Anyone know how Irelands various sales of passports are impacted by this ?

Wealthy who bought EU citizenship from Malta, Cyprus or Bulgaria may lose it - says me in @FT enterprise-sharing.ft.com/redeem/5bdef...

Climate change causes outage in Spanish and Portuguese grids which could take up to a week to fully fix... This is one month after the EU suggested citizens have 3-4 days of food on hand in case of emergency.

Good piece by @unamullally.bsky.social that also links to @tupped.bsky.social Gist piece. Gender Brexiteers indeed.

This thread sums up my own thoughts.

The UK's political and media class has spent years heaping sadism on trans people, and they want to do the same in Ireland next. Calls for civility and calm won't cut it. We need to fight them tooth and nail. www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...

TIL Pope Francis was looked after by a Cavan nun as a baby, taught English in Dublin by Fr Ted aka Dermot Morgan* and is taken care of in death by a Dublin Cardinal. *he learned English in a school Dermot Morgan was teaching at. Haven’t confirmed he actually taught him.

"A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything" Irene Dunne in 1945 having the measure of Kier Starmer in 2025

This is part of the problem with Irish media. A frequent inability to look beyond the UK and report on decision that have implications for Ireland in 2025 as opposed to decisions that might have been relevant to Ireland in 1900....

Ah sure it was nice while it lasted

🧵NOT BY ME, this is a post from someone who wants to remain anonymous but works extensively with trans people pre-transition. They were asked by someone “why do you think that’s so much [coverage of trans people] in the news at the moment?” This was their response:

Aside from filleting the UK Supreme Court with an intellectual scalpel Simon also points to Sinn Feins post colonial mindset, which echos those of FF & FG for most of the 20th Century in the reductive binary of manly men & womenly women. There is also an echo of how the Magdalene laundry enquiry 1/2

Simon has written (another) excellent Gist. Read it, For me this is the most important sentence and the nub of so many issues in the world. Who gets to author your life "all other things being equal, a person should be empowered to be the primary author of their own life"

Media recommendations 3) Sinners. Took the 'kids' (technically all adults). Everyone loved it. Visual and audio treat. Want to dig out the soundtrack. Interesting things to say about race and religion under the surface here too.

Media recommendations. 2) Machine by @matociquala.bsky.social loved it. Follow up to Ancestral Night and do read that first. Both epic magnificent books. Good news is part three out in June. Also tons of Elizabeth Bear books I haven't read yet so will be getting @ravenbooks.bsky.social to order!

Three media recommendations. 1) Picked this up in a bookshop and its magnificent. If they ever come up with a time machine I'm heading back to Paris 2024 to see the exhibit.

We saw that stupid Supreme Court decision on biological sex while my partner, a cis woman who had just given birth, was recovering in hospital. I don’t know where I’m going with this, but we were both horrified. British media transphobes always claim to speak for all women, and they just don’t.
