Very pleased to announce the publication of this volume on religious communities in Rome during the Great Western Schism, with a chapter by yours truly on the urban clergy: publications.efrome.it/book/show/ea... École française de Rome

Great excitement in 1617: whale beached near Scheveningen, and all the best people are out to have a look. Immortalized in paint by Esaias van de Velde, who was born OTD in 1587.

The Museo Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia Is hosting an exhibition of illegally excavated works, mainly #pottery, recovered by the Italian police. Here is a piece with scenes of Amazons battling male warriors.

At the Museo Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia (top places!), you'll find a rhyton for every taste in every shape. #Museitaliani #AncientBlueSky #Pottery #Puglia

✨Caught like a fly in amber Perhaps one of the most enigmatic gables in the country: St. John's Court in Malmesbury is a C17th almshouse which incorporates a beautiful C12th doorway from a former chapel on the site. #ThrowbackThursday

Two #mosaic griffins from 11th/12th century #Puglia: the pavement of a west tower or porch of the earlier cathedral at Bitonto, and a surviving fragment of a frieze from the church of the monastery of San Benedetto at Conversano. #Romanesque #romanico #MedievalArt

Thin line between a griffin and a rooster. #Romanesque capital in the Bitonto Cathedral crypt. #romanico

Archer on an Attic red-figure krater found in Brindisi, now in the Museo Archeologico there. (Also another episode in the photographer vs. the reflective glass case) #Pottery #Archaeology #AncientBlueSky

Two fragments of ancient bronze statues recovered from shipwrecks, now in the Museo Archeologico, Brindisi. Displays are well-designed and informative. Objects are very varied. #Archaeology #sculpture #AncientBlueSky

Signatures of artists, Melo da Stigliano and Minerro da Canosa, on 13th century capitals and imposts in the castle at Bari #sculpture #MedievalArt

Trying to find something Tajani (I think) said, after the new citizenship law for Italians abroad was passed in March, about the threat posed by the Italian diaspora of 80 million & the need to avoid all of them being able to claim citizenship. I can't find this anywhere now! Can anybody help me?

At Polignano a Mare #Puglia, a crowd of visitors brings to life the "Volare" monument to popular singer Domenico Modugno.

Helmet and armor of the late 4th century BC from a tomb excavated in Conversano, now in the archaeological museum in Gioia del Colle, #Puglia. #museitaliani #AncientBlueSky #Archaeology

Summer brings crowds to small fashionable coastal towns in #Puglia, and sends me to attractive, uncrowded inland towns. Here are street views in Conversano, Gioia del Colle, and Bitetto.

Art History and the medieval stuff were ok, but maybe it's time to make a change.

Not exactly Stonehenge, but the lion at Bitetto Cathedral gets the "spotlight" he deserves on a late (and hot) afternoon in early June. #Puglia

Welcome to June. In this month, in 1749, settlers heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia with Cornwallis incl. Herbert Jefferie, printer, & Thomas Blackwell, bookbinder. Whether they carried type & related equipment is unclear. … #books #typography #BookHistory #CdnHist 📚 📜 [1/2]

For your personal gallery of #popes, here's a real collectible: Boniface IV holding a model of the Pantheon which he consecrated as a Christian church. From the vault paintings of San Benedetto, Conversano, #Puglia

Cherry season in #Puglia. These trees just outside Conversano at Santa Maria dell'Isola.

Examples of the ancient Daunian and Messapian #pottery on display at the Museo Archeologico (Santa Scolastica), Bari. #AncientBlueSky #Puglia

A very casual Holy Trinity keeps an eye on the confraternity members coming and going.

Some churches loosen up the summer dress code.

Two details of decoration and initials from the Exultet Rolls in the Museo Diocesano, Bari. Fabulous display. #MedievalSky #Manuscripts

Selection of capitals (and a representation of a capital on a relief panel) from the Bari Cathedral crypt, the crossing area of the church, and the Museo Diocesano. #MedievalSky #Romanico #Romanesque

It can be hard to escape the USA...

Kieran should be 43 today. The photo here is of his last birthday. Here are some words I’ve shared before to anyone who had experienced suicidal ideation. The love I have for Kieran I lend to you. Those of us who love the dead can love you, too.

The comparison fails. Trump's ramblings, lies and denials appear tactical, delighting followers, confounding opponents, and giving the finger to hated experts. Biden's aging was amplified by perceived helplessness facing figures from Manchin to Netanyahu. www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

1/ Who can argue (even with civility) against civility and collegiality? But, within unequal structures of power, these "virtues" easily become masks for subservience and obedience, because some parties can only be heard by raising their voices or a ruckus. www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...

1/On the 45th anniversary of DDay (June 6, 1989), a plaque was unveiled in Sherborne (Dorset), England in memory of 29 members of the US Army 294th Engineer Combat Battalion. They died there on March 20, 1944 in an antitank mine explosion while preparing for the invasion of Normandy. #MemorialDay

just came across this #Armenian Gladzor illumination, another by T'oros Taroneci-- the way! that the mountains! drape over the shoulder of the scholar, and make his furniture

@kenmartin.bsky.social , DNC chair, I'm not impressed, nor I'm a confident this will accomplish anything. YOU are not meeting the moment. Try opening up field offices all over the US YEAR ROUND, that are usually only open two months b4 elections, and actually creating community engagement?!

See you just can't get this kind of content on land. 🪶

A hopeful start to the season for the plum trees (fingers crossed that we're past the threat of frost)

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if many, many more of our historic ruins were displayed like this? The glories of mediaeval abbeys, castles and even much humbler structures could be seen again…

In honor of my return to Crete this Friday, another Cretan site for #AncientSiteSunday; the heavy-handedly restored Minoan palace at Knossos. Though habitation continued through the Roman period, the palace was destroyed circa 1350 BCE and not rebuilt (in antiquity). #Archaeology 🏺 #AncientBlueSky
