Why are so many adult men like this? Why can't they just talk to women like people? The idea that you have to be like this is entirely in your mind, you are not being asked to select every word with a forceps. "you look great today" is fine if you would also say it to a man who looked great.

This. People get confused because lots of Americans *self-identify* as rural, but do not live in and probably aren't even from small towns, or the country. And a lot of actual cities with tens of thousands of people identify as "small towns". The self-ID "rural" pop is mostly cosplaying city folk.

Yeah, this Gessen piece is really awful. It's just a way to dredge up Gessen's pre-existing critiques of higher education--many of which I broadly agree with--and paint them as "the way to fight Trump". We need people to stop just repainting their previous opinions with anti-Trump paint.
