I know many people with Classics degrees and none of them named, or would name, for that matter, a child “Lycurgus.” That is so lame. I am reminded of goth chicks in Latin I who said they wanted to cast spells and took names like Puella Pulchra Diabolica, while the rest of us went with “Marcus.”

A whole lot of people who had a whole lot of opinions about Elon Musk's choreography are surprisingly quiet about an attempted pogram in Brooklyn last night. Surprisingly.

I’m looking for some examples of jazz players who otherwise play bass playing cello, instead. I know Ron Carter did it. Who else? Will anyone please supply recordings, Carter, included? Help me, @tedgioia.bsky.social , you’re my only [known] hope!

Please respect my life choices.

A music practice that I find challenging is to play fast songs as if they were ballads, dirges or other slow songs, and slow songs as if they were fast songs, like dancing numbers. Adding this as a dimension of change, along with key, mode, position on the neck, etc., leads to new findings.

A detail in Lebowski that’s lost on most people is that the fact that he doesn’t like The Eagles is indicative of what an asshole and imbecile The Dude is. The Eagles are overplayed, yes, but an amazing band. They backed Linda Ronstadt.

It’s not that Republicans are good at culture war, it’s that Democrats are very bad at it. Almost any time there is an 80/20 issue with nuance, you can find Democrats staking out ground on the 1% side. There are a lot of reasons for this, not least is activist capture. 1/

I thought it would have been so cool for my friends and me to play this song at my wedding reception and dedicate it to all my ex’s. Every guy I told this thought it was awesome. Every woman was appalled and said no. I wish I’d done it. music.apple.com/us/album/dea...

Absolutely nobody respects marriage and wants it to work than someone who has lost it to death or divorce. I don’t understand how people look at the latter and see them as capricious or mercurial, everyone I know who is divorced fought like Hell not to be.

Tried my hands on tabla today. It was very humbling to have a polite message from the ancestors to stick to guitar.

More people playing the guitar should do the training exercises classical and jazz players do. I can’t imagine a player who wouldn’t benefit from understanding chord forms and inversions, arpeggios, modes, voicings, etc.

When Donald Trump builds his Trump Tower, Gaza, I hope he names one suite “Dearborn” and the banquet room after Rashida Tlaib.

One thing about exemplary art is that even without the forces of history, it is recognisable. My son is an example. At 7, he can hear what’s great and what’s junk. Very few things caught his attention like the first time I played VU for him. music.apple.com/us/album/the...

A big part of my life has been being a friend to people who have few other friends. A lot of women who have had bad relationships with men have tied Rakhi on me, making me their brothers. It’s an honor to be seen as restorative. But it is also very lonely being the only functional one in the group.

Matt Pinfield was a guy on tv, the channel that defined mainstream cool standards, who was a big nerd, able to take joy in mainstream and obscure releases, because it was all music, and music just had to be good to be cool. At a time when I was completely invisible, a guy like me was on tv.

Up late with racing thoughts. Maybe I can find some peace in the words of The Old Man.

Once you realise that Democrats are not a political party as much as overlapping sets of administrators advocating for their fiefdoms and craving a hierarchy to work within, political failure becomes more easily stomached. We need fighters, not beggars.
