"bsky is dead!" okay great this is my diary and none of you are supposed to be reading it anyway

It’s ironic people who love theater, because it’s a human-to-human art form, chooses to resolve conflict not through face-to-face conversations. But through third-party channels and back stabbing.

OK, hear me out. Pedro Pascal. Viola Davis. Much Ado About Nothing. Broadway. License to print money.

I talked to Kimberly Belflower and Sadie Sink about John Proctor is the Villain and how the crux of the play isn't Crucible or sexual assault. "Look at how many ways [these women] learning to take care of each other when the power structures won't take care of them."

I talked to Michael Arden about how Broadway can better support original musicals, how he was worried about MAYBE HAPPY ENDING’s future, and why PARADE is still performing at the Kennedy Center. Lots of good stuff here playbill.com/article/peop...

"Asian Americans have been a part of this country for centuries...we are still fighting to be considered American—it's one of the real reasons that this play and this story deserves to be told." Daniel Dae Kim and Frances Jue on their Tony nominations for YELLOW FACE, streaming on PBS on Friday

Someone brought their 3 year old to STRANGER THINGS on Broadway. Someone else brought a 6 year old. It’s good to expose your kids to art and Mind Flayers at a young age but I think that’s pushing it.

Not Jennifer Simard’s delivery of “she’s why I spent 4 years locked in that health [split second awkward pause] spa” making me laugh out loud on the subway while listening to the DEATH BECOMES HER cast album. Her voice is so full of personality it’s like I’m watching the show all over again

Got to talk to LaTanya Richardson Jackson, who is the rare person I’ve interviewed who wanted to know something about me. A class act. We talked about how she was recovering from surgery when she got offered PURPOSE and how she helped craft her second act monologue.

Yesterday I had to triple check that I wrote it right about Trump wanting to cut the NEA but increase defense spending to ONE TRILLION, a number so big I can’t even comprehend it

My second NEA piece in two days. Its distressing but at the same time, I feel like this attempt to control the arts is a testament to its power. And why it’s more important than ever for audiences to step up and support it playbill.com/article/nati...

Glad to see PURPOSE and OH, MARY! getting Pulitzer flowers. But I'm especially glad for THE ALLY. It was a rare play that captured the exact pulse of where we are at the moment. It's also probably why it didn't get much love last year; it touched on some really raw nerves. I hope it gets done again

Today I used the phrase “reheating your own nachos” to describe directors who pull from the same bag of tricks project to project. I used it correctly but it also felt wrong. At a certain age, trying to understand current lingo is overrated

Many milestones today for Asians at the Tonys: Daniel Dae Kim is the first Asian actor to be nominated for Lead Actor in a Play, Marjan Neshat and Tala Ashe are the 1st Middle Eastern actors in their category, Darren Criss got 2 nominations. What a wonderful way to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month

Yes it’s important to see ourselves in all kinds of stories. But “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” has never hit as hard for me as it did when Lea Salonga sang it tonight at OLD FRIENDS. If she ever does GYPSY in full, so many Asian kids with complicated relationships with their moms will be healed

When journalist, playwright Lillian Hellman was called to testify before the McCarthy Committee- this was her response (despite fear of prison )

A nice Friday find via Discover. On what's good/bad in musicals- agree that there's a lot of mixed content, & the formula for "good" isn't always obvious. It doesn't help that some fan types are also more reluctant than those in other artistic areas to admit when a musical is poor.

OR JUST NOT FUCKING USE IT EVER

David Greenspan needs to go on an I’M ASSUMING YOU KNOW DAVID GREENSPAN tour. People need to be educated on David Greenspan, how hard it is to make a living in theater, and how life changing it can be. Also legendary behavior to have another playwright be inspired to write you a play

Thought I was taking a break from the theater tonight by seeing a vampire movie (SINNERS) only for it to turn halfway into a musical about the history of the blues. And the villain is an Irish step-dancing vampire. Ryan Coogler made something that’s unhinged and unpredictable and also brilliant

“We're human, and actually, you're gonna identify with my story as much as I would identify with yours.” Had a great time on a rainy Saturday hanging out with Whitney White, as she discussed overseeing four shows this season while balancing a family. Her stamina? Unmatched.

In December, dad got diagnosed with leukemia and it got so bad, we were planning his funeral. Today he’s walking and eating normally, and gettin stronger. The lesson: while there’s still opportunity and time, there’s no need to give up. That applies to dad but also, to present circumstances

You know the *only* reason he got out so fast was a reporter live posted about this for hours. And, a large amount of public pressure. Every time someone gets grabbed, there has to be a robust public response immediately.

“Bring Him Home” from Les Miz is hitting pretty hard tonight

"If you can purchase US citizenship for $5 million, the “illegals” are only guilty of being poor." -Feminist News

Please repeat over and over: “Bending to the whims of a bully will not end his cruelty. It will only embolden him. The response to authoritarianism isn’t acquiescence. Bullies respond to one thing, and one thing only: a punch in the face.” —Gov. JB Pritzker

I’m so proud she is my rep.

What I love about JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN is how, while it addresses Me Too, it focuses not on trauma but on healing. And how the patriarchy can’t provide healing, it’s community, friends, love. That resonated more to me than the CRUCIBLE stuff

The Tony’s didn’t rule if they’re considering Sanaz Toossi’s English a new play or revival, which makes me think it’s in Best Play contention. So potentially we’ll have Sanaz, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Cole Escola competing. I cannot choose a favorite. Which tells you what a good season it’s been

Lauren Yee is the only person whose play about modern Russia I’ll go see. Because she’ll do it in the most creative (surprisingly funny) way, instead of just depressing the hell out of us

Another flurry of Broadway openings, a valuable reminder: reviews are subjective. Look for the critics whose taste matches yours to clarify your feelings. Don’t let the consensus dictate how you should feel about a show. If you love something everyone hated, that’s OK! I love Diana the musical

When I heard about the tariffs was, I thought “fish sauce is about to get expensive.” It’s not just Asians, these grocery stores are a lifeline for many low-income people, with prices lower than chain stores because they’re locally owned. This is hurting small businesses and their communities

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

I don't usually feel envy but damn, that monster has some green eyes right now

Having seen THE LAST FIVE YEARS on Broadway, I maintain this: “Summer in Ohio” and “Climbing Uphill” is placed wrong. They should be switched. Cathy is way too light hearted in the former and too tense in the latter for where she is in the timeline. Jamie continues to suck but in the right order

I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.

I sure needed all this good news tonight. We can do it! Defeat is not inevitable!

In one scene tonight in GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, Clark Gregg said, “I feel like I fell asleep three years ago and I woke up and all the sane people moved to Europe.” That line got applause. The play feels like a very necessary call to action, and isn’t that what art should be now?

Between Maybe Happy Ending and Severance, I'm enjoying these sci-fi stories about how, despite memory-erasing technology, we still all need human connection. And while connecting can be painful and awkward, isolation is not the answer. We need each other to grow and thrive. Good message for now

Sunday thought: As a millennial who is a naturalized citizen, who grew up on food stamps and Medicaid, I always assume that everything is temporary and stability is an illusion. Doesn’t mean you sit back and let things happen to you. Things can get better but it takes a lot of work though and luck.
