queer folks on a perfect sunny day I'm kind of amazed at how well the organisers did putting this together in such a short time. The speakers were empowering We're going to win

Rainbow community stand in solidarity against Destiny Church www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

And yet we’ve moved completely away from the pedophile that ACT ran cover for. The media’s inability to hold Seymour and his party to account for even the vilest actions is quite something.

Paul's right - the way this is being reported is deeply inappropriate, and at the same time, the targeting of Ghahraman has exposed a huge, troubling, and ongoing invasion of the privacy of all of us. Firing a few security guards doesn't even begin to address the issues it raises. #nzpol

Sensible and helpful article I signed up to Mountain Tui today. I’ve never been a big subscriber to anything tbh. But right now, supporting and sharing analysis, journalism and commentary is so crucial (& if you can afford it subscribe 🙏🏻) Let’s help shore up these voices and build our communities

“The [NZ govt] political action stems from ideology grounded in ignorance, racism & fear. It has nothing to do with evidence, or public health priorities, or quality of life for people.”

An absolute must read for anyone interested in public health. Everyone, in other words. #nzpol

And here is Luxon last year salivating at wealthy money from overseas. To repeat: They are doing away with due diligence and fundamental business case practice. In an article last year, foreign investors said Kiwi assets "were cheap" and the government in charge is "friendly". #nzpol #kiwi
