Are you an #ECR interested in #placebo, #nocebo, #suggestion, etc. - consider attending what looks to be an excellent summer school just prior to SIPS: sips2025.eu/preconferenc...

Functional Neurological Disorder is more common than you might think! #FND

Sorry - this is actually for nocebo responding. Consequences of posting when you're half-asleep :) Another related paper on this is coming out soon, details to follow.

A big thank you to all those who have been so positive about my new book. It's about how neurological patients can tell us so much about our selves, how personal and social identities are forged by different cognitive functions, and what it means to belong.

This looks great! Excellent work by @davidghaydock.bsky.social et al.

A fascinating thread for folks interested in brain function, autonomic nervous system, functional disorders, and syncope. Check it out!

New meta-analysis led by @madelinestein.bsky.social sheds new light on variability in placebo responding. Trait responsiveness to verbal suggestions was found to weakly predict placebo effects.

Excited to share our new paper led by Renata Sadibolova in Cognition (t.ly/EfeDD). In two experiments, we show that by applying bifactor modelling to time perception data, we identify two latent factors that conceptually align with Bayesian models of time perception. @timingresforum.bsky.social

This weekend @waterstones.bsky.social are offering 25% off on preorders for Presence in paperback! Out next month, all very exciting. Ok I'll stop selling things now. www.waterstones.com/book/presenc...

PLOS has issued a statement on recent US Executive Orders and scientific integrity. We are determined to stand firmly behind our mission, our values and our principles, and against any attempt at censorship or undermining of the core principles of scientific inquiry. plos.io/3D4O8cH

2.5 years after ‘the great debate’ at ASSC Amsterdam, we revisit it: Lamme, @standehaene.bsky.social , @smfleming.bsky.social , Boly and @anilseth.bsky.social present their theories, and Melloni and myself try to extract some insights and criticisms. >>> www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

An important and understudied area of research on COVID-19. Should be a great impetus for further research on this important topic.

Great opportunity for PhD studentships at Birkbeck, targeting individuals from under-represented groups: www.bbk.ac.uk/student-serv...

Proud of @akujawa.bsky.social for writing this very clear op-ed on the value of NIH research and the research infrastructure support provided by indirect costs. It'd be great to have researchers in other red/purple areas writing similar pieces. 🧪

Call for nominations! I know many great people who would do a wonderful job in this position. I also probably don't know many great people who would do a wonderful job as well-- help spread the word! Happy to answer questions about EiC at AMPPS with @psychscience.bsky.social . tinyurl.com/ykpzvp7e

Would you like to work at Max Planck Society tenured? A new round of the Lise Meitner Excellence Program for #tenuretrack group leaders opened today - pls consider applying! The program aims to recruit and promote exceptionally qualified female scientists. mpg.de/lise-meitner-e… #LiseMeitnerGroups

Sharing an updated talk: The New Diagnostic & Treatment Paradigm in Functional Neurological Disorder. Part of a series of lectures on #FND at the 45th Annual Braintree Neurorehabilitation Conference. @fndsociety.bsky.social @fndportal.bsky.social @tomplender.bsky.social youtu.be/Blv3o5iFxJ0?...

I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

This is scary

Must read for neurotech folks!

Karl Friston is giving a talk on predictive coding and neuropsychiatry next week (28 Jan @ 6:30 GMT), delving a bit more into philosophical implications. Should be interesting. The talk is online and free to attend but you have to register. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/predictive...

I'm speaking about Instrumental #psychedelics research at @ucl.ac.uk on 28 Jan at 6:30PM. I'll be discussing some of our perception research using N2O. Ever the contrarian, I'll also be talking about the challenge of suggestion & placebo effects in this field. www.uclsap.com/events/sugge...

Two separate great #PhD #studentship opportunities available in the Dept of Psychology @kingsioppn.bsky.social with Ellie Dommett and Oliver Runswick. Please distribute www.kcl.ac.uk/study-legacy... www.kcl.ac.uk/study-legacy...

My article "A comprehensive assessment of current methods for measuring metacognition" is finally out in Nature Communications 🎉 If you work on metacognition and think you know the psychometric properties of your favorite measure, you may be surprised. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Congrats to @behrenstimb.bsky.social on becoming the new eLife Editor-in-Chief!

Lovely/comprehensive review of metacognition and functional neurological disorder; a condition that demands a metacognitive interpretation: doi.org/10.1093/brai... The emerging picture aligns with findings in psychopathology more broadly—metacognitive performance is often equivalent to controls.

Really cool, interdisciplinary perspective on the future of haptic technology from @plasticity-lab.bsky.social

Great opportunity for an #RA post in one of the most innovative neuroscience labs in the UK.

New from us: People with delusions sometimes feel that the world is unreal. Here, we explain this in terms of prediction errors, with Kamin blocking behavioral and computational data from patients, psychics, and controls www.biologicalpsychiatrycnni.org/article/S245...

Interested in #suggestion #belief, #nocebo, #hypnosis, #hallucinations and/or #expectation ? Consider attending this symposium at @kingsioppn.bsky.social on 11 December, 3-6pm. Sadly, it won't be hybrid but we're going to try to record it. Full details here: www.kcl.ac.uk/events/belie...

New paper out in J Psychiatric Research today! We systematically reviewed/evaluated currently available #dissociation measures 🧐 Congrats to Sorawit Wainipitapong for leading & many thanks to the team - M Millman, X Huang, L Wieder, @devinterhune.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Great talk by our amazing postdoc @celiafoster.bsky.social at the #CBUMethodsDay! She introduced motion tracking methods available in neuroscience 🧠 and showed how she is setting up a real-time 3D motion tracking using a portable stereo camera! 🎥 It's a great way of tracking the third thumb!

Interested in #placebo #suggestion #nocebo effects? Consider attending the upcoming SIPS (Society for Interdisciplinary Placebo Studies) conference in Krakow in June. It's preceded by a methods workshop, which should be great. At least 1-2 people from our lab will be there. sips2025.eu

I’ve never understood why it’s meant to be surprising that x-information {creates outrage|travels fast|does what it’s designed for} more than information, which is merely true, not designed.

Important discussion about @elife.bsky.social and Clarivate removing their IF (bad idea), which is penalising elife for innovation in scientific publishing, which is sorely needed.
