A young child of maybe 5 was walking with his mom on the trail ahead of me. As I passed them, his mom and I exchanged pleasantries and I smiled warmly at the boy. “Is she a teacher?” he loudly asked his mom. “Because she has the happy smile face my teacher gives me when I do something nice.” 🥹

Get a mug (or more) of coffee/tea and settle in for this richly detailed, fascinating piece. This is the second in @timbousquet.bsky.social’s series.

There's always a purge after a coup. That's how it works. It's in the dictator playbook. Next comes the arrest and imprisonment of dissidents.

Dal prof, Dr. Karen Foster: "One gets the sense that it is not “the public” that these institutions are meant to be accountable to, but the government. And this is where the door is being opened to a disturbing level of government influence over university teaching and research."

It cannot be hard to locate the driver of this car. Someone must know (from police release on facebook)

"Houston did not campaign on these changes. None of this was in his election platform. Not one word of this was uttered from the steps of the blue bus, in the PCs’ Facebook or TV ads, at rallies or press conferences. It’s the biggest electoral bait-and-switch con in Nova Scotia’s electoral history."

Canadian Forces recruitment data shows enlistment up by more than 1,000 compared to the same period last year. "While officials have not directly linked the increase to tensions with the U.S., online searches for “how to join the military” have spiked since Trump took office."

Tim ends his thread with the following: "Long story short: we're seeing democracy itself dismantled in the province that brought responsible government to Canada."

These first 4 agencies have been DOGE targets, but most of the US federal government can expect the same restrictions. "The restrictions immediately apply to GSA, the Office of Personnel Management, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and the United States Agency for International Development."

Adair says she will appear before the Law Amendments Committee to speak to the bill. I'll have a full article about this later today. There is a flurry of activity at Province House this morning.

My significant other was looking for wood stove glass cleaner on the Canadian Tire site before work this morning. I heard a burst of laughter and the words “You need to see the headline on this review.” I now want to know more about PJB’s story. 😂

It "poses risks to the integrity of our democratic system of government,” but it's not clear if it can be challenged in the courts. Just cause is required before an auditor general can be fired in the provinces of B.C., Sask., Manitoba, Ont., N.B., PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says it has purchased an "initial supply" of 500,000 doses of GSK’s human vaccine against avian influenza. The vaccines will be targeted at "people who may be at increased risk of being exposed to the virus through animals infected with avian influenza."

I was never sure what going to hell in a handbasket would feel like, but this daily bumpy and wild descent into the flames of ongoing and unpredictable chaos likely comes close.

This does not bode well

"Does that mean anyone who says they will create jobs in Nova Scotia is welcome to come and help themselves to the province’s resources, even if they are involved in a “political process” led by Nazis, or white nationalists, or anti-Semites, or other hate groups?" @joanbaxter.bsky.social's latest
