Where was I radicalized???? Watching the March girls give their Christmas breakfast to the Hummel Family. Because even Little Women was written, the power of taking care of our communities and immigrant families was a virtue, part of our history and embedded as a truly American value.

Swalwell: The stock market is crashing, and prices are rising. This guy has gone to the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, and a UFC fight. He should go to the fucking supermarket and see what people are spending to feed themselves

I don’t know a lot about the complex mechanisms of Social Security but I do know… when my father retired it took them TWO years to adjust his benefits bc they were already short staffed and backlogged from covid. So just saying…. Maybe reducing the workforce by 2/3 isn’t a genius idea.

I know this is a small thing but I am hoping someone out in this place can help- My dad is a disabled vet. He now has dementia and is in a skilled nursing facility, who can’t get him his meds regularly. We’ve tried all the contact numbers but it’s a weekend. VA & SC ombudsman closed, anyone?

So ETTD does actually die, including the American experiment and standing in the world. It was nice while it lasted.

ANYWAY, did you know there's an extension you can put on Chrome that will connect with your local library system and when you go look at a book, say on AMZ, it will tell you if that book exists in the library system and if it's available? It's literally called Library Extension.

Already at the bottom of the pay scale across the United States, already supplying all our own pencils, markers, glue sticks… Promises made, promises broken. When we’re short another 3,500 teachers do not be surprised!

Today in indoctrinating kids I wrote a grant so we could put together “ready made” birthday cake kits for kids who won’t get a birthday celebration.

Watching things get torn apart is gut wrenching. one thought - NP Rangers are the keepers of all the American things- the artifacts, the stories, the legends. When you go to Independence Hall they know every story about every object. Which thing Washington touched. we’re losing the history keepers.

Inspired by the idea of "scruffy hospitality" here, tonight we're hosting the second in a series of open houses we're calling "commiseration potlucks." The only way we're going to get through this is together. Buddy up. newrepublic.com/article/1885...

The world’s richest man’s funding cuts at the United States Department of Education are already harming North Carolina’s most vulnerable students. #nced #ncpol notesfromthechalkboard.com/2025/02/16/e...

We’ve always been this country… (direct line from the founding to not voting for “that woman.”) (Also, I guess “The Scarlet Letter” is woke.)

Fly Eagles Fly

I LOVE they are opening with the Black marching band, dancers and musicians. 100% showcasing the city. This is what makes America great. Anyway, hope the head bigot is stewing.

I’ve never been more afraid to teach. But I’ve never been more resolute. Whatever happens next year, I am where I was meant to be this year. Not letting ice in my classroom, celebrating the diversity of my kids, making it a safe space.Whatever happens I will have done the right thing, now.

Fifth Grade Update: My American Citizen kid just told me a terrifying story about ICE in Raleigh this weekend, about her neighbors going into hiding & the instructions her parents gave her if ICE comes while they are at work. Anyhoo, guess we’ll try and get to learning to read today.

Christopher Paul Curtis’ ‘The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963’ is a story of Black joy & resilience despite the heavy pain of racism. As Black history is under attack, literature like Curtis’ is more important than ever. Join me at 11a ET for the latest #VelshiBannedBookClub #Velshi

Bad stuff happening right now but also beautiful things… sun coming up in Chapel Hill rarely disappoints

Just in case you were wondering- the scare tactic is working. Almost none of my Spanish speaking students are at school today.

This is exactly how I feel. It's a moment to practice radical kindness.

We finally found the line in the sand for US Teachers… it wasn’t testing, not even having to use our bodies as shields and not being called groomers - it’s handing kids to ICE.

What she said…

Courage begets courage.

I love to teach. I loved it for 20 years. Ridden out all the crazy. Never want to be political but it’s always political. Feel like the last two days boundaries have been obliterated. You can’t expect me to be willing to take a bullet for kids but hand them over to ICE. Not built that way.

Timing on this one was impeccable (and that was completely by accident). ❤️💔

Just thinking about walking back into my bilingual classroom on Thursday and making it a safe space for learning for kids who may or may not be citizens depending on how fast they can deport people. I’m sure my growth scores will ignore the fear, the anxiety and the absences that are about to happen

Well folks, Just left the Trader Joe’s in Chapel Hill and according to the panic buying of bread and frozen pizzas, we’re going to have a blizzard here. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fifth Grade Update: Teaching 5th grade for 2 decades & every year we teach Revolution to Democracy (Articles of Confederation➡️Constitution➡️3 Branches➡️Checks and Balances) this year in the first time I am wondering if this is still holds true.

5th Grade Update (moving this here from the other place)- sometimes 5th grade is hard. Sometimes you have to do the work to make the hard things easy, even when you’re learning to read. Fresh start tomorrow morning…

It’s been over 1000 days since we’ve had snow in Chapel Hill. I’ve never seen so many people joyful about a winter storm. Bring it on, I guess. #recoveringnewenglander
