NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:

Executive orders from President Trump have agencies across the government scrubbing websites of photos and references to transgender people, women and people of color.

Thanks to the World Register of Marine Species for including our Mystery Mollusc nudibranch among their top species of the year! :^) This means a lot, since WoRMS is such an important and authoritative resource for marine scientists. 🦑🧪

they tried to stop us but P00P is too powerful

I am livid that my student who submitted a diversity F31 and received an outstanding score, near the top of the fundable range, was told to submit again. Refusing to fund F31s from URMs while funding regular F31s from white/privileged students with worse scores is blatant discrimination.

This isn’t just anti-DEI, removing people they think were celebrated only because of their color or gender. It is saying that no matter how truly important one’s achievements, if you aren’t a white male you don’t matter. www.axios.com/local/salt-l...

Holy shit. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say they’re trying to kill us all. “The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate its scientific research arm, firing as many as 1,155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists”

This isn't anti-DEI - it's retelling history as a story with only white men in it. The tale of the Navajo Code Talkers is essential to understanding the Allies' victory in WWII. Removing it because the people involved were non-white is segregationism.

We know dopamine guides reinforcement learning in externally rewarded behaviors—think a mouse learning to press a lever for food or juice. But what about skills like speech or athletics, where there’s no explicit external reward, just an internal goal to match? 🧵 (1/7)

Excited to share our latest work! It’s been a great experience working on this (including building a whole new lab!) 😊 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🚨This week, many Columbia scientists lost grants that funded over half their annual income. Others will no longer be able to do research that helps treat thousands of sick patients across the US. "It hurts," they told me. My story for @nature.com 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress. The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.

Market prepping. I’m definitely printing frustration crustacean & some plucky shrimp stickers. Idk which monsters to print. Creatures from the black lagoon?? I don’t think enough people know who man-thing is. Teen bedroom mothman?! Ahh!!! Idk!!

BREAKING: Immigration officials arrest a second person who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University.

With federal funding cuts, the University of Hawaiʻi (UH) may lose 2,500 of its 16,000 jobs across 10 campuses. UH operates on a $1.3 billion annual budget, with $636 million from the state, $410 million from tuition, and $370 million from federal funding. Aloha!

Plot twist: this is the best explanation I’ve seen on the difference between marine and maritime 😤

NEW letter to Columbia from Trump admin lists demands for “continued financial relationship” with the US government”: —Suspend or expel students for Hamilton Hall protest —“Time, place, and manner rules” —Mask ban —Address “anti-Zionist” discrimination —Reform admissions —MORE

The administration's demands for Columbia to get back in good standing and get its withdrawn grant $$ back. This is of course not everything, just the first set of hoops. Katherine Franke, 20+-yr Columbia law prof recently forced out, explains what it means, www.instagram.com/reel/DHKRV8p...

If Viktor Orbán did this, we’d denounce it in the strongest terms. This is not normal for the US.

I just realized -- these are demands to *open* negotiations for Columbia to have *any* financial relationship with the federal gov't, i.e. to not have *all* federal grant money terminated.

Ok. So. The US imports more peanut butter than we export- by ~20,000 metric tons. 20K tons isn't much compared to other goods. But it's also a lot, considering the US grows 2.75M tons of peanuts/yr. Why? Well, the US exports peanuts to other countries. They make the butter & sell it back to us.

This is another monstrous cut to biomedical research in the US and one that will gave generational impact if not promptly reversed

76 notices of grant opportunities have been unpublished by the NIH. It’s likely all the grants funded under each of these mechanisms will be terminated. Look at what will be lost, eg: Addressing the Impact of Structural Racism and Discrimination on Minority Health and Health Disparities

This should terrify every person in this country. The use of machine learning systems to approximate an individuals views on war and then, if they are here lawfully on a visa, tag them for deportation is about as sci-fi dystopian as it gets. www.axios.com/2025/03/06/s...

@noaa.gov is due to cut another 1000+ employees as part of a "reduction in force" (RIF). NOAA was already underfunded and understaffed for what they do, and it's going to get so much worse for *everyone* Posted by RADM Gallaudet over on LinkedIn: subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene...

tl;dr (but actually go read it anyway); Born 1957-1967? You might have gotten a weak shot. Born 1967-1989? You might have gotten one shot, not enough. In either case, the options are 1) look up your vaccination records, 2) get a measles titer measurement; or... 3) just get a booster! (I did that.)

I confirm, one of my own MD-PhD graduate student, who received a perfect 1.0 impact score, just got her F30 award canceled. Enraging.

New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024. That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved. Show me a better investment than that. www.forbes.com/sites/michae...
