I wrote about Musk and this bureaucratic coup as plainly as I could. There's reporting in here & the particulars are overwhelming but what's happening is so clear: He's not trying to run the federal govt like a software company He's trying to turn it into a political weapon. (gift link)

Frustrated there's not more I can do directly, but for now I can just try to document reality. Elon is bringing his Twitter destruction playbook to the US government, and it's impossible to explain just how serious and bad this is. www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

May I humbly suggest that for the comics-and-history buff in your life, my book about how newspaper cartoons were made—including never-before-printed Doonesbury and Peanuts printing artifacts—would be a great gift? glog.glennf.com/hcwm-store/h...

After nearly three decades, a Minnesota summer camp for kids with HIV/AIDS is closing and up for sale... because retroviral drugs are so effective that there aren't enough campers. Science works, y'all. www.startribune.com/closure-of-n...

Did your kid get a new tablet, gaming console, smartphone, etc., this holiday season? It’s probably a good idea to talk to them about online safety! Here’s a FREE resource to help have that convo: the Online Safety Pact. Get your own copy at delbius.com/resources!

Seeing lots of conversations happening around and about kids and online safety. Here’s a free online safety pact I created for families with children under 13: drive.google.com/file/d/1dvWX...

Newly added to my open-source Trust & Safety Toolkit: a lightweight Root Cause Analysis template for Trust & Safety incidents! Simple enough to use regularly, thorough enough to drive real change. Comes with a filled-in example so you can see how it works. Find it at delbius.com/resources#rc....

I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief. I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I’d like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support (thread)

I spent a good 3+ hours today using a combination of a paddle bit, Forstner bit, and chisel and hammer to make a fake peg leg for a chaise lounge so it would look more “shabby” and every second of that distraction was excellent, even the ones where I banged my knuckles really hard.

Jonathan Haidt today debated Candice Odgers, an actual expert in the field of tech & mental health who (unlike Haidt) has actually been studying this issue for years. She's been one of the leading critics of Haidt's claim, since the research doesn't support his args. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewxe...

Tinu deserved so much more than she was given. her memory is a blessing, and it should also be a call to action: pandemic isn’t over yet, and people are still dying. Tinu was vulnerable, *anyone* can become vulnerable. you are only ever temporarily non-disabled, treat disabled people with care.

Goal: create a lighting effect of a torch being used to ignite street lamps. V0 POC done!

Has anyone figured out a way to handle all their old music CDs that they’re relatively pleased with (other than storing them in a box in perpetuity)? I’m pretty sure I’ve got some otherwise unavailable gems in my collection and I’d hate to lose them forever.

Calling all science/tech folks: Do you have thoughts about xkcd? Parker Bach & I are trying to understand the role that xkcd plays in the scientific/technical community. Will you share your thoughts? forms.office.com/pages/respon... And since we are doing a snowball sample, please pass the word!

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #49,229! That’s all I have to say about that.

🦛 head.

My kids are at the age where Pokémon Go is super-fun for them, which means I’ve dusted off my old account. Anyone else out there still playing?

Fantastic opening talk by @charlottewillner.bsky.social at TrustCon, setting the perfect tone for the rest of the conference – a blend of practicality and (grounded) optimism.
